@pundadah A Cow was an important animal in Ancient India. This was because they were found throughout India and they provided with the best quality of Milk. ( I'm sure you are aware that Cow Milk is more filling than Goat Milk ). Milk forms a Vital ingredient of any Indian Sweet Dish or Food Dish.

Either way, Hinduism like Buddhism and Native American Beliefs teaches people to respect all animals and never harm them, Only Fish / Plants were considered Food.

Cows must get killed a lot in India from traffic (from the videos I've seen). I guess the deal with cows in India is to let them be as they are and do what they want, so most go wandering around, being left alone. Then again, some people do try to dress up cows in India and feed them. You make a good point on having them in a stable. It's much easier to protect them and give them a higher quality environment.
