they thought it was just the alarm going off again(as it had been the previous few weeks with the renovations) and weren't bothered moving even when everyone else was leaving. then one of the canteen girls came over and was like yea its actually a fire lads

Heard it was a gas leak, ironically they were extending and renovating the canteen... um, then it burned down! Le whoops! Everyone was in a panic though, stupid 5th and 6th years kids getting overenthusiastic with their camera phones though... Eejits.

Saw it myself. The fire was far from small! When the oil tank behind the kitchen blew up, the flames reached about 40 feet high and the roof tiles started exploding. I can't believe it... So many happy memories sitting in the canteen with my friends as an undergrad... RIP canteen, indeed!

Apparently the fire started when the builders were working with a fire torch and some felt inside the roof above the kitchen.
