"Threnody for the victims of Radiohead!" Im not sure I can convey the inappropriateness of the comment in regards to the piece whose title you are parodying, or in regards to the proper perspective which bands such as Radiohead and the musicians within those bands should be seen. I know the comment was a joke, but it is an uneducated one at best.
you can really hear his love for messiaen and penderecki in this piece. his soundtrack for the film norwegian wood is sublime. when i first heard the soundtrack i was very moved and impressed by both the guitar and string pieces but assumed they were done by different composers. nope. greenwood did it all (albeit with help on the string pieces from a conductor). great stuff. i'll be following his film scores from now on.
Nothing he writes is ever dull, but I've found some of his work with the ondes Martenot to be truly frightening. The distortion--on an already distorting instrument---in RH's "Amazing Sounds of Orgy", for instance, absolutely raised the hackles on the back of my neck. I've never had such a visceral reaction to an instrument in my life. Great song. TERRIFYING noise. It's like the memory of a satanic rape. Or being whipped by ghosts. Even remembering it chills. I think I'll go vomit now....
Glad u liked it, but it took me days to relate. And I'm not sure I want to have to WORK at liking a song. Doesn't it fill you with dread? Don't you smell the vacuum tubes heating up? That's the first thing that came to mind....heating vacuum tubes on pegboard. Undoubtedly a childhood memory I should explore, perhaps, but it left me weak at the knees. I slept with the lights on for days.
@marginallymental It was pretty much love at first listen... it was creepy, but the groove was something i got into right away. It took me to scary places, yeah, but ultimately i found it to be an interesting look into a messed up, obsessively controlled relationship. It does make me dread, but it's a beautiful dread.

thanks for the music!
for your information, there's no dissonant chords in penderecki's threnody... they're clusters and that's the idea of that piece's texture.
