You know what I think would've made this title better? If they brought back the game with wii graphics, took out the sound effects and add music for soundtrack, throw a little wi-fi in with ghosts, and a bonus video with like behind the scenes stuff + a documentary. That would be worth buying.
I think they should of done a lot better for a 25th anniversary to one of the most iconic characters in video games. They could of added in Super Mario World 1 and 2, Super Mario RPG(One of the best RPGs ever made!), Super Mario 64, and many other Mario classics. I never thought Nintendo would make a terrible mistake by making a half asked package. What they did was the equivalent of burning an emulator copy to a blank disk. You are actually better off downloading an emulator in the first place!
If they had included the e reader exclusive content from super mario advance 4 in super mario bros 3 or an unlockable super mario advance mode for super mario bros 2 for beating it once, I would have bought this heck could have at least put in the gba version of mario bros
what the hell, these are the origanil games with better 16 bit graphics.atleast there the awesome games from the good old days.this game should at leats get a 9.5.these games are awesome.
best games ever. if ign thinks this is worth a 7.0,then they can jump off the fucking empire state building.
@CrystalSnake100 nope this deserves a 6, a 7 is pretty generous. You should jump off the bridge.
This game is truly lackluster and lazy, mario all stars already came out years ago on the snes WITH super mario world, and then we get this. This should have been a VC release if they weren't going to put in any effort in changing anything, or even adding more games on a DVD which can hold way more than just a few snes games.
@CrystalSnake100 you want a 9.5 for a SNES game? that is a SNES game, its not even a remake, its the actual game. 7 was actually pretty high. IMO i would give this game a 5
@xxxxJizzyxxxx its because what youre looking at is a straight port of the super nintendo all stars which is basically 4 super nintendo remakes of 4 NES games that have been re-released over and over again. They didnt include anything new and they couldnt even be bothered to update the controller directions ... Yet they can bothered to charge you full price.
Thats why this game only got a 7, which is pretty generous all things considered.
fuck ign they call this game not worth the money but they can clearly go and play call of duty over and over and over again i mean they have the nerve to say nintendo didnt give more to its mario fans but call of duty is the same fuckin game every year its like madden except madden changes somewhat but at least its a change cod is always been the same fuck u IGNorant fag fans of COD

