Gotta love the knockers. Anyone who thinks this isn't great is a chump! I've had the pleasure of playing in a section with him too and +1 to all the compliments. Not a bad bloke either. A couple of things to remember - 1. Live performance. 2. Crapola recording. 3. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he still has a DAY JOB! Far out. Anyone who craps on this performance needs to get out more.

  • For an interesting comparision, try the young Glenn Dodson playing this as soloist with the US Marine Band, probably mid-1950s. Glenn went on to asst. principal with Chicago, then completed his career as Phila Orch principal (27 yrs) and as prof. at Curtis, (students included Joe Alessi, many others). Extraordinary musician, and man.

You can find an .mp3 on the web. I can't seem to post it here.

  • AS USUAL BRILLIANT!A BRILLIANT PLAYER>

  • Brett has all the tools, but he need to practice this piece more, get the articulation of the fast parts precisely, and quit the gratuitous showing off with the ad lib high notes.

This is a murderously difficult piece to play properly. Everyone (except Pryor) I've heard play it butchers it in some way. If you want to here it performed perfectly listen to the original recorded by himself, March 13, 1911 on Crystal Records CD451.

  • totally Brilliant!!!!!!!!.

  • Anyone Jealous that my Symphonic Ochestra is going to be accompanying Brett Baker for the World Premier of his new Trombone Concerto...I thought not!

  • Brett Baker is coming to do a concert with Brass Wanganui in New Zealand on 15th of Nov. Looking forward to being involved with such a virtuoso player

  • Wonderful player

  • he's good but he puts on a show

  • WOW. And I've met this guy...

  • Well bassbonebobo, If you think this is superb playing then do not enter the world of professional players. You will be blown away with any piece of music. Sorry for you. And please do not talk about Mr. Fontane as Carl as if you ever met him. I met him many years ago. A fine musician who could play anything on the trombone, but I'm afraid you will never understand that.

  • @janwillemtromp1

Why in the world are you bashing a fellow musician in the first place. It's people like you that discourage me to share the field of work. I appreciate everything that Fontana, Johnson, and Rosolino have done for the world of trombonists and I strive to teach to the best of my ability all that I can to younger players so that they may reach that level someday as well.

An educator and fellow trombonist would never demonstrate such behavior. Fontana would most like be ashamed.

  • @yunasboy27 Fellow musician? Brass Band? Come on, stay serious.

If you teach trombone you won't let any talent play in such a Brass Band.

I wouldn't. Be honest to your students!

  • @janwillemtromp1

Whenever you post a video of you playing anything as hard anywhere close to as good as how Mr. Brett Baker played, then you can critisize as roughly as you did. Yes, he missed a few notes because he tried to show off but his performance was virtuosic. It is okay to critisize, but not to totally sh*t all over his playing. He is one of the best trombonists in the world and the Black Dyke Mills Band one of the best if not the best brass band in the world.

  • That was a truly awesome display of technical proficiency. If you can't recognize that I feel sorry for you.

  • Not good at all. When you can't play the high's then don't try it. In the legato that terrible brass band vibrato spoils all. Listen to the truly greats such as Carl Fontana, J.J. Johnson, Frank Rosolino etc. This is weak.

    Jan (former player)

  • @janwillemtromp1 With all due respect, WTF are you talking about? That was superb. True, he will never play like JJ, Carl or Frank, but none of them could do what he just did. He missed 1 high note and you think he sucks? Wow. Just.. wow.

  • @janwillemtromp1

Why compare this Band music to the great Jazz Trombonists? We're talking about contrasting styles, techniques, ways to approach the horn and etc. Not who can play the highest. What you're doing is turning this into a whose balls are bigger contest. If you've been playing for 25 years then you should be able to truly appreciate the work and effort each player that posts something gave to their instrument. I'm not saying to give them a cookie for every wrong note but come on.

  • @yunasboy27 I can appreciate hearing a student play. But here a guy is presented who should have been able to play professionally. He tries and fails. If he would want my advise I would tell him to quit playing in a British Brass Band. He could study classical (as I did) or go for the Big Bands (as I did later). The trombone, as an instrument was and is further developed in the USA. Use a King, Conn or a Bach Stradivarius and start all over and then seriously.

  • @janwillemtromp1 There is more than 1 way to play a f*cking trombone you tosspot.... 'Everyone needs to play Jazz because it's so amazing, and we have no ego's whatsoever'

  • @janwillemtromp1 I'd love to see you do better

  • he came to my middle school and gave us tips on low brass. it was pretty awesome

  • Is this guy actually a giant North Korean child?!

  • no doubt that he is a good trombonist, but my oppinion is that a machine could have played it the same way. ist no passion and musicality in this performance

  • I want to meet this Im0an0asshole guy. He seems like he deserves a punch in the face.

  • Get to have a workshop with him on Friday! Gonna be so good!

  • Brilliant!

