oohhh..so we're allowed to sing differently... like first she sings high high and then she sings a part different like not so high... I thought that would be unprofessional (I'm a novice) and so I try not to...but it's okay???
@cityofage Well im not really sure what you are talking about, but if theres a singer tht you should follow the example of, I sarah brightman. so yeah its okay.
@cityofage - Professionals do indeed get leeway when it comes to interpretations of classics, especially with musicals and broadway standards. Also, when it comes to operas and art songs, there is often an allowance for personal interpretation as well. The goal is to be like picasso: FIRST master the original form, and then change it to make it your own.
Sarah sings this song many different ways. If you don't care for one -don't listen. I have heard 4 different versions -all great. Sarah has the tremendous talent to bring something special to each version. She has been showing this versatility for 30 years. Many of the others singers who were also excellent -- were one or two hit wonders. Who can match Sarah? 26+ million CDs, concerts, etc?
Oh wow. This made me cry so hard. This is the lullaby on the music box I used to crank for my first baby, Bradley. I can remember looking at his beautiful face in the glow of his nightlight while listening to his music box of this song. Thank you so much for posting this!
All of you with negetive comments you all should sing this then post it so the rest of us can compair, honestly it is a hard song to sing, Sarah did sing very well in her own style. I love Elaine Page too. :)
I studied opera/classical voice for 22 years while also singing in power metal bands and I heard nothing wrong here.Sure it is different but sometimes different is good.
i always find myself disappointed at sarahs lack of belt capacity shes an amazing opera singer but this song is not an opera song its an emotional belt nothing personal bu some songs dont suit certain people phantom however was amazing
Her technique (?) is good, but Memory has more feeling and depth in the lower key. Sarah sounds a squeaky here. Elaine Paige sings it better IMHO in the 1999 Birthday Concert.
God damn, I am sincerely fucking disappointed. She usually sings so divinely, yet with this song she's so hasty and dull... Awkward as fuck. Yeah, for once I'll have to pass on Sarah's version. Although she did a boss version of Macavity: The Mystery Cat.
Sarah, chill! Take your fucking time, Christ. There's more to this shit than getting the performance overwith. This is one of the most beautiful melodies out there, and you fucked it up big time.
I love Sarah, but I really don't like the way she did this song. :( She has a hard time keeping the light sound with the lower notes, which makes her feel awkward on the higher notes after hearing it. But it is a beautiful song and a beautiful singer... just not together.
awesome. but...aghh, too much vibrato from "touch me...happiness is". yikes! and the ending notes are from Angel of Music from The Phantom of the Opera. weird
I don't know what's more amazing, that you summed up entirely what I was thinking in my head in two sentences, or that exactly what I was thinking was also thought and spoken by someone named "FoxyGrandpa". Youtube and its wonders.
My school did Cats this last year as our musical. It was so tempting for me to sing along, but I wanted to hear her. Then I was glad I didn't because that end note was so light and beautiful. I could hit that note, but it would have been very loud and have tons of vibrato. I've never heard a note that high sang so lightly and beautifully, ever.
i like this a lot i love sopranos and this is by far the best soprano ive heard i doubt alot of people kno how hard it is to keep the pitch right singing so high since they say alot of bad stuff
because i think this sounds better with a lower voice because it sounds more like a old uglyish cat kinda... but this sounds more like.. one of the like.. gorgous cats :S if you get me.. because its more like.. high and girly and stuff:S

I figured that out while playing in the same key on the piano yesterday. Still, it's a good key to sing in. Saves my voice from fading away in the lower notes like the original mezzo!
She sounds lovely, but somehow Elaine Paige's mezzo is more powerful.
I'm 17, and a soprano (at least I think I am - I can reach high D) and singing Memory for a competition, but I'm struggling with the lower notes in the mezzo key. I think I can use this key . It's not even very high... goes up to F5 I think, not more.

true this wasn't really that high considering it is also a very light sound which makes it seem that much higher. I don't think she went as high as High C so this wasn't high for her or any soprano really.