I love the Mario series like no other. But sadly I agree with this review. If I wanted to play this I would have just started up my old SNES, which is still functional! :D
But It would have been nice to see a graphical enhancement like we saw in NSMBW and maybe with a few more extras. It's not bad, I mean, these are Mario's finest, but it could have been SOOO much better.
you know what else is a shame? this guy knows absolutely nothing about mario. the lost levels is actually japan's super mario bros 2 and our super mario bros 2 is a reskin of some weird ass japanese game that the name is escaping me. He also never even mentioned that there was a version on snes that included super mario world. and you call yourself a mario fan
@gabby632 If that was the case it'd get a lower score considering it's a straight port of a freaking SNES compilation with sloppy presentation (well, today it's sloppy. They could have re-done the menus at least).
I could easy buy all 4 NES games for $20 on the virtual console, so why would I get this? This port shows itself as a real lack of effort. It would have been really refreshing to see at least SOME kind of update to the original collection. I guess the 25th anniversary of Mario mustn't have been a big deal to Nintendo.
@wheeee33737 I don't see what's wrong, it's clearly marketed as having the same content as the original SNES game. Although it would be kinda cool to see it and Super Mario World released with updated Wii or Wii-U graphics.
@animationdude56 they didn't even UPDATE THE MENU! IT STILL SHOWS A SNES CONTROLLER FOR THE BUTTON CONFIG INSIDE THE GAME! This game clearly isn't worth the purchase, doesn't even come with super mario world like it's supposed to.
@windkai Like I said, it has excactly the same content as the original SNES cartridge, which includes the menus. Besides, if it had been released with an updated menu, people would complain about it having wii remote instructions, wouldn't they? And as Super Mario World is already on the Virtual Console, it'd be a little bit of a rip-off to have it on the disc. And it is worth the purchase. Remember it comes with a music and sound effects CD too, so you're not just paying for the game!!
@animationdude56 nope people wouldn't be complaining if THEY PROPERLY CHANGED THE MENU TO THE APPROPRIATE CONTROLLER, WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? And all of these games have been already released technically on the virtual console lol and why would anyone get excited about a cd that has sound effects? Are you nuts?
On the snes, there has been a release of Super mario All stars with Super mario world in it, to pay almost full price for this is an insult to long time mario fans.
@windkai Well, it's not like everyones gonna have their very own SNES, are they? And so what if they've technically already been released on the virtual console? These have better 16-bit graphics and a save feature, which is a relief when playing Super Mario Bros. 3. And tyhe thing about the CD is that you are paying for the CD as well, which most people will probably ignore as they've probably only bought it for the game. But I quite like music and sound effects CD's.
The 1st Top Comment doesn't surprise me. They actually sold Super Mario World on Virtual Console to many, great for Nintendo for not doing the "rip-off".
I can see the others complaining about SMW because they want the other version but also to get it for Free instead of VC due to no changes besides Luigi Sprites.
After almost about a Year till it got Released, still great to own it. The other Top Comment makes sense.
The Soundtrack was bittersweet, the only good thing about my copy is that I got it from a Nintendo of America Employee. I also got it for nostalgic value and to show my nephews when they get older.
You know, the disk would fit alot of games than those 16 bit games, why not Super Mario 64? Super Mario World? Super Mario Sunshine? Why didn't they put in those games in with All Stars. I mean Nintendo Power that covered this game had more history in it than that edition.
Nintendo has the fucking nerve to demand ~$50+ US dollars for this worthless shit, when the original SNES cartridge and SNES console can both be purchased off of ebay for cheaper, shipped!
Yeah...just get the Virtual Console version or emulate it instead.
@catholicgamer99 right. still was free. this set doesn't give anything worthwhile to the people who have been with it since then. which is the people who most care about this 25th anniversary in the first place.
@catholicgamer99 well thats all good for them. nintendo still should have done more for the veteran players who grew up with it. because i had been I was really excited to see what they were going to do to celebrate 25 years of mario. to me this whole catering to newcomers alienates the long time fans.
This is *exactly* the same thing as if you just purchased the (much cheaper) SNES version from Virtual Console. THAT is why he's saying it isn't worth the asking price.
If you sell a 'boxed' game, especially something that features the primary mascot of your platform responsible for SELLING your lackluster consoles (GameCube anyone?) and its a 25th anniversary, pretty huge.
Nope, not for the Big N. They don't give a fuck about any of you fans. >_>
no problems with the controls in fact no probleks at all and you complainin they didnt change anything if it aint broke dont fix it im a hardcore sonic fan and even i can see this game derserves at least a 9.0
@rikudoubapeck They aren't criticizing the games. They have a problem with the fact that Nintendo put almost no effort into this. The Wii disc can hold more than 4 NES games, they could have included Super Mario World an Super Mario 64 at least. The booklet doesn't really cover anything. The game is basically a copy and paste of the SNES version on a disc. No menu, copyright or graphics update. 7/10 is pretty generous for this.
@rikudoubapeck he wasn't even complaining about controls, they were complaining about how a nearly 20 year old game was presented again. They could have at least updated the menu, or even add in super mario world like they originally did. Hey maybe at least update the graphics and sounds a bit while retaining the same controls. But nintendo didn't do nothing, might as well emulate it to get the proper content, or pop in your snes game.
@rikudoubapeck For the Super Nintendo, there was also "Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World". That's hardly too much to ask for, I think. And like this review mentioned, no polish. Is it really too much to ask to make the onscreen instructions point to the Wii controller instead of the SNES controller?
I think you being a "hardcore sonic fan" is why you don't see how much of a ripoff this is.
@rikudoubapeck the problem wasnt with controls, the problem was that they couldnt even be bothered to change the directions from the super nintendo edition. Plus the fact that all they've done is port over the original which is 4 super nintendo remakes of 4 NES games rather than adding in any of the awesome games that have come out since then means this thing is lucky to get a 7 at all.
Its lazy, its sloppy and the extras are rubbish and yet they charge you for it. Rip off.
