The video is so irrelevant, irreverant and hilarious, and goes really great with this version of the track that sounds a lot more tremulous and clutzy.
I actually prefer this faster version, and what you've done here with the video, speeding it up and adding effects just really fits early REM's quirky - some may say almost dorky ;) - vibe. Good job!
Too fu*king awesome!!! You can take your hip-hop and divas and any other act today, combine 'em and they still can't touch the coolness REM had in the early days. Just a fantastic band!
I loved every single part of their first EP when it came out, much of this 1982 concert is from their debut, including Carnival of Sorts (Boxcars). which I saw the Feelies put through the Feeliesization they do to all covers recently at a reunion in Brooklyn...check out the REM Tribute on You Tube to see Mercer Million et al give homage to REM which was already inspired by the Feelies with their southern spin on it back in the day.
My ranking of the IRS albums: HOwever, they're all good
1. Fables
2. Murmur
3. Lifes Rich Pagaent
4. Reckoning
5. Document
I think Document stands on its own, and is the waypoint between periods in REM's career. It doesn't sound like any of its precursors, and it doesn't sound like much after it. It's kinda like Rubber Soul for The Beatles.
Don't get me wrong, I love everything from "Radio Free Europe" to New Adventures In Hi-Fi, but the only Warner Bros. album that has the same quality as Chronic Town and the five IRS studio LPs is Automatic For The People.
im sure its out - but i checked on several diferent lyrics sites and they all say out. but they rnt allways rite, if anybody has one of the original chronic town discs the lyrics are printed somehwre on the sleeve, could you tell us what the actual lyrics are?
there are no " actual " lyrics for any early REM songs .. Lyrically , the first three records are intentionally cryptic .. in fact , that was a large part of their early appeal , fans trying to decipher what michael was saying .... I remember when " cant get there from here " was on MTV , they had parts of the lyrics written out in the video .... it was a really big deal for hard core REM fans
Agreed Lifes Rich Pageant is such an underated album. So many classic songs. Fall On Me, Cuyahoga, Swan Swan H, Begin the Begin, I Believe and Superman. Fables of the Reconstruction is also superb.
fabels is cool, but it cant match life's rich pageant it has so many great songs, everyone thinks reckoning is flawless but i think lifes rich pageant is more so.
I love REM and one of my favorite things about early REM is the music's mystery and the obliqueness and yes even occasionally murky production values.
Wolves COMMA lower LOL. Little things like this....I wish I could describe how much I love this band. On second thought, glad I cant, cause I might end up sounding kinda gay.
All I'm saying is that it is heavily rumored. Besides this was done in a cheap studio in October 1981 so the sound is bound to have changed just a tad. And I've heard people get that sound out of a telecaster before, so it's not that outrageous.
This is their best song ever. Too bad it's from the early years, this means they haven't been able to do anything better than this since then. It's not like it's not the highest peak of Perfectness! :)) This is my cell ringtone.
my band and I used to play this song a lot. It wasn't an easy song at all, but for whatever reason it was an easy groove for us to fall into, Catapult and Driver 8 as well. Then we couldn't gel at all on Radio Free Europe or Rockville....go figure.
this is another one of my favorites. I've been to the r.e.m. timeline and i've seen tracks recorded wolves, lower[fast version] and i've always wonderd what it sounde like. I like the other version better but i like this too plus it's rare that's another thing that makes it so cool. Do you have a live version of Camera? I've always wanted to hear that live thanks!
actually when the band first came together they had little music knowledge, but bill berry could play guitar better than mike and pete. but today they are one of the best bands ever.
I think Mike Mills was pretty proficient as a bassist from the start having played various instruments since grade school. Peter Buck was the one initially a little rough around the edges. Stipe, even though primarily a singer has learned to play a little over the years.
I completely agree with you on Mills, he was flawless from the get-go, and clearly a trained musician. His harmonic bass playing, and high-harmony singing, have been a huge contribution to the band's sound.
This is a great song and it's cool to hear a different version. I can see why they redid it, though. They slow down quite a bit, more than once. It's hard to keep that kind of pace up for so long.
I think that Bill Berry 32 beat drumming on this track demonstrates more than a "little musical expertise". I agree with the last part of what you said though :P
Exactly....These Guys grew fast...=and Buck ALWAYS had it, Mills said he has the best right hand he's ever seen (ever try to play "some" of his stuff?)Another TNX - goes REMchout.ay
*Picks his jaw up off of the floor* I've wanted to hear this version for THEE longest time! Thanks a bunch! One item left to check off for the Wolves, Lower list...to hear *or even see* a very early live version of this song xD.
somehow this sounds very modern even though it's from 1980 something. funny how music evolves in loops.

Some say the 'chorus' is 'house in order', but I prefer to think it's:
"I won't say it in order...aaahaahaaha"
because the song is wolves, lower, but he says lower wolves in song

like your thinking there! i personally think its 'i wont sing it in order aaaahaahaahaa', does sound something like that!
