I hav a Strong and Powerful voice (so ive been told). I found that i sing even stronger when i turn my head to da right or lean fwd or slightly bkwards. My speaking voice is lighter and a lil higher than my chest voice.
I AM ALREADY A SAAAAANGA! YOU CAN CHECK OUT MY VIDS AND REALLY SEE! BUT THE TIPS THAT i LEARNED FROM YOU LETS ME KNOW WHAT i REALLY AM DOING AND ENHANCES ME! =) GLAD I WAS ABLE TO LEARN SOME TIPS FROM YOU!
The way I was taught is not to sing as hard as you are in order to get a high sounding note; either you have a high voice range or you don't. Don't get me wrong there are ways to train your voice to reach areas that you have not reached before but it is still your range, high, median or low but screaming to get there will only hurt you and your students.
@ladysoulsinger not necesarrily, I've been singing on this choir for about a year and a half now, and many notes are out of our range, and they way she is singing now we are required to sing like that, anyways, I've found that through weekly practice in singing like this you end up discovering things about your vocal chords you never knew, so now i can sing alot of these notes easily where as i couldnt before, in other words go after your limit, in order to grow
I'M sorry, but your training isn't exactly correct. Your chest voice is your speaking voice. I don't mean to step on your parade just trying to help. I've been a prrofessional singer for a number of years and also learned the hard way on how not to train the voice through a difficult surgery.
Barbra Streisand always utilized her high chest voice in singing because it was natural to her and she knew how to use it. Don't force it or you can damage your vocal cords. The video instruction is very useful but singing in a high chest voice is not for everyone. High chest is the same as your speaking voice. It is actually your speaking voice. So if you have a low speaking voice, it will be hard for you to sing in your high chest voice. With a high or medium speaking voice a plus.
@ProudAmerican9100 I think people actually have a speaking range, I have a really low speaking voice but if i get excited it goes up about an octave, my chest voice went from D2-G#4 last time I checked though
Hummm...You sound like you are putting so much effort into your singing. It does not come with ease. It sounds so forced and it should not. Barbra Streisand is a perfect example of someone who utilized her chest voice whenever she sung. She has a natural high chest voice. The singers of today use so much effort into singing so hard when singing should be done with ease in an effort to not destroy the vocal cords. Barbra has managed to keep her voice strong well into her 60's.
omg it works like I stood up like ok lets see and when i bended my knees i was like '' UNDERNEATH THE CITY LIGHTS!'' u know in high voice when i sat down i was like all squeky and i was like '' damn it -_-''
I LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU *_* DON'T KNOW HOW U HELP ME *_* . to i have my own voice what i have to do ? i have to make a mix from my favorites singers ? ps: i'm a boy
hi i have a question, How can I "play" or have my vibrato sound like Beyonce? I hear she plays with it as if using it to go fast..idk how to explain lol
Ever since I came back home been for summer break, it is SO hard for me to sing in my chest voice and I can't figure out why. The environment, maybe? Allergies? None of the exercises or warm-ups I try are working.
Can you do a video on how to develope a better vibrato? (Which hopefully doesn't include making your voice sound like you're starting a car or something pleeaaasee.) <3
Dileesa, I know you advice against the voice going "backward", but I think that if you found out how to balance a "backward" movement of the voice with a simultaneous forward projection, it helps with high notes and vocal range and also to hit them without being loud if desired. Consider it. I consider it a good general idea to, only if acheivable, let the "edges" of the voice "curve" backward while projecting the tone and he top of the voice forward, in addition to spreading the voice sideways
@okebaram hey! thank u for your thoughts. i understand what u r saying but i dont agree with that as a teaching method. I would never teach someone to throw their voice back to sing and spread their voice sideways... esp not in those words. I think teaching forward singing is best, with modification of the shape of the the mouth, tongue, etc. the goal is to teach good patterns and a strong foundation to fall back on.. and that doesnt promote those goals.
@okebaram ahh! ok i guess we're on the same page then. U have to be carefu of the vernacular you (anyone) use in how u get the results in singing.. for ex: to teach someone how to breath u don't wanna say 'push ur stomach out'... even though that's the end result .... it is teaching a better habit to say.. 'expand your ribcrage and relax your lower abdomen as u pull in air' simply because 'pushing' is not an imagery you want a student to associate good singing with.
@Dileesa I accidentally clicked " vote up" on okebaram's comment.. I confess immediately that I don't know what I'm talking about, so that's a "deduct one" on the rating for that. I'm a bass and I struggle with high notes and bridging (and about forty othert hings!) so I'll check out your other stuff.
I've been a terrible singer for years thanks to the web I'm addressing it, voice and understanding now greatly improved - now I'm only a poor singer, but onwards and upwards sez I!
@mininicki24 to help understand what I was trying to say, Sing with a free not-restricting voice placement: your tongue should be free & loose, sing like your singing from above your tongue in your mouth not below, and be free to adjust your tonal/voice placement/projection at the edge of your upper teeth to be relatively "withdrawn" but balancing it still with forward and spread out (or other placement) projection above your teeth edge. Continued...
@mininicki24 contin'd from previous... However, your voice & tongue should remain free AND versatile (able to vary its placement), as opposed to being locked up. No matter what, if “projecting forward” makes your voice locked or tense, then free it up to go "backward" or to spread out and if your voice is locked by being "withdrawn" or spread out, then free it up to focus at the center of your mouth and be forward. Hope that clarifies? If you need more explanation you can PM me
Pure chest voice stops DEAD for women at around F#4, above that it is ratios of chest/head, what in classical terms we would call the middle...but since in pop a chest-like quality is kept though it's not chest voice anymore, I think the term "belting" would be perhaps more accurate.
@primohomme You are completely wrong. Some of those ridiculous theories need to edited. She sand in chest voice and she was in the fifth octave. Simple. And there is no one cut off mark for all voice types, no such thing
@primohomme I understand, but I think it's a conceptual or ideological different with choice of terminology, bcos I think that based on your conceptualization, there would be no such thing as 100% chest voice. For me, I will call this 100% chest voice bcos she hit the note in her chest voice without crossing into the passaggio or middle etc if you will. And Dileesa has (used to have) many videos where she sings or belts in mixed voice, which she is incredible skilled at. She does both
Actually...we can refer to chest voice either as a resonance (the sound resonating on the chest)
Or to a cord function, in any case...belting above F#4 is not "pure" chest voice
Why? because the sound wave moves out of the chest resonator at around that frequency due to the length of the wave, it moves towards the mouth.
And it's not quite the cord function either because at that point the cords start "zipping" not just banging harder against each other but thinning/shortening
Gosh. Your voice is amazing :)

I think what he means with "voice going backwards" is "mouth back space" or high soft palate, his terminology is wrong though.

She was belting, but she was not using PURE 100% CHEST VOICE
That's my point, that it should be refered to as BELTING not "CHEST VOICE".
And indeed those "ridiculous theories" are based on scientific research
Read a little bit about Manuel Garcia.
