I did a search for "she gently put a finger on his lips, embraced him like an animal" lyrics I last heard in the mid 80's, the search result led me to this. well well
Fantastic! I have never EVER seen this video to one of my favourite tunes - and I would have expected a bus station, not a barge with books on it and an amphibious Vauxhall Victor.
One of the saddest and most beautiful songs ever - I almost posted some of the lyrics this evening, and didn't.
What is up with the 40's/early 50's song in the beginning? Funny thing is, I used to live near a shopping village in Chicago built around that time. Then it was redone in the early 80's when this song was made. Guess what never changed? The escalator technology! Timeless huh...
even I look good without makeup - no male powder rooms please! It was a beast trying to touch up your mascara in the mens bog in the early eighties......... you usually came out with too much around your eye....
@terentii your in danger of your daughter to call you sad, what with young modern music is now like. It has seriously moved on. That is what my daughter has told me about my musical choices to her, and her latest boyfriend...
@yippitydodah Oh, I assure you, not only does my daughter have good taste (she loves listening to classical music), she also has a great sense of humor and love of the offbeat. Her cultural horizons go back 'way beyond 1990 (and she was born in '95) . This is exactly the kind of song that would appeal to her.
@terentii '95? Hmmm! Are you sure she isn't humouring you? Mine is a '91 model of a daughter, with now blonde hair, but as she always had, like me. Boys will kick in soon, or whatever, classic music parties even, like Rock your Box, and tings....
I worked on the radio in Moscow in the 1990s, at one of Russia's first commercial FM stations; back then, we broadcast rock 'n' roll 24/7 entirely in English. The DJ played this one evening, and I fell in love with it. ("Old?" I was thirty-something at the time.) I liked it so much that when one of our listeners wanted to dedicate a song to us, I requested this one. Afterward, it enjoyed something of a revival, with people calling in to request it on a regular basis.
the human league still sound as cool and ironic as they ever did...only the pet shop boys can match their timeless capacity for clever, effortless, melodic englishness.
No matter how many times I see this video (and I love this song) Phil on that boat reminds me of Disneyland Cast Members who run the Jungle Cruise. I am always waiting for him to stop and crack a joke about the hippo. The fact that he isn't wearing makeup and gained all that weight starting to look more healthy doesn't help. When I first saw this, I couldn't believe this was the same man as the man in "Don't You Want Me". Still, its a beautiful song that puts me in tears.
Phil Oakey is uber cool, awesome. Love this song, bought it on 12" years ago ! I think it came with a poster. The Human League were simply sublime and such a cool band.
I'd love to sing this, but none of the main araoke companies seem interested in replicating the track, - anybody out there have an instrumental version I could add lyrics to?
i showed this to some people my age some liked it and some said "omg thats old ppl music!" well im 13 and goddd i love human league and the phil the leader.. is that wrong? i cant stopp listening to it i love it with a strong passion lol!
@tinkerbellys Hey, it's not only normal, it actually means you have at least some taste compared to the majority of kids today! It's not really old music, i mean the 80s were just 30 years ago, sure it's been out-dated but still, a lot of this music is better than present day pop trash we're all used to!
@tinkerbellys This song has always had a strong like/dislike issue with people since it came out. I love this song (and all of Hysteria for that matter) and had some friends who considered me a traitor to my synthpop roots for it.
@tinkerbellys don't worry, there's nothing wrong with that. when I was 11 years old (back in the 90's), I never listened to the spice girls, britney spears, christina aguilera, and boybands. I only listened to the Human League, Heaven 17, Culture Club, and other 80s brit pop. Coz let's admit that music in the 80s (especially the british ones) was a hundred percent soooo much better than music nowadays.
I was in high school when this video came out on MTV!! MTV was much better in the 80's! The 90's for MTV was Rap(Hip hop) which I hate!! Human League is one of my

I love this song very much !! Phil Oakey has a great voice. One of Sheffield's finest along with Def Leppard, Joe Cocker,Pulp, ABC, Heaven 17 ,Artic Monkeys.
I heard this on the Radcliffe and Maconie show tonight for the first time. I would never have considered myself in any way, shape or form being an admirer of the Human League or any of that genre but this is a brilliant song.

They should build a statue of Oakey on the same scale as the colossus of Rhodes in Sheffield. Straddling the River Don of course.

A song to dream away. Robbie made a very good cover of this song (on "Rudebox"). He is a great fan of the 80's, like me.

Brilliant song!
It is a song we can all relate to when meeting an old flame and the awkwardness that comes with it.
