yes the green stuff is actually thorn vines, it is based off of the Holy Crown of Thorns. He did it to become a monster of equal power to Alucard, unfortunately Alucard rips out the nail (heart included) and kills anderson with his Jackle.

When anderson died he became a pile of dust, unfortunately though Walter (who happened to be the mole in hellsing, and was reverted to his younger age of 14 by the doctor) stamped his foot into Andersons ashes.

One thing that isn't well known is that Walter is jealous of Alucard's immortality and power. He also realizes while he is battling Hans Gunsche (the captain) that he is loosing his touch in his old age (65). As for anderson I have no clue. The only thing anyone can tell is that he has an irish accent. I do know a big spoiler about the major though, if you want to hear it.

I don't know. I think he was a spy from the start. He was even going to let integra's uncle kill her, note that at the begining of OVA one Walter isn't there to protect her... hmm suspicious. Also the spoiler is that The major is actually an android with his mind programmed into it. first off how does someone live fifty years and not look a day older from world war two. Also when Shrodinger commented the major should go on a diet, he stated "that would be quite impossible".

Okay, well here it is. Shrodinger can simply teleport himself at will by simply believeing he is somewhere, and when al shot him to shit he simply believed he was okay. Well here's the kicker, Shrodinger commits suicide and alucard absorbs him. by absorbing him he absorbs his power, however shro must be aware of himself to exist in this plane of existence. unfortunately because of all the people al's absorbed he isn't aware of himself anymore and simply fades away. at least for 20 years or so.
