I lived in Hawaii when I was younger (7-10 y.o) and, even though I am 20 now, I will always consider myself Hawaiian. I remember sitting on a swing with my best friend on a hill. In the distance we could see Diamond Head, the ocean, and Wakiki. The sun was right above us, the sky was blue with picturesque clouds, and I remember thinking "This is home. This is where my heart will always be." Whenever I pop in Keali'i, I go back to that day.

I know what he is singing about, but this song just takes me back 1997 Waianae Intermediate School and the times spent day dreaming about getting out of Hawai'i. And now that I am gone, I truly miss it every single day. I miss my family, my friends, and the entire Leeward coast! im lucky enough to have been to hawaii three times. first two times were in the late eighties to Kawaii with my husband and daughter. now my daughter lives on the big island and i went to see her in june, this year. i loved it and i miss her. my son lives here in new england with his lovely family. im so torn. i want to go there to live. i spent two weeks on the hilo side of hawaii and i miss it so much. i loved the people and would love to live there till my end comes.

Kawaipunhele is a place name. He is singing about returning to this place. The song is rich in symbolism (the Hawaiian kaona) and tells of his happiness about returning to his lover and to this place they shared. It is a truly beautiful song. The lyrics with English translation are easy to find in Google. I posed a while back.
