  • somehow this sounds very modern even though it's from 1980 something. funny how music evolves in loops.

  • beautiful, always wanted to hear this version

  • Hey REMchout!!! Thanks for uploading this great outtake! Could you please tell me what bootleg this is from??? Thanks!

  • @arthurbludgeon I ripped it from my Chronic Murmurings bootleg lp.

  • love the old rem music coz it's very raw music.

  • This is madness, haha.

  • Chronic Town is the best EP of all time.

All 5 songs are either 9s or 10s.

  • With the exception of South Central Rain, the best song they ever recorded.

  • By far, the better version

  • Wolves at the door!

  • Some say the 'chorus' is 'house in order', but I prefer to think it's:

    "I won't say it in order...aaahaahaaha"

because the song is wolves, lower, but he says lower wolves in song

  • like your thinking there! i personally think its 'i wont sing it in order aaaahaahaahaa', does sound something like that!

  • @racingfan2k10 It's "House in order". As in, put your house in order.

  • The video is so irrelevant, irreverant and hilarious, and goes really great with this version of the track that sounds a lot more tremulous and clutzy.

  • I actually prefer this faster version, and what you've done here with the video, speeding it up and adding effects just really fits early REM's quirky - some may say almost dorky ;) - vibe. Good job!

  • Too fu*king awesome!!! You can take your hip-hop and divas and any other act today, combine 'em and they still can't touch the coolness REM had in the early days. Just a fantastic band!

  • i salute you!

  • I loved every single part of their first EP when it came out, much of this 1982 concert is from their debut, including Carnival of Sorts (Boxcars). which I saw the Feelies put through the Feeliesization they do to all covers recently at a reunion in Brooklyn...check out the REM Tribute on You Tube to see Mercer Million et al give homage to REM which was already inspired by the Feelies with their southern spin on it back in the day.

  • sorry ... it is ... " here`s a house to put wolves at the door "

  • sorry, i still think its wolves out the door and tbh only the band knows for sure

  • My ranking of the IRS albums: HOwever, they're all good

    1. Fables

    2. Murmur

    3. Lifes Rich Pagaent

    4. Reckoning

    5. Document

I think Document stands on its own, and is the waypoint between periods in REM's career. It doesn't sound like any of its precursors, and it doesn't sound like much after it. It's kinda like Rubber Soul for The Beatles.

  • id be:

    1. Lifes Rich Pagaent

    2. Mumer

    3. Fables

    4. Reckoning

i dont inclued document coz its ace but dusnt realy fit into them.

  • @ILoveMikeyStipey Nice one!

    I'd say:

    1. Life's Rich Pagaent

    2. Fables

    3. Chronic Town

    4. Murmur

    5. Reckoning

    6. Dead Letter Office!

  • @psychanaut Their IRS stuff rules!!

    For me,

    1. Fables

    2. Chronic Town

    3. Murmur

    4. Reckoning

    5. Pageant

    6. Document

  • @ultramegaunknown For me,

    1. Lifes Rich Pageant

    2. Murmur

    3. Chronic Town

    4. Fables of the Reconstruction

    5. Reckoning

    6. Document

    7. Dead Letter Office

Don't get me wrong, I love everything from "Radio Free Europe" to New Adventures In Hi-Fi, but the only Warner Bros. album that has the same quality as Chronic Town and the five IRS studio LPs is Automatic For The People.

  • Comment removed

  • lol! from 48-52 secs in the video looks like a kid on sugar playing the drums!

  • Mike Mills!!! His vocals and bass just...make this whole record.

  • ask the producer, mitch easter

  • wolves at the door?

    or,

    wolves out the door?

  • I always heard wolves at the door.

  • im sure its wolves out the door

  • Now that I listen to it more, it sounds like both at different points in the song.

  • im sure its out - but i checked on several diferent lyrics sites and they all say out. but they rnt allways rite, if anybody has one of the original chronic town discs the lyrics are printed somehwre on the sleeve, could you tell us what the actual lyrics are?

  • Come to think of it, we can't even listen to live versions, because Michael liked to change lyrics.

  • Oh he has to be so awkward dusnt he. lol i love him. he probably wanted discussions like this over his lyrics, it probably pleases him greatly lol

  • there are no " actual " lyrics for any early REM songs .. Lyrically , the first three records are intentionally cryptic .. in fact , that was a large part of their early appeal , fans trying to decipher what michael was saying .... I remember when " cant get there from here " was on MTV , they had parts of the lyrics written out in the video .... it was a really big deal for hard core REM fans

  • no ... it is " here`s a place to put wolves AT the door "

  • "at" -- (does it really matter....?)

  • again, faster the better

  • If you want a very unique REM album don't just listen to Murmur but also fables of the reconstruction

  • Don't forget Reckoning! REM's first four albums are absolute genius.

