  • Ralph Baer>gunpi yokoi >shigiru miyamoto

    any objection >:)

  • Is Ralph Baer still alive?

  • @JGamer12

    Yes.

  • Great interview and yea I agree he is the father of video games

  • Comment removed

  • the father of the videogames must be the must respected videogame creator than anyone

  • Pong was not the first game!

  • amazing

  • yeah dude good vid ..

  • lol, who has a wristwatch anymore?

    the thing has become obsolete

  • Great video with very professional approach as usual but i wish you had asked him whether or not he's playing video games himself and his opinion about the current games.

  • @subrealms I did ask him, but didn't show it. He doesn't play games and doesn't like modern games.

  • @blacklily8 Thanks. :)

  • All I can say is : respect from all old school gamers :)

  • Matt, thank you for making these videos. I am learning a lot and they are a real treat to behold. Much respect to Mr. Baer as well.

  • that was fantastic,, really ...

have you got anymore of the Baer interview around? That would of been so cool talking to the man himself.. Id really like to hear more about his efforts protecting his patents.. perhaps ill need to shell out for his book.

  • Matt, I really like your format and approach. You interview great people and you're not biased. Also, your tone fits with the interviews very well, unlike others who are either loud or smug.

I wish you the best of luck and I'd be following your interviews with Romero to the end.

  • Thanks, Amig. I try my best!

  • Muito maneiro, da antiga heheh.....

  • Wow Ralph Bear!

You top yourself Matt! Great interview, I can't wait for you to put out a DVD with all sorts of added footage.

  • Incredible, Matt!

I enjoy your comments, as stated before.

Very true, about that door :)

  • Phenomenal Interview :) Well done Matt!!

  • Oh wow I've sure missed these! Two weeks without a computer and the worst part was my missed matt chats!!

  • Hehe. Sorry to hear about your computer woes!

  • Oh wow brilliant, you just need Nolan Bushnell on next :p

  • I wish!

  • This interview is simply too awesome!

  • I have to say that the interviews that you have started to post as of late is really welcoming addition. Hope to see more of that! Keep on doing a great work Matt!

  • im still in shock you managed to get this interview, unbelievable work!! matt sir, you have surpassed yourself

  • Surely needs to be a three part 30 minute interview that you could sell to cable TV or someone! This is HISTORY! It should be seen by more than 301 people and being made by Matt Chat - no disrespect!

I see the same thing beginning to happen now with DOS PC gaming. It's slowly being written out of gaming history books dominated by console gaming! :(

  • My thoughts exactly, jeebus!

  • I agree, and if I could post 30 minute videos I would probably do so, though Matt Chat would then be a monthly rather than a weekly thing most likely. :)

We *are* making a feature film documentary about the topic with Lux Digital Pictures. Right now it's called "Gameplay" and steadily nearing production. I'll try to post some news about it when I learn more.

  • Completely agree! a 40-45 minutes long (1 hour air time) interview that should air on G4, History Channel and more.

Your work has always been really pro but this is History.

  • Amazing interview, for so simple hardware pong is genius idea.

  • Matt excellent stuff 25/5!!! if that was possible...

One remark.... Arrrrgghhh way too short d**n youtube! Would love to see a second part if you got enough material....

    :P

  • Me, too. I might end up posting a 2nd part.

  • Would you? Oh that would just be wonderfull! You really made my day with this video!

Mr Bear is actually quite similar to my father-in-law (also an engineer, but he worked for philips). And Mr. Bear is a lot older. :P

  • I'll second that (the bit about two parts being wonderful; I don't have a father-in-law!) This sort of stuff is fascinating, and really does need to be recorded for history. I can seriously see this being watched in 100 years' time.

  • wow man great interview it was awesome to see an interview with the man that started it all lol.

  • Good job getting an interview with a legend of the caliber of Ralph Baer--it was great to hear his story. I appreciate your show as always, keep it coming!

  • I remember seeing that video of the pong demonstration, what grounbreaking work. Thanks for getting the interview.

  • Superb, great new year vid should be 10 stars, but only got five to rate ;-(

  • This video will go down as a "Classic Matt Chat" Thanks for doing it! Amazing man and all that he has seen. By the way he mentioned my hometown of Ft Wayne, Indiana!

  • Thanks, Tyr. Adding subtitles would probably take too long on this end, but I sympathize with your plight. Perhaps there is someone willing to help?

  • It is very hard to get them. It just takes a lot of searching on the web and polite emails, but it's mostly hit or miss. I feel quite lucky to have gotten the ones I have!

  • No! These recent Matt Chats are so good! I wish we could watch these interviews for an hour or longer, it's so interesting! I know you have more, you gotta make a DVD or something...

  • Ha! I've thought about that before. I've even heard of some other Youtubers putting out DVDs. It's something I'll look into eventually. Maybe when and if I hit 1000+ subs I'll get more serious about. ;P

  • Awesome video man! I was at a videogames convention here in Venezuela back at december 2008 and we had a video conference with Ralph Baer, with live questions from the audience and all that... He's a great a great person, and he deserves the title of father of videogames because of his work.

    Thanks for sharing this!

  • Venezuela; wow. He DOES get around. It was really nice of him to be interviewed; lots of fun, too. He's quite a character.