@cookieraider126 Super Mario Galaxy or Mario Kart Wii would probably take up almost the entire disc. xD
But yes, they could've included 64 or World. I mean, the whole point is to celebrate Mario's 25th anniversary, so why ONLY include the games on the oldest system?
@raffa0001 IGN- Games that got perfect scores: Super Mario Galaxy 2, GTA IV, Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Chrono Trigger. They've never given COD GOTY awards, none of the COD games are in their Hall of Fame and none have of them got 10s. So how are they IGNorant COD fans?
@raffa0001 Everything he said about the All-Stars re-release was true. Nothing changed and the extras were lame. And yes I own a copy and agree with the review. Halbmond's comment on this video shows what Nintendo should have done but they made a cheap cash in instead.
I was so pissed when I heard that Super Mario All-Stars was coming out for Wii, people kept saying it was for VC and not an anniversary Wii game. So when I heard it was 50 bucks I was mad. I couldn't wait to pick up 4 great nes games on VC for only 8 bucks.
@MikePDaTruth The soundtrack CD consists of 10 songs, 1 from each of Mario's adventures. The other 10 on the CD are literally sound effects like getting a coin or jumping. The art booklet is sort of cool, but it really could have been more detailed. I bought this and it was so bad, I put it in my Wii only once.
@MikePDaTruth It's the fact that it's just a lazy port, and if you consider yourself a Mario fan at all you already have these games. They may be amazing games, but outside of the CD and art booklet you are getting NOTHING new, which makes this release borderline shameful.
As someone who does not like IGN and thinks they are incredibly biased and unfair in a majority of their reviews, there was not a SINGLE false thing said in this video.
@Neocasko Well one that I thought was really the best was Sonic The Hedgehog 2, with Miles "Tails" in it. There was so much skill required for beating that game. Plus what I fell in love with that game is the amount of paths you can take in the game, it was not so...boring :)
@Phillakied I love Sonic 2! :-D I personally think it's better than many older Mario games (I await hate-mail for that XD ). Well speaking of Sonic. Sonic Generations is beating this joke of a rerelease to the ground ( I also await hate-mail for that). LOL
@Neocasko Sonic Generations is going to be giving stuff for the old fans and something new for the new fans. I will be counting the days when that game comes out due to the fact that there is going to be 2 Sonic's, 2 Tails, Robo-Eggman and Robot-Sonic (forgot his name), which altogether will make this game AMAZING
@Neocasko lol Thanks. A lot of fans are getting pumped for this game cause old fans got something (2D Sonic) and new ones got something too (3D Sonic) and I think thats what is going to make it a must buy.
@sonicadx They think it's a lazy re-rerelease which it is. The compilation itself is great but it should have been for Virtual Console or maybe even DS. But not just slapped on a Wii disc. It's redundant.
I remember being kinda upset because I had JUST found out this as coming out right after paying about 70 bucks on a SNES and a copy of the original All-Stars
Oh wow, I was feeling really upset set about not getting this game, but when I found out the that this is was just a port of the original SNES game, that dissapointment quickly faded.
I already have the original game for the Super Nintendo. So there is almost no point in me getting this right away after all, except for collectors sake. In fact was just playing this on my SNES a few weeks ago. So I can deal with not having the extras for a while.
I agree that the set itself could've had much more, and that the game itself should've had more to it, but as for the games themselves, Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, 3, and the Lost Levels are amazing.
wow ive never seen anybody slam a mario game like that. ANY mario fan would be very appreciative to obtain those extras. Plus some people dont even own the SNES so this would be great. and you didnt even mention the price. its 30$ oppossed to the normal wii game being 50$. Disliked.
Big deal, you save a whole $5 than buying it off virtual console. Whoop de doo.
There is no reason why it should not have included ALL the Mario games up to atleast Sunshine including the gameboy titles. The so called extras is what a lousy soundtrack, which is LOUSY, and the booklet which has next to no substance.
And the SNES crap is out, it's not hard to run emulators on pretty much anything from Nintendo DS to PSP, to even ipods, ipads, tablets and stuff. It's shit deal with it.
@droidette Super Mario All-Stars should have been on VC, not slapped on a Wii disc with a few petty extras. IGN is right. This is a wasted opportunity. There could have been so much more on the disc itself too.
You know what Nintendo should've did? Instead of just slapping the same original from the SNES to the Wii, they should've re-did the graffics and everything else, almost like the graffics seen in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, that way you can somehow feel a difference and some joy into seeing the old worlds from the past mario games from the 80s, as of how games are now. But Super Mario games are astounding, no matter what type graffics they are.
ign, you officailly suck, i hate you for bashing sonic 4, but you just gave Super Mario Allstars......a SEVEN. You gave 4 of the best games in history.. a SEVEN. seriosly you can bash sonic, but when u bash mario, you're messed up in the head, you went too far this time IGN
@Blitzwing989 Lol. He's reviewing the package and how they ported it. It got a 7 because they didn't add anything at all, and it's a lazy port. He's not bashing the games themselves.
ok i know that these are really good games but all they did was port an snes game on disc. this isnt worth 30 dollars more like 10 dollars. plus i like the origional nes versions better. this would have been really good if it had the 4 nes games(in thier origional form) mario world, mario 64, and super mario sunshine. and cool extras. otherwise this is shit for the value. get them on virtual console instead!!!!
I actually agree with IGN on this one... for once. I bet this didn't take anytime at all to make, comparatively speaking to most retail games. They should have just made this a special wiiware title.
Yes, it would've been nice to get the graphics updated up to par with today's standards but I'm definitely okay with just 16-bit graphics. However, I can't help but feel that this was just thrown together with minimal effort.
agreed, they could have done so much more. like eh...what about a 3d look to the 8 bit worlds? or Super Mario World added? even Kart? interviews and behind the scenes could have been great extras and perhaps even a level builder?
its a nice collection to have but could indeed be so much more.
You know what I think would've made this title better? If they brought back the game with wii graphics, took out the sound effects and add music for soundtrack, throw a little wi-fi in with ghosts, and a bonus video with like behind the scenes stuff + a documentary. That would be worth buying.

