You should try the same project, using tempura water-colors paint and use some method to randomize (dynamically vary) the slope of your "canvas" (paper) ... maybe even use some sort of mobile (breeze-driven) to randomly cast a cooling shadow on some of the ice-cubes, randomly and dynamically.
... Let nature controll the direction of drainage and which cubes get the most solar exposure, at any given moment. Or, you could just dip some Gerbils in finger-paint and let them run around.