  • Another brilliant interview matt, its a real shame you have to make these 10mins, would be great to watch an hour interview :) do you have anymore interviews planned?

  • I've been trying to set some more up, but it's very hit or miss. There are , of course, hundreds of people I'd love to interview for the show. If anyone knows a good candidate personally or has contact info, please share. ;P

  • Good one Matt

  • Very interesting video Matt. Your videos are really worth watching ;) keep it up!

  • I love these interviews, really awesome of you to get in touch with all these great people and letting us see the results of the interviews. It was really nice hear hearing Baers story, from Baer himself :) Excellent as always!

  • Awesome vid once again!

    Love the interviews. ^_^

Many Thanks to you and Mr Baer for doing this.

  • That was very interesting! Did you talk about his vision of the future of games, then - along the way, up to now? Although he stated that he thought he had just created a new toy and never thought it would be an industry, I'd like to know how he has experienced the rise of gaming in the 80's and what games he has played, or would have played, himself. 10 minutes is too short for an interview with God! (lol)

  • Hehe. He has lots of ideas for new games as well; I hope he is able to interest some publishers in them. However, to my knowledge he isn't a hardcore gamer himself--more interested in the hardware.

  • LOL @ end. Innovators are rarely good businessmen. Steve Jobs being one of those rare cases.

  • Amazing. From the pic it appears that the Brown Box package consisted of console, two controllers and a lightgun. You really can see 'where things were going'!

  • I love the "Red Ryder" BB gun look of that light gun. I'd have great fun with that. I thought about buying the buck hunter game for Wii, but just can't imagine it being as fun as a real light gun.

  • 'You'll shoot your eye out kid!'

  • This was beautiful, Matt. My favorite video of yours thus far! And, as such, I favorited it! Lol. Five Stars, my friend. As always. =)

  • Amazing stuff Matt! Thanks for aranging and putting this out, really awesome. Also thanks to Ralph Baer to be willing to talk to us, that's really great. I only read about the legend, so it's fun to see and hear himself talking about it.

  • I really like these interviews, it's great that you have the connections and knowhow to make these possible and that you share them with us here on youtube. Keep the great content coming!

  • Very interesting stuff. Still watching your show every week and loving it!

  • Wow! Great vid!

  • Always, always love your show. Great interview!

  • Not only was this a great Matt Chat, this was truly an epic, groundbreaking episode! OMG, I can't believe you scored an interview with Ralph Baer!

If there was ever a call for a two-part (or more) episode, though, this would have been it. Mr. Baer's humble (in his mind) invention at the time truly shook the world!

Saying "a truly amazing Matt Chat" doesn't do the episode justice! Thank you, Mr. Baer, for your recollections, your inventions, and your wisdom!

  • Thanks, Rob. I do have plenty of additional material. Not sure if I should make an "outtakes" video or just save it for a future episode. Or perhaps Matt Chat the DVD? :P

  • DVD!!

  • Another great video! And you got to speak with the father of videogames!

Matt, thanks a million for taking the time to conduct this interview! Your viewership will get stronger as time goes by! Excellent job!

  • Excellent interview! I saw him via skype at the video games live concert but this was a step up from that for sure. Thanks for getting this out to all of us Matt.

  • Jeezus! You're lucky to have talked to these legends! Another great video!

  • Wow Matt you have outdone yourself! Great interview, really good to get this info out to people who may not of been aware.

  • This is very interesting, I didn't know all this stuff before. Nice video.

  • Amazing stuff. I wish more people would to these reviews.

  • If today's video game scene was unimagineable in the mid 60's what will the scene look like in another 50 years? Thanks for the interview Matt. Fascinating stuff ... and fun stuff too!

  • Honestly I have a hard time imagining what things will be like 10 years from now

  • What I've noticed is that people tend to be wildly wrong with that kind of thing--all those 50s futurist posters showing us with rocket ships and personal robots in the 1990s, for instance. On the other hand, people tend to miss things like the internet. Still, it's fun to think about.

  • It doesn't work for me. I hope it comes back.

  • It's back and it's great stuff.

  • That's good; was getting worried. Thanks!

  • Man you should post your work over at ScrewAttack as well, cause i can't believe it, you score an interview of a lifetime with Mr. Baer, and get so little views, where someone like that lameoid Fred gets hundreds of views in only a few mins, and thousands with in hours. Really just blows my mind, great stuff, keep up the good work, and hope you show some more of the Interview with Mr. Baer.

  • I totally agree on what you say

  • Well, I'm sure I'll get more views eventually. I just don't have a way to really advertise my stuff. Still, people are stumbling on the series everyday from YouTube and the audience is growing.

  • Hmm I don't feel the your show fits with Screw Attack. better on Retroware TV.

  • amazing. I cant believe you interviewed him. i saw him on a g4 program one time and was fascinated.

  • He's spoken on so many occasions that I've lost track of them. He gets around!

  • This sounds so cool I can't watch it yet though because of YouTube video's I am not able to watch until about 1 hour after the video is made for some reason.

  • Yes, this often happens. Youtube needs time to re-render it in their preferred format.

  • Because of this guy, the ColecoVision game system was released... but only a few persons know that.

  • Yes, he also talked about his work fixing their problems with RF interference, though I couldn't pack it all in. Funny story, too.
