White Music was most definitely the best thing XTC ever put out, this lineup was blinding. I saw a lot of their gigs in 77 and they were even better live than on vinyl. A band that were years ahead of their time.
They totally cut out the intro to this video, which I think is the best part. You see a close up of Barry's hand hitting the keyboard playing the one-note riff intro. Then when he stops, he flips his hand up to flip you the bird! LOL!
you are mad. to say that xtc sucked after barry left... whats the name of barrys band again? oh yeah it doesnt matter... XTC is the BEST BAND EVER... how can i agree so much with your previous comment and then read this one... u are so wrong... maybe u are trying to be funny? u didnt really mean that... andy said that he only listens to this early stuff when he is drunk... he equates it to "looking at baby pictures" lol saying "we made an awful noise"
I love the Barry Andrews era and everything with Dave Gregory that followed. My love for the band came to a disappointing end with the "Andy and Colin Show" Apple Venus, Wasp Star muddle. That's when it all went pear shaped. After the brilliant Nonsuch XTC were done for me.
have you ever listened to super tuff or my weapon? those are bad songs, the only two that he wrote on go 2, and the worst ones on the album. in my opinion
nooooooo i heartily disagree. if that, super tuff and red weren't on go2 i would enjoy the album a lot more. meccanik dancing is fucking sweet, brilliant song
Ah you Fuckin Mad? or Just Deaf? or Both? Listen Dupe (if you can) Barry was important in the early years and contributed some weird flavours in the brew. But how much fish sauce can you take on your chocolate? You probably like Chocolate sauce on your fish!! Worth trying maybe.. or maybe not.... Indulge me... List B A's top 10 tracks... I can wait......
You are all clearly without taste, discernment, or anything approaching an ear for music. Shame on you all. Without doubt, the finest consistent recording XTC made was "English Settlement".
The best single tracks they ever recorded (well, mainly Partridge and Andrews) was the Dub "Go +", released with "Go 2". Far out and wonderful attempts to meld reggae/dub beats with english balladeering. Not entirely successful, but a heroic failure...
I bought this unheard as a 12-incher because I liked the title and the crap 3-D non-graphics. I played it in my parents house and it was the most exciting thing ever. The jerky stops halfway through instrumentals, or ensembles just completely got a 16 year old's flaky grasp on reality. I was hooked.
When they went on to be my generation's Kinks, then...what more do you need to add?
it seems like this was transferred -from- extremely low resolution digital to an analogue medium and then -back- to digital.. (there are big pixels but they aren't perfectly square)...
at any rate, i love this song, and it's weird to think how much i'd pay to see this in proper quality!
kudos for uploading it, no matter what the quality
@goodysun Don't want to sound like a smart arse, but the comment from sergentrock was posted 1 year earlier than the comment from sppong24, so it's not possible for him/her to be calling sppong a plonker........It's too late, i already do sound like a smart arse..sorry ; )
This was the first XTC song I ever heard, and I bloody love it! As soon as a heard that keyboard solo and that drumming I knew I was onto a good thing with this band.
There are songs by XTC that are TOTALLY BRILLIANT. However there are some songs that totally suck.
Droneing and flatline. Towers Of London being an example. Parts of it are good but it has a dragging quality to it. Also a lot of Nonsuch to me is flat line. Apple Venus is good but Wasp Star seems like the outtakes from Apple Venus. It seems that they release some sub standard stuff too like most bands.
Aahh i have to admit that Nonsuch and Wasp Star are perhaps my 2 favourite XTC albums.. apart from Oranges and Lemons! As much as their energy does it for me in their earlier stuff, i really think they (mainly Andy) improved as time went on!
Love the manic intensity of Andy's solo and how well it's integrated into the song. Love XTC. Chambers was an innovative powerhouse. I'll never forget his drumming.
Brilliant band, great lyrics. First saw them on a kids show around 1978 doing Science Friction, Magpie I think, and just got blown away, wish I could find that clip.
They play this on VH-1 classic from time to time. Great song!

The two brief solos: Barry First and Andy second, are brief telegrams of musical genius.
3-D EP electrified my brother and I when we got our mitts on it back when it first came out. The rest is HISTORY.

I only wish the video was clearer. This is about the best jam I have ever heard. If you don't like it, then may I suggest you complain to mother.

Here's XTC nearing their peak before that insufferable loser Andy Partrige forced out Barry Andrews.
By the time Andy forced out Terry, XTC began their long drop into crap.
Sir Richard Branson was right! He made these guys and he unmade them after loser Andy broke his word on a contract.
