The Susan Boyle phenomenon came about because she appeared on stage looking like a middle aged housewife who didn't get out much. And when she spoke of her dream of superstardom you could see the looks on the judges and audiences faces - to say - oh THIS ought to be good. I truly feel she has come as far as she has based on the shock factor. Had she arrived on stage looking like a knockout and had produced the same sound - I doubt many would have been overly impressed.

That isn't makeup -- just faulty camera work and lighting bouncing off the video. She was natural and unmadeup -- just a pretty, rather shy young girl. Even with that shyness, she went on, because she loved so much to sing -- and, I think, with a remarkably beautiful voice even back then without any professional experience as yet. A courageous and inspiring person.

The accompaniment is simply too loud; the voice is not supposed to be just another instrument in the band -- it's meant to be the SOLO. The countermelody actually drowns the melodic line sung by Miss Boyle! It may sound worse in this recording, depending on where the camera mike was located with regard to the performers' amps. (PS This is no reflection on the performers; the camera may simply have been too close to the keyboard amps instead of the amps for Miss Boyle's microphone.)

In 1984 there were a lot of female singers out there with comparable "pipes", without being a pretty package you'd not be picked up and promoted. even today, if she was young and beautiful she'd be one of hundreds.

I'm just saying the average casting call or audition in the day would find plenty of attractive women who were great singers, and if she was a bit better it is the whole package the record company markets.