3) Buying all 4 games on the VC would cost $23 total.
4) The VC versions are buggy & have terrible graphics compared to the Limited Edition.
5) I'm pretty sure that getting both an SNES cartridge & console would actually be MORE expensive.
6) Limited Edition also comes with a few extras (as mediocre as they are).

The Wii disc can hold more than 4 NES games, they could have included Super Mario World an Super Mario 64 at least. The booklet doesn't really cover anything. The game is basically a copy and paste of the SNES version on a disc. No menu, copyright or graphics update. 7/10 is pretty generous for this.
scyther206 2 months ago 11
@rikudoubapeck the controls fail because the menu update doesn't even present the RIGHT CONTROLLER! THEY COULD HAVE AT LEAST SHOWN A DAMN WII MOTE!
windkai 2 months ago
@rikudoubapeck he wasn't even complaining about controls, they were complaining about how a nearly 20 year old game was presented again. They could have at least updated the menu, or even add in super mario world like they originally did. Hey maybe at least update the graphics and sounds a bit while retaining the same controls. But nintendo didn't do nothing, might as well emulate it to get the proper content, or pop in your snes game.
windkai 2 months ago
@rikudoubapeck U MAD BRO???
ronackostolomac 1 month ago
@rikudoubapeck For the Super Nintendo, there was also "Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World". That's hardly too much to ask for, I think. And like this review mentioned, no polish. Is it really too much to ask to make the onscreen instructions point to the Wii controller instead of the SNES controller?
I think you being a "hardcore sonic fan" is why you don't see how much of a ripoff this is.
onpon4 3 weeks ago
@onpon4 Not forgetting Super Mario World 2 : Yoshi's Island (Bloody amazing game)
benking18 3 weeks ago
@rikudoubapeck the problem wasnt with controls, the problem was that they couldnt even be bothered to change the directions from the super nintendo edition. Plus the fact that all they've done is port over the original which is 4 super nintendo remakes of 4 NES games rather than adding in any of the awesome games that have come out since then means this thing is lucky to get a 7 at all.
Its lazy, its sloppy and the extras are rubbish and yet they charge you for it. Rip off.
PhilosopherGaming 2 weeks ago
what would have been cool is if they let you have the choice to change the graphics like the halo 10th anniversary game.

agree that the games are old and is a lackluster port imo they should have added
+super mario galaxy
+super mario 64
+mario kart wii
remastered in hd or something maybe wii can't take it :P
cookieraider126 4 months ago
@cookieraider126 well i think the wii can take it but im not sure BUT WHEN THE Wii U comes out it takes full hd . 1080p.
solarsonic101 3 months ago
@cookieraider126 Super Mario Galaxy or Mario Kart Wii would probably take up almost the entire disc. xD
But yes, they could've included 64 or World. I mean, the whole point is to celebrate Mario's 25th anniversary, so why ONLY include the games on the oldest system?
catholicgamer99 2 months ago
No super mario world? FUCK THAT!
1337Gameplayer 4 months ago 31
@1337Gameplayer I think that they easily could've included it. A Wii disc can hold WAY more data than this.

@1337Gameplayer Super Mario All-Stars never included Super Mario World. Why would the anniversary re-release be any different?

