Its a UMPC not ba PDA Phone . The difference being the Shift has an IBM PC processor so it can run desktop operating systems .

It also is the first device to feture dual processors (X86 and ARM) which allows it to switch between Windows Mobile (3 day battery life) and a desktop operating system .

The shift is a winner , Well worth the money.

i think ratgt you r very confused. the shift CAN be used as a phone . but that does NOT mean it is a phone. you could also say it is a pmp because it can ge used as one . maybe you would like to compare it to a piecce of paper because u can draw on it , then you could say it is too heavy and expensive compared to ipaper.

It has been confirmed that even though you can insert your SIM and surf using GPRS or 3G you cannot use it to make or receive voice calls. Which makes sense considering that you would have to pop this thing out every time to check who is calling or make a phone call.

The HTC is trying to be your notebook replacement, while iPhone is a Smartphone replacement. Even if I had the HTC, I would be ashamed to pull it out of my bag (certainly NOT my pocket, unlike the iPhone) and put it against my ear. And even with a Bluetooth headset, you have to pull it out and ridicule yourself, because you have to see who's calling...

Dear God you're not supposed to use this as a phone. Like arzo2000 pointed out, the SIM card is only for accessing the mobile web. The assumption made is that you would have another phone with you. And unlike the iPhone, the Shift has 3G Data, making web browsing much faster than the poky EDGE connection on the iPhone when you're away from a Wi-Fi hotspot.

IT IS supposed to be used as a phone according to this psycho! Also, by the time it arrives in my market (the European) chances are that it'll have 3G. As for browsing, iPhone is using a PROPER version of Safari, while Shift uses a cut-down version of IE, a browser famous for its BAD results in most tests (slow, glitched, 'fragile', etc.) Also, from personal experience with WM devices: Same MS sh*t, different make...

Okay first off: If there was an iPhone with 3G, don't you think the US would get it first? We are Apple's primary market. And second, maybe you weren't listening when he said the Shift runs ALL OF WINDOWS. As in, it runs Windows VISTA, not WM. Check online, you'll see that I'm right. So unlike the iPhone, you get a FULL BROWSER on the Shift, and best of all you can use any browser out there: IE7, Firefox, Opera, whatever! Can you do that on the iPhone?

OK, so point one: NO - It wouldn't be logical for you to FIRST get the 3G enabled iPhone. You should already know that while the WHOLE continent of Europe is covered by 3G networks, in the US it's only a handful of places that feature it. Besides, you already had the enjoyment of getting your hands on the first iPhone, so isn't a bit selfish demanding the exclusivity on 3G iPhone as well?

As for the Shift, it's EVEN worse that it isn't on WM. ALL companies avoid the implementation of full OSs on mobile devices like fire & ice, and strive for portable OSs which omit ALL bugs, vulnerabilities, viruses, etc. that the normal OS's are garbled with. Except for... Apple! They're SO sure of their OS, that they dare to put the full core of Mac OS X on such a device, and judging from all the reviews so far, it has been a flawless choice!...

Ok, ok. Sorry. Maybe, and I'm saying MAYBE, you didn't realise me stretching out that it's EVEN WORSE that it features FULL OS!!!! Can't imagine TRYING to answer a call through my Bluetooth handset and all of the sudden, for no reason, my BT drops because of Windowz-driver conflict, or the OS freezes because of a Windowz malware - Whereas, companies making PDA or Smartphones (Almost like full PCs) AVOID full OS on their devices, just to avoid this kind of bullshit!!!

i have a umpc. i have it somewhere round the house , kitchen , sofa etc , it is very handy and conveniant not to be fixed to one spot. also i use it for work in my car for gps and entertainment. a phone is too small for my needs and dont have full os , and laptop can not be mounted on the dash. u should watch these things , theu are about to be BIG
