There is practically no free press in the country. The man practically started a war to win the 2000 election. The parliament consists of his party and parties which are the "opposition". He has all the courts under control. Some Russians enjoy it, there are many who are nostalgic for the Soviet Union and want a firm hand. There are many others who oppose him but have no way of getting to the mass media..

Have you actually been to Russia or know any real Russians? I spend my time divided equally between Australia and Russia so I can see exactly what's going on. An anti-putin protest consisting of about 50 people is portrayed in the Western media as huge rally.... To get the truth don't rely on American news sources.

They actually have two legitimate parties in Putin's United Russia and the communists... they have free media but they just dont allow foreign NGO's to run in their media..
