When one is exposed to something so frequently, it becomes acceptable. When you are told that something is ok by someone you respect, you often won't question it. This is not a 'reason' for excision, and it's not true, obviously. But it is an argument put forward for FGM (by men!) in countries where it is practiced.

FGM is illegal in the UK, which contains nationals from all 28 of these countries. So do we enforce the law? No. We have a policy of winning "hearts and minds". Why? Because we're terrified of being viewed as "intolerant" of other people's cultures and fucked-up traditions.

@cafelattemocha It is not just 'for the men'. Muhammed refers to it in the quran (type 1 or 2 anyways) and women want their daughters to have it done to them 'to keep them calm'!! It is so much of a tradition, cultural & religious thing that SOME women accept it which I think is the worst part of it all. It is truly disgusting and abhorrent. I completely agree - I can't understand that part of it either - if s religious person does this to themselves aren't they questioning God's work in some way? @cafelattemocha There are 4 different types of FGM. The 3rd removes everything that's on the outside- it's disgusting & sick & wrong what they do. The first 2 remove less (but are no better than type 3) & in the quran muhammed apparently says a quote that relates to FGM saying something like 'don't cut too much off because it is better for the woman & the man' so it sounds like he was referring to type 1 or 2 & not 3.
