This has a dazzling of incredible implications. For one, nature is no longer the only creator of new species, since writing and booting up genomes means creating new "species" just like writing and booting up computer programs means creating new "applications". God has so died

eh, he's at Stanford now, which as articles stated at the time is a big coup for them. I wouldn't speculate too much about his position at MIT - synthetic biology does not need a Perez Hilton.

clear and concise, true. what's not so is exactly what type of organisms will be engineered and brought to life using this technology. this will represeent a totally new revolution much like electronics in the past couple generations
