I am reading this book for my AP Language and Composition class. Thank you for helping me understand what was going on in the, as Harold Bloom puts it, "hopelessly obscure" text. Now I must decide what thesis to utilize, however, the only ones I can think of are large themes that are too broad. Any suggestions?
@meowkatzz Right!! I had to read this for my University course, and I must admit I didn't enjoy it at all! Reading it was like walking through heavy mud. This may sound sexist, but as a female, this strikes me as a tale Men would enjoy more. If I'm not mistaken Apocolypse Now was somewhat based on this book. Sorry, but I prefer Jane Austen.
I wish I saw this 5 years ago... to this day I don't know what this book was about... it was agony reading this, I couldn't absorb anything and I LIKE reading.
@CH0Plogic Or maybe his knee? Such mysteries much we delve into time after time; even after the most sincere of events have passed can we not take for granted that which we have seen. I getcha: one must never be sure!
There are actually 30 cannibals. "Why in the name of all the gnawing devils of hunger they didn't go for us -- they were thirty to five -- and have a good tuck-in for once, amazes me now when I think of it." The number 20 comes from a part of the book where 20 of the 30 cannibals get out and push the boat. Sparknotes are a good addition to reading a book, but should not be used in place of actually reading.
The future idiots of America will be squawking: "Heart of Darkness is about Imperialism," as if anyone who takes literature seriously would ever say such a thing.
@JohnACorp782 i don't mean it that way...okay wrong choice of words....i like a more action type or supernatural book....it felt to mellow for me and i feel like the climax did nothing for me....love the style and detail though, interesting over all
@MrUnitedAnimations I understand. It's a change for me too to read something with more action and where the story moves faster from time to time. Someone should write a book version of Apocalypse now as well, even though it's based on this.
THIS IS FUCKING GAY ALL NIGGERS SHOULD BE ELECTROCUTED AND HUNG AND DECAPITATED AND URINATED ON. BEANERS ARE LOWER THAN DIRT. CRACKERS FOR THE WIN. WHITE PEOPLE RUN THIS PLANET. ASIANS ARE OKAY SOMETIMES IF THEY ARE NOT NARUTO FANS. FUCK SHIT ASS TITTIES.
this is really helpful. the only thing that would make it more helpful would be a note of what page/segment of the book one can find the information on. otherwise, thanks!
I found this summary really helpful to watch before reading the text. The illustrations gave me something to visualize and reference while reading. Thanks!

Before we meet Marlow, isn't there and un named "narrator"?
musikgal17 1 month ago
@musikgal17 Yeah, that's the overall narrator of the book. Marlow's narration of his story just takes up the majority of the book.

I can draw a parallel between Kurtz and a Portuguese priest named Padre Cicero.
Kurtz came to the Congo's to bring civilization to the natives, but over time, his ambition took hold and he became a tyrant.
Cicero became a priest and sought to teach the word of God to others. But he soon began to believe that he himself was God.

Why do critics bother arguing if it's racist or not? Of course it is! A large part of what Marlowe observes can be simply summed up to culture shock.

@MrUnitedAnimations Boring? I didn't find it boring at all. True that the story was very slowpaced but it had a great psychological edge as well.
