My ancestors left Orkney 160 years ago. The largest Viking treasure ever found in Scotland was found on our ancestral farm there. The farm is also very close to the sites of Skara Brae and Maes Howe, which are both 5,000 years old. Maybe me ancestors were druids!
I have just been to Orkney about a month ago for the first time, and even though, i went there for an extremely sad ocasion... i enjoyed the views, the culture and its people.
My friend Jean Geddes lives in Orphir with some drop dead gorgeous views of the Hoy sound and Stromness. I come up from County Durham to stay ever other year to visit Jean and to compete in the dog obedience show thats held at the Picky centre in Kirkwall. Orkney is a lovely place, full of wonderful sights and stories. Can't wait for the next time.
Watching that made me ache to return, I spent a week there in 1994 exploring archaological sites with a university class from Colorado...but my fondest memories came from staying in Stromness during Shopping Week! Wonderful video, beautiful place.
Fantastic and thanks for posting. I plan to go there with my girl in the next 4 months for a long weekend to explore the islands and those amazing stone circles, it looks one heck of a tranquil place to stay.
Only the Old Man of Hoy seastack is not on the Mainland of Orkney. If you want something memorable, visit Westray. A hike or bicycle ride to Noup Head to view the lighthouse and see the birds nesting among the sheer cliffs is quite spectacular. Or take a nice ride on one of the inter-island airplane flights.
beautiful video
