@hugatag. My horse does indeed go best in heavy going. His father is the racehorse Sheer Danzig but his mother is an Irish Draught mare. He is a stunning Grey roan. He will never win a flat race but he is an amazing eventer. He has lots of stamina and will jump anything put in front of him especially out of mud!
he may have only had a short career on the track, but his love juice has been providing much joy and quick horses, for many generations... much appreciated
wow..put a blaze on his face and it's like looking at hard spun..too bad about the bone chips but danzig did leave a huge mark in the breeding shed..i can't wait to see the little hard spun's next spring..he was always my favorite.i wish they had kept him racing for another year..he would have given curlin something to run at..how cool would that have been?
Danzig will go down as one of the greatest in the breeding shed,oh actually he already is,not bad for a horse with bad legs, which betrayed him on the track.
Hard Spun could be competitive at any distance the trainer chooses. He's just that type of horse. Personally i think he would of made a terrific miler.
Hard Spun? A sprinter? Bull shit. He can sprint because he's versitile. I don't know about you, ValerieHarris1, but I'll remember him in 10 years because he will make a great stud, I'm sure.
Well, it's been said that FuPeg was the best bred horse of all time. That's entirely debatable of course, depending on which stallion or dam one prefers.
Whats all this talk about Hard Spun being just a sprinter? That is just ridiculous,2nd in THE 1 1/4 MILE KENTUCKY DERBY!!!! And what the hell is wrong with being a sprinter? A good horse is a good horse.
I agree with you about Danzig 100 percent! I breed racehorses, and I look for nice sound mares to breed. I will not breed to a sub-par stud just to get a sound foal. I have my limits of course about how far I'll go when it comes to a stud's soundness. A horse like Danzig, I would not hesitate to breed mares to him. The TB has had unsound strains in it's blood for generations. buy sound mares!
Danzig DOES produce fast, brilliant babies but many of them retire early, like ValerieHarris1 was saying, because he passed on many good traits but also his weak joints.
Right. Danzig passed those horrid knees to his progeny Hard Spun...not! HS ran in all 3 triple crown races, placed and showed in the 1st two, came back and finished 2nd in the Haskell nosing out Curlin, then goes back to 7 furlongs and wins the Kings Bishop. Sound as hell. Danzig's bone spurs were the product of high impact motion, much like Barbaro's injury. You can not pass on genetics to make bad knees likely. Those dreadful knees mounted more mares and threw more champs than any modern stud.
Luckily, history will judge Danzig as a stud. More US graded stakes winners than any other stud in past 40 years. His progeny, Danehill, is Europe's greatest stud, producing 300 graded stakes winners. Danzig's sire Northern Dancer was extremely sound...all time leading US Stud.
Hard Spun has won graded stakes at 8 and 9 furlongs. That is not a sprint. Get your facts straight before giving an opinion.
Lauren Stitch is an expert on pedigrees, considers Danzig this generation's greatest stud
Barbaro was a very good horse. Most true horsemen like myself cannot say he was better than Street Sense. Finishing 2nd to SS who had a clear rail makes HS a sprinter?
Ghostzapper never won over 8 furlongs until he won the 2004 BC Classic. HS handled 9 furlongs better than Curlin last time out. Lets wait awhile, and remember Lawyer Ron is Danzig's bloodline (Langfuhr)
Actualy, Danzigs knee was not genetic, I don't know whom you spoke with but bone chips are not a genetic condition, I have bone chips in my leg from a riding accident, will that pass on to my children? of course not. I own a Danzig stallion and a Danzig grandson and both have lovely knees and are exseptional athletes, Barbaro is whom he is, a wonderfull horse whos time came to soon but Hard Spun deserves the same respect, for he withstood the test of time and champions.
Bone chips are not a genetic condition? Well, no, but weak bones that are prone to chipping are. ... Danzig has sired some horses who ran for a very long time. He's also sired many that did not. On the whole, with an average number of starts around 13 in a career, I'd say the soundness of his progeny is very average. ... He is, however, the all-time leading sire of stakeswinners, with 200 out of 1,099 registered foals, an absolutely SICK 18 percent.
bone chips themselves are not genetic but certain conformation attributes may make them more prone to them such as large built horse at a young age - similar to OCD lesions. Not directly genetic, but the predisposition to them is there. Also, just the nature of the very sport of racing, intensity of training, and young developing bones of horses make them more likely to develop chips. Very common within racehorses.
Dang! Frank Dwyer Jr. and Marshall Cassidy (in his 1st year as full-time NYRA voice replacing Chic Anderson) on the call!!! Good stuff! A perfect title for this post, cf1970, what might have been indeed.
Thanks for your kind words, I appreciate it. This video was a real find. Classic commentary and racecalls. Danzig was a star in his short career, of that there is no doubt. Take care.
I'm learning a lot here, really brave horse, Danzig was. It's wonderful that he was a great sire, even though... we couldn't know what might have been.
Hi bon. I've learned a lot as well. Some of the comments I've read have been very informative. It's been fun to research and learn about all of these great champions. Danzig was a brave boy, it's sad that he didn't have the chance to show his full potential. Thanks for stopping by. Take care.
Really Sad, Danzig horse's generally run well on the turf. I guess if he had a longer carrer he might have been just as good or even better on the turf. Great video.
It is sad that he had so much trouble physically. He was terrific and showed great stamina and speed that would have stood him in good stead on the Derby trail. He would have been a Derby favourite I'm sure. Thanks for posting. Glad you enjoyed it. Take care.

Sorry my last comment should have read I now own a great-grandson of Danzig! Still thank you very much for the clip I have always wanted to see him.

@em1676 Is your horse a mudder? I ask because many horses from Danzig are great in the mud.

Wow, what a find! Thank you so much for posting this.
Three starts. Three wins. And it still doesn't begin to sum up Danzig's tremendous superiority. What amazing action. And then that last gear!
I will never look at bloodstock agent Joe Brocklebank the same way again when I see him at the sales. Now every time I see him I will think:
"That man rode Danzig."

I was at the race Danzig won at Aqueduct,
as I lived in the neighborhood of Ozone park
and was a freshman in high school.

That must have been terrific to see. It's a real shame his career was so short; he was a monster runner.
Thanks for the comments.

Danzig was horribly unsound and passed those horrid knees on to his progeny. Dreadful that the industry supports unsoundness for the almighty dollar.

Big deal - Hard Spun is a spinter at best. Please don't utter his name in the same breath as Barbaro.
Danzigs have notoriously bad knees - at least that is what the creme de la creme breeding analysts ahve told me (in private, of course.)
In 10 years no one will remember Hard Spun.
Barbaro will be remembered forever.
Did you ever see that bowling ball Danzig had for a knee? UGH!

I only wish he hadn't had such trouble, he would have been a classic winner at the very least, and quite possibly a Triple Crown winner.