@daftintendo There was a version, bundled with the SNES, that contained Super Mario World (in addition to the others).

raffa0001 5 months ago
@raffa0001 IGN- Games that got perfect scores: Super Mario Galaxy 2, GTA IV, Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Chrono Trigger. They've never given COD GOTY awards, none of the COD games are in their Hall of Fame and none have of them got 10s. So how are they IGNorant COD fans?
scyther206 5 months ago
@scyther206 giving super mario all stars a miserable 7... enough?
raffa0001 5 months ago
@raffa0001 Everything he said about the All-Stars re-release was true. Nothing changed and the extras were lame. And yes I own a copy and agree with the review. Halbmond's comment on this video shows what Nintendo should have done but they made a cheap cash in instead.
scyther206 5 months ago
Honestly, who cares? The mario games are timeless fun. No matter what year they come out, it'll be fun to play either way

PSspecialist 6 months ago
You're getting four of the greatest, most influential games of all time, PLUS a soundtrack CD, PLUS an art booklet. Final score: 7.0/10. Huh?
To quote another post I read on YouTube: "Can't spell ignorant without IGN."
MikePDaTruth 6 months ago
@MikePDaTruth The soundtrack CD consists of 10 songs, 1 from each of Mario's adventures. The other 10 on the CD are literally sound effects like getting a coin or jumping. The art booklet is sort of cool, but it really could have been more detailed. I bought this and it was so bad, I put it in my Wii only once.
JaredRandomness 6 months ago
@MikePDaTruth It's the fact that it's just a lazy port, and if you consider yourself a Mario fan at all you already have these games. They may be amazing games, but outside of the CD and art booklet you are getting NOTHING new, which makes this release borderline shameful.
As someone who does not like IGN and thinks they are incredibly biased and unfair in a majority of their reviews, there was not a SINGLE false thing said in this video.

Phillakied 6 months ago
@Phillakied Which game? I love the Sonic series but which game are you referring to?
Neocasko 6 months ago
@Neocasko Well one that I thought was really the best was Sonic The Hedgehog 2, with Miles "Tails" in it. There was so much skill required for beating that game. Plus what I fell in love with that game is the amount of paths you can take in the game, it was not so...boring :)
Phillakied 6 months ago
@Phillakied I love Sonic 2! :-D I personally think it's better than many older Mario games (I await hate-mail for that XD ). Well speaking of Sonic. Sonic Generations is beating this joke of a rerelease to the ground ( I also await hate-mail for that). LOL
Neocasko 6 months ago
@Neocasko Sonic Generations is going to be giving stuff for the old fans and something new for the new fans. I will be counting the days when that game comes out due to the fact that there is going to be 2 Sonic's, 2 Tails, Robo-Eggman and Robot-Sonic (forgot his name), which altogether will make this game AMAZING
Phillakied 6 months ago
@Phillakied Exactly my thoughts I can't wait till the game comes out! :-D
And "Robot-Sonic" is called "Metal Sonic" BTW.
Neocasko 6 months ago
@Neocasko lol Thanks. A lot of fans are getting pumped for this game cause old fans got something (2D Sonic) and new ones got something too (3D Sonic) and I think thats what is going to make it a must buy.

@sonicadx They think it's a lazy re-rerelease which it is. The compilation itself is great but it should have been for Virtual Console or maybe even DS. But not just slapped on a Wii disc. It's redundant.

DarkRetroFan64 6 months ago
Oh wow, I was feeling really upset set about not getting this game, but when I found out the that this is was just a port of the original SNES game, that dissapointment quickly faded.
I already have the original game for the Super Nintendo. So there is almost no point in me getting this right away after all, except for collectors sake. In fact was just playing this on my SNES a few weeks ago. So I can deal with not having the extras for a while.

wow ive never seen anybody slam a mario game like that. ANY mario fan would be very appreciative to obtain those extras. Plus some people dont even own the SNES so this would be great. and you didnt even mention the price. its 30$ oppossed to the normal wii game being 50$. Disliked.
droidette 7 months ago
@droidette
It's shit deal with it.
snake2006 7 months ago
@droidette Super Mario All-Stars should have been on VC, not slapped on a Wii disc with a few petty extras. IGN is right. This is a wasted opportunity. There could have been so much more on the disc itself too.

angls186 7 months ago
You know what Nintendo should've did? Instead of just slapping the same original from the SNES to the Wii, they should've re-did the graffics and everything else, almost like the graffics seen in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, that way you can somehow feel a difference and some joy into seeing the old worlds from the past mario games from the 80s, as of how games are now. But Super Mario games are astounding, no matter what type graffics they are.

This was Marios 25th birthday for crying out loud! In my opinion a 25th Anniversary Collection should look something like this:
• Mario All-Stars featuring higher-resolution sprites, updated info panels for Wii controls, and maybe Wii-exclusive bonus stages
• Mario World featuring higher-resolution sprites, updated info panels
• Mario 64 with higher resolution
• ALL classic Game Boy titles
Mario gets 25 only once!
