This is as traditional as it gets. The same gat is on You Tube with Rais Khan and Tari Khan - 20 years ago. I am posting this transcription on my site. Just type - Darbari and Sitar - in the You Tube search
@daz199md - dude, this a very lopsided understanding of things. vilayat khan had a distinct bias towards the melody and shahid has a rhythm bias. vilayat khan has an edge over sp in the fact that he engineered the chassis on which shahid has built his car. frankly, VK's engine, suspension and transmission systems have not been matched yet... sp brings you lots of add-on features like power windows, power seats, designer upholstery etc etc... that's the difference, if you understand the analogy
Standing on the shoulders of Giants as Einstien would say. Although he lacks the feel Ustad Vilayat Khan or Nikhil-Da ever had - even at the end of their careers - VK was older but so sublime. He is the Steve Vai of Sitar - and Steve Vai is famous and amazing so do not take it wrong . But he is NOT Eric Clapton nor is he Hendrix ; ) He mistakes technicality at times for musicality. They are not the same.
I could say a lot, but all I want to say is that I haven't seen such out-of-the-box rendition of Darbari as this. VK, Nikhil Banerjee stayed within the traditional parameters. Shahid Parvez doesn't break any rules but provides the 4th (and 5th, 6th...) dimension on rendition.
See the 1972 LP of Ustad Vilayat Khan playing Darbari then say what you want : ) It is an opinion sit that is all. Parvez is a great artist, but whatvever. Good luck, beautiful piece though. And no one climbed the higher dimensions that Nikhil-Da
Sorry about that last e-mail my computer is going nutty. In the last sentence I meant like Nikhil-Da - not that Nikhl-Da. And after opinion - "sit" does not belong.
Sir, you obviously have not listened to that much classical music. You say you have not "heard such an out-of-the-box???" rendition of Darbari. How many Darbari's have you heard? I am not sure you understand this art at the necessary level that one would need to have in order to make the type of discernemts between playing styles that you claim to hear.
I remember playing a party 7 years back - I remember telling an Uncle who had heard me play that I loved Shahid Parvez - back then he was my guy. He asked if I like Ustad Vilayat Khan. I flatly said, "No. I don't really get what he is trying to say." The uncle said, "Maybe one day you will". Although I did not understand then, I do understand now. On a lighter note, I enjoyed your Tuje Dekha To Ye Jaana Saanam -
My friend I am a non professional Sitar player..inspite of that I know 21 different styles or in your words 'rendition' to play Raga Darbari..A Raga can be played in various rendition-in various colours AND THIS IS NOT BREAKING THE TRADITION BUT THIS ALSO A MAJOR TRADITION ITSELF!!..Perhapes its the most deepest levels of tradition of playing the same Raga with same notes yet bringing out a separate 'rendition' each time..its interesting.Find a proper Guru.
I thought Darbari played in Tari saptak a lot and with faster pace and flow is Adana. Darbari is exact sames notes and phrases except is explored mostly in mandra and madhay saptak. Slower deeper phrases brings out the true Darbari bhav.
Darbari and adana are almost exactly the same except that adana doesn't employ some of the subtle alankar that Darbari does, namely certain andolits on the the gha and dha. Saptak and laya don't have anything to do with a raga. It's easy to confuse adana and darbari though. It's an extremely subtle difference.
In the north certain Ragas are referred to purwang and certain utarang types. We also do have ragas that get their bhav in certain saptaks, Sohini for example likes tar saptak phrases. True Darbari should be explored in mandra saptak at slower lay 1st. Hansadhwani on the other hand enjoys faster lay as its bhav is chanchal. This is a very deep and interesting topic.
WOW !

Nobody can do it better than this man...my opinion is that this is far better than Vilayat Khan could ever accomplish.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
listen to ustad ali akbar khan... darbari needs to be played even slower than this clip otherwise this will become adhana...

No . . . Adana is a different raga, but in the same thaat, asavari thaat. Speed does not change the raga, silly.