  • firstly what a guy!serious player..

secondly, does anyone know where you can get the brass band arrangement for this??...all i can find is the piano and trombone version!

  • Brilliant tecnique. Pity about the sound and style!

  • thats well fucked up hes my ict teacher :L

  • This guy is a very good player, but it seems like he sacrificing a bit of his musicianship by being a little too proud of his range... He is a great player, but this performance could have been more musical if he had made more of a difference between articulation in the legato passages and brought out the melodic line in the fast sections....

  • @gordonjacobtbn its more of a show piece then it is musical piece..(know what i mean?) bands like this do this kind of thing all the time where the soloist is basically just showing off

  • so smoth thank you

  • thanks molto bravo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Whoa, trombone screamer! : D

  • Its very easy to spot brett as an adjudicator because of his sound, very vibby.

  • this guys my ict teacher! End of Factoid

  • The only thing i dont like about his playing is his vibrato, abit too much.

  • exellent ! bravo one of the best trombonist i have heard...

  • I really do not like bretts sound on his Rath for me He was much smoother and round sounding during his Conn days great playing but now has that awful edge rasp to it.he never ever sounded like that during his Fairey days just listen to his cds on chandos he had a beautiful sound then

  • awesome range. i'm jealous.

  • ...and he hardly broke into a sweat!

  • haha, i can play that note, its a bit high, but it takes practice. great job, good tone.

  • Beautiful sound for sure.

  • Comment removed

  • Did he really play that high note? It sounded so fake... Maybe somebody sang it or sent the audio through a program... Was it real?

  • lol of course it's real, that's what a trombone sounds like when it's played up that high. It's not an impossible note and Brett Baker is more than capable of playing it.

  • @zoot69 I had him for a music lesson yesterday and he played this piece with such ease it was unbelieveble!

  • yes he acctuly did play that high not because i was on a brass band residential with him and he played his trombone and he did that high note and it was real x

  • Comment removed

  • I know Brett and yes he played it... he has an amazing high / low / middle register!

  • damn! ur good, i neeed a lot a practice to go

  • bellissimo però è più bello suonato dal mitico alessi

  • Has anyone got Brett Bakers Cd with the salvation army...its called faith encounter?

Btw awesome piece, have played this with a few bands when i have been asked to play with them...Cyaa =]

  • But, this piece is amazing. And impressive. Like every Pryor piece, esp. reminds me of Blue Bells.

  • indeed XD

  • Wow! I had not heard this one before.... so Pryorish

The sheet music probably looks ungodly.

    Bravo!

  • who cares what note that is, just listen at the beauiful music!

  • someone asked fool...so obviously they cared enough to ask the question.

  • please dont waste my time.

  • I wasn't even being rude, you just threw yourself at me with words, and you say you dont have issues?

  • I actually did a bit of psych while I was at university, and the fact that you think you can make judgements about my personality over youtube is laughable. I'm not at all mentally deficient, and to be honest you sound like a bit of a loser yourself.

  • its an Ab at 1:11... ahah

  • Does anyone know what note he goes up to at 1:11?

  • double F#

  • Thanks. Wow, that's pretty impressive (that he did the note...although it's also impressive if you just know what the note is by ear)

  • nah that note is piss easy to rip up to like that on trom.

  • its actually an Ab. It starts on an F# and then goes up a nine

  • he rips up to an F# you stupid fucking idiot, open your ears. Stop trying to play smart you don't know shit. Pathetic cunt. For shame. boneking my asshole. If you hear an Ab there's something wrong with you.

  • What the hell dude it is an Ab

  • What the hell dude it is not. He's ripping up an octave from the F# not down to the low Ab from a high Ab. You can hear the Dom 7th interval.

  • in brass bands the trombone is pitched in Bb treble clef. the peice starts in concert Bb minor so the it is a concert Gb that he plays then goes down to a pedal A.

  • @Im0an0asshole What top section band do you play for? Your language on this page is disgraceful - you've let yourself down big time as a supposed 'professional musician.'

  • I love the uniforms they have!

sdjks Soprano guy plays really good too.

  • Then you should adjust your ears.

    Don't troll- it's not cool.

  • I think I just wet my pants.

  • What makes brett baker great is he's different. He isn't your standard trombone; he is unique in his own way, and there's no one like him

  • my trombone teacher is as good as this guy

  • i went 2 c these people in ulverston

  • damn listen at that soprano in the background, sick :D

  • I hate him!

Wish I could play that good :(...

PS, I DONT REALLY HATE HIM, JUST JEALOUS!

  • You guys can say what ever you want, but this guy is still one of the worlds best.

  • I got his autograph on the back of my t-shirt :)

And I also got to play with them (Black Dyke) in the pause of their show in sweden last week :)

  • "petal?" idiot

  • Very entertaining! I'm playing this piece right now and it's helpful to hear someone else's interpretation. Really nice style!

