Remarks attest to the greatness of the tune. Many can each put their own stamp on it and fans choose their faves! I've heard and liked many versions. Thanks for posting!
It's the first time I ever hear this beautiful song!.. Sandy Denny does such a wonderful version I couldn't enjoy any other after hearing this!.. And I loved this painting as the background for this song.. Thank you! :)
@MRBLINDBOYGRUNT HI, back in the 60's many people did cover versions of Dylan's songs as well as their own music, Fairport & Sandy being good examples of this modern tradition. 'I'll Keep It With Mine' from 'What We Did On Our Holidays', 'Si Tu Dois Partir', 'Percy's Song' & 'Million Dollar Bash' from 'Unhalfbricking', all written by The Bard. His wonderful songs are timeless, though it sure feels like 'tomorrow IS a long time'. May his song always be sung...Thanks for your comments :)
Hear..hear! I listened to version because of theirs...brings back memories from what seems to be a l-o-n-g time ago. Just curious themugster...where are you from? One doesn't run into very many folks who know Ian & Sylvia these days.
South Shore, L.I. (Amityville...how about you, Bill?), but spent weekends in the Village 1961-70 when I wasn't surfing Gilgo, luckily, so when I read David Hajdu's great book about that Great Urban Folk Scare it was like recapturing my misspent youth...I was in all those audiences! Have seen both I & S perform (separately, of course) in the last ten years...Sylvia with Quartette, Ian solo backed up by a bassist. Neither of them had lost a lick!
After listening to dozens of recordings of this song by nearly every artist I could find, I have decided that Sandy Denny's version takes the cake. Her voice simply mesmerizes me, supplying a current of sorrow beneath its calm, laid-back surface, and is complemented exquisitely by pedal steel guitar.
The runners-up are Dylan (throaty and heartfelt) and Odetta (haunting, powerful blues), with Elvis not far behind. There's also a YouTube version by shuber that's well worth a listen.
Sandy always seemed a little mysterious to me. She's usually very good, and she's mighty fine here.
Pedal steel can be one of the most beautiful instruments on earth. It can also be so melancholy at times that it's overwhelming (and I love melancholy music). That's not the case here, though.
I wish someone would upload Judy Collins' shattering performance of this; it's on her Fifth Album, which I think is her finest recorded achievement. Her version moves me to tears; Sandy's is a treatment of the song, Judy's is a real-life heartbreak.
There is something about her phrasing (I think that's what you call it) that is so appealing in all of her songs- you can listen over and over to her songs and not tire of them.
I'm not sure I have the answer, but I find that Denny's phrasing in this song reminds me of Willie Nelson in that she often falls behind the beat, lingering on this or that syllable before going back on tempo; her voice is constantly wandering off the main road onto that "crooked trail."
My one complaint is her timing on the line "That I remember in my true love's eyes" -- she comes in on the beat, while Dylan comes in a half-step later, which sounds better to my ears.
Ah well, to each their own as I say, especially when it concerns music. Since I'm also a prof. musician...I come at it from my heart & soul reaction as a musician, hearing the little things & knowing some of the technical feats. As long as we all enjoy it &/or are moved by it...that's what matters most, imo. Each one brings their own perspective. Be moved by yours!
ps- I Do Love Nick Drake, btw! & Dylan's original version is Wonderful!
Thanks for your comment (not so) dullsville...glad you like this one. I have really enjoyed watching/listening to the fantastic Sandy Denny tracks you have posted...and your other videos too... it's good to see 'The Lady' up there getting some of the attention she so much deserves!
Check out Dorris Henderson's version on Spotify. A gem from 1967 with John Renbourn on guitar.

Une des plus belles voix de la musique! Peut-être la meilleure. Et une chanson magnifique, du meilleur compositeur de tous les temps, à mon avis ;)

First time I'd ever heard this by Ms. Denny...lovely!
My absolute favorite version is Ian & Sylvia Tyson's, on their "Four Strong Winds" LP (1964), with their angelic harmonies. They
recorded it before His Bobness did, as I recall,
HUGELY RECOMMENDED!