  • Agreed! All that has not heard Harborcoat, please, you all have a record to buy!!

  • Don't forget- June 23rd, the Deluxe Edition of Reckoning comes out!!

  • Defo - Harborcoat Rules

Lifes Rich Pagneant is definatly the best of their earlys though

  • Agreed Lifes Rich Pageant is such an underated album. So many classic songs. Fall On Me, Cuyahoga, Swan Swan H, Begin the Begin, I Believe and Superman. Fables of the Reconstruction is also superb.

  • fabels is cool, but it cant match life's rich pageant it has so many great songs, everyone thinks reckoning is flawless but i think lifes rich pageant is more so.

  • I love REM and one of my favorite things about early REM is the music's mystery and the obliqueness and yes even occasionally murky production values.

  • My favourite REM song as well....as perfect as pop gets.

Ask by the Go Betweens runs it a close second...

  • Perfect.

  • Wolves COMMA lower LOL. Little things like this....I wish I could describe how much I love this band. On second thought, glad I cant, cause I might end up sounding kinda gay.

  • this is my favorite rem album. There later stuff wasn't as good. I wish they had stayed this sound.

Rickenbacker makes the best guitars and basses.

  • it's rumored that Buck actually only used telecasters on this album and didn't start with ricks until Murmur. Cool either way

  • That is surely a Rick. There's no mistaking the sound for a Telecaster here.

  • All I'm saying is that it is heavily rumored. Besides this was done in a cheap studio in October 1981 so the sound is bound to have changed just a tad. And I've heard people get that sound out of a telecaster before, so it's not that outrageous.

  • JUST AMAZING CLASSIC

  • This is their best song ever. Too bad it's from the early years, this means they haven't been able to do anything better than this since then. It's not like it's not the highest peak of Perfectness! :)) This is my cell ringtone.

  • I think this is their best song too (the version from Chronic Town though)

  • This is a beautiful song. I can't believe I only found it today. I've been playing it all morning. :)

  • my band and I used to play this song a lot. It wasn't an easy song at all, but for whatever reason it was an easy groove for us to fall into, Catapult and Driver 8 as well. Then we couldn't gel at all on Radio Free Europe or Rockville....go figure.

  • and I thought playing the riff from the Chronic Town was hard...

  • this is another one of my favorites. I've been to the r.e.m. timeline and i've seen tracks recorded wolves, lower[fast version] and i've always wonderd what it sounde like. I like the other version better but i like this too plus it's rare that's another thing that makes it so cool. Do you have a live version of Camera? I've always wanted to hear that live thanks!

  • actually when the band first came together they had little music knowledge, but bill berry could play guitar better than mike and pete. but today they are one of the best bands ever.

  • I think Mike Mills was pretty proficient as a bassist from the start having played various instruments since grade school. Peter Buck was the one initially a little rough around the edges. Stipe, even though primarily a singer has learned to play a little over the years.

  • I completely agree with you on Mills, he was flawless from the get-go, and clearly a trained musician. His harmonic bass playing, and high-harmony singing, have been a huge contribution to the band's sound.

  • This is a great song and it's cool to hear a different version. I can see why they redid it, though. They slow down quite a bit, more than once. It's hard to keep that kind of pace up for so long.

Where did the video come from?

  • I just sped up the wolves, lower video and made it look different...

  • love this version the same as on the Ep

  • Cool!

  • 4 kids from UGA with little music expertise turned into one of greatest bands ever.

  • UGA?

  • university of georgia

  • @ Athens :))

  • I think that Bill Berry 32 beat drumming on this track demonstrates more than a "little musical expertise". I agree with the last part of what you said though :P

  • Exactly....These Guys grew fast...=and Buck ALWAYS had it, Mills said he has the best right hand he's ever seen (ever try to play "some" of his stuff?)Another TNX - goes REMchout.ay

  • siempre con las mejores tomas y videos =)

    a must

  • Majestuosa version se oye muy potente....sobre todo el bajo de mike mills....un hit.

  • This is on the "When the light is mine" DVD. Lot's of good "Cutting Edge" footage too.

  • Nope, on there is the regular "slow" version.

  • yep, I went back an listened and it's the slow version. My bad.

  • Thanks for posting - one of my fave REM songs - jangletastic!

  • I'd love to see or hear "Kohoutek" live if you have it in your files. This is freakin' excellent.

  • I just posted it...should be up soon.

  • *Picks his jaw up off of the floor* I've wanted to hear this version for THEE longest time! Thanks a bunch! One item left to check off for the Wolves, Lower list...to hear *or even see* a very early live version of this song xD.

  • I have lots of bootlegs I'm tempted to put up like this...

  • Ill check my tapes for ya on a live version of it!

  • That's a great video. Thanks so much for putting all of these on here. Just curious, where did you get all of them?

  • I used to trade tapes alot...collecting bootlegs and stuff...glad I kept all of it!