  • Yay he's my teacher

  • Black Dyke is the most recognised brass band in the world, there's no denying that. and at the moment, with the lineup they have, probably the best brass band in the world. though others come close and can beat them on any given day(like last week at the British Open).

  • Re lineups - you're not entirely accurate Bender, Cory, Fodens and Grimethorpe have all have lineups equal to if not better than Black Dyke at the moment - the result last weekend was no fluke...

  • I'd say Corry is probably the best at the moment as they were the ones that beat Black Dyke! But as for Backer here, well there's no doubt that he is one of the best in the world at the moment!

  • I haven't played this in forever. He's pretty good. I think he popped up an octave on some of the note, I fear that! Or maybe it's just been too long since I dug that sheetmusic out. Thanks for the memories, eh!

I have to give the nod to the other performance I've seen of this, though, principal trombonist for US Army band, "Pershing's Own", MSGT Scott Shelsta. He's damned good.

  • pfft whatever. Do you know who this guy is? Do you even know who Dyke are? heh, Americans.

  • Yeah! this guy is one of the world's best trombonists! You'r just jelous because British brass bands are of a far higher standard than you'r American ones!!

  • Why did you just reply to me? I'm not American. I know Dyke are top shit so don't spout off to me, reply to the other dude. Wanker.

  • sorry! I pressed reply for the wrong guy! no need to call me a wanker though prick!

  • yes there is, you made a dickhead mistake and you called me an American.

  • O fuck u you unresonable twat! If you can't see that I made an honest mistake then go fuck yourself asshole!

  • I can see you made an honest mistake yes. You made an idiot out of yourself. Didn't get much better by that rant you just went on.

  • Meanwhile i sit here as a civilized American and dont argue.

  • If you were really civilised you wouldn't bother putting your two cents into something that doesn't concern you. Ya know, if it's that trivial...

  • Yeah, because you two non-Americans calling each other twats and wankers a page back was pretty much the epitome of class!

I wonder why my comment asking if you just wanted to bash Americans got rated -6. Is there that much US/British animosity about music? Hell, I expressed my opinion that I thought he was good but someone else I had heard play the same piece I preferred.

Speaking of something that doesn't concern you, my original comment was an opinion and yours was a worthless attack.

  • You came back and wrote a novel when I didn't say anything to you in 6 months and wasn't even talking to you? Ok...

  • Yeah, I was going through my favorited videos and wanted to hear Fantastic Polka. Then I noticed the comment tomfoolery and figured it would be amusing to point out the hypocrisy of your response. I suppose it was something to do while I listened!

  • Oh, and if 450-ish characters is a novel to you, you might want to work on the literary skills a bit. Just sayin'.

  • well I suppose if you have nothing better to do...though life is good. At least I'm not an American. Don't be a smart ass. It's not very attractive.

  • Not so much. And these email notifications are brilliant! Though you do have a point--would that I were representing my nationality as well as you have been.

  • uh what? Read that last part back to me.

  • I was trying to be more succinct for you as you don't like reading long replies.

nothing better to do - not so much

at least you're not american - you do have a point, though [slam on your behavior with the twat/wanker namecalling]

I suppose I could have been more clear, but I prioritized brevity before clarity and I see now that that was a mistake.

  • "would that I were representing my nationality as well as you have been." Ok, well nicely put...who knows what point you're trying to get across.

As for your US/British theory...pretty much everyone hates Americans.

  • oh dear. You sure know how to rant about things that are totally irrelevant. What a waste of time...

  • Because randomly saying "at least I'm not American" is pretty relevant to comments on a trombone solo, yeah. I think you got me there! Though honestly, if you think it's a waste of time, why do you keep responding? Only to assert your non-American superiority or something? Or are you as bored as I am and just posting for the hell of it, too?

  • Actually that was relevant to my first comment in particular, and numerous other comments you made about the UK and the states. A lot more so than talking about farmers. I don't need to assert my superiority, just watching American news does that. Though it's hardly necessary. Why not reply, you are? Just takes a few seconds. And I meant that you writing a whole comment on something completely irrelevant was a waste of time.

  • You mean "pfft whatever. Do you know who this guy is? Do you even know who Dyke are? heh, Americans. " ?

Looking at my comments, I mentioned the UK one time. And I initally mentioned the US in relation to a US band I had seen perform the same song.

Numerous other comments? I suppose this is on the same vein as your classification of 500 character posts as being novels.

  • In your comments alone Americans have been mentioned no less than 7 times. So tell me how farmers are more relevant than me making a comment about America? You can't deny that that comment of yours had absolutely nothing to do with anything at all, and that me making a comment about Americans did. So don't turn it back on me. The novel comment was a figure of speech so let it go, jesus. Leave it mate.

  • Boooooo.

Guys, quit your incessant arguing.. Take it to a forum. Not for Youtube...
