@kemptonjones frankly this is awful automotive engineering, there was obviously a major deficit in the tensile strength of the unibody and airbags are not designed to protect occupants with a failing safety cage as each device works together as a system because without a properly worn seatbelt an airbag will do more harm than good. And if the entire cage is ripping ripped apart and collapsing you'd probably have a better change being shot outward rather than trapped in a can of metal.
