And THIS is all the proof anyone needs that this amazing woman should have received her first Grammy 30+ years ago, as well as her Lifetime Achievement Award now in 2012.
Ga-ga...who? Katy Perry who? Beyonce who?...MIss DIANA ROSS is the truth, and she just took you "want-a-be's" to school on what a REAL concert looks like. LOL!!! Peace to all.
@honey200410 current divas fly around arenas on ropes. beyonce, pink, britney, katie have all done it. maybe rhianna has too..oh that's right she's too busy showing us her private parts. diana was brilliant and a trailblazer.
Looks like this show is going to finally get its legal release on DVD on October 3rd. It's been set for release before but never happened, so fingers crossed this time! It'll be a huge seller and anyone who's never seen it, grab a copy, you won't be disappointed!!
Possibly dated to coincide with the release in October (IF release dates are correct...it keeps changing!) of the Diana Ross & The Supremes 50th Anniversary (1961-69) set.
@TheReturnOfStephan1 I'm not sure about the details as yet. It's just listed on our supplier's release sheet & I'm not 100% sure about this, but it looks like it MIGHT only be a UK release. For obvious reasons I cant post our company, but I just looked on AmazonUK and it's on there as a pre-release....and I'm sure it'll be available thru eBay too!
I have a pretty poor bootleg of the DVD which has been widely available for some years, so I'm guessing that the new release has got to be better quality
@TheReturnOfStephan1 Yeah I believe the DVD I have was also taken from tapes (I got my copy from eBay) We only deal in official, legal releases so it wouldn't be on our suppliers release sheets if it wasn't the real deal. I'm off to work now. If I can find anything out I'll post it on here straight away.
@ParaFacSub ,It's been released forever in Japan. Diana has a huge draw there. I have the Jap release of this disc. And luckily there are no jap subtitles.
@SpazChat Yes, but it's never had a UK release before, although it's been available on bootleg over here for many years. The quality was never brilliant though. It's now had its release here and is selling very well considering it's not been advertised. My parents sell this kind of thing and they tell me they've shipped out quite a few copies already.
@TheReturnOfStephan1 Stephan i got my tickets to see Diana at the Fox in Atlanta March 1st. they are going fast but I got MINE LoL and I am ready for the Boss
RIP Nick..this song will keep Diana immortal forever..and since you wrote it everytime she sings it from now on..we will remember you..say hello to Michael and Moms while your up there
I truly think people FORGET that she was breaking new ground! These so called divas today (great as they may be) cannot hold a flame to the original glam artist, Ms. Ross!
this is my all time fav song, and nothing will beat it in all the 40 years since it 1st come out..1971. It is still my number 1 song. Long may it reign. Nothing beat it yet either. Number 1 for forty years. long live Diana Ross.
I saw a lot of concerts by many great artists, and I missed this one ( I was still in Taiwan ) All I have to say Miss Ross gave the most amazing opening of all the concerts I went. I truly wish I saw it in person.
she has to be the first musical artist who worked the camera for photos!!! that's all you see now with celebs on magazines all the time!!! THE ORIGINALLLLL...THE BOSS!
Saw the early version this show at the Fox Theater in Detroit in February 1979 (before "The Boss") when I was stationed in Oscoda, MI in the AF. Worth driving through a snowstorm to get there - saw an awe-inspiring entertainer at the top of her game & on her home turf, which she acknowledged frequently throughout the show, and when she surrendered the mike to Aretha during "Reach Out & Touch" we went ape-sh#$. Couldn't hear the jaw-dropping opening for the roar of the crowd - best show - EVER!
Everytime I see the close up of Miss Ross, her son Evan looks so much like her, the same eyes, nose, lips....and he's such a great actor just like his mom....
Of course she doesn't get credit, but this show was enormously influential too. It really raised the bar on stagecraft for R&B singers.
And the all-white set...the smoothness of the transitions....it wasn't until Madonna's Blond Ambition tour that anyone really came close to such masterful production.
There were other really good, really big shows, but none as smooth.
Whoah! I just looked at your uploads Stephan, Wow! I think I'll be spending a bit of time on your channel! You've got great musical taste in the 'diva category' I'm loving all of those vocalists! DANG! Awesome, I'm spoiled in cyberspace. :)
I've posted the entire concert in its own play list for uninterrupted viewing, or you can view it by clicking the following song in each clip's 'video responses' section.
Below each screen is a link where you can purchase the DVD.
Thanks for the post. This has to be ranked in the top 5 as one the greatest concerts of all time by any entertainer or singer. She is simply the best. The Best.
Many of them were by Bob Mackie, usually in a collaboration with Diana.
Mr. Aghayan used to work with Bob Mackie, beginning in the late 1960's, when both were assistants to Edith Head, Hollywood's most prolific costume designer, after Mackie came back to Hollywood, following his tenure in Paris as a sketch artist for Jean Louis, who created Marlene Dietrich's cabaret stage ensembles.
@nancydrew5 Bob & Ray worked together on "Lady Sings The Blues", too. Some fans can always spot which ensemble is Ray's because his tend to have more "soul" & better construction.:)
We all know that this opening and show is what makes legends. But has anyone checked out her openings on her latest tour? not bad for a 60 something, proving once agains she is the grandest of all.
I have to add - I have seen many dramatic/theatrical openings for great performers including Tina Turner, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Cher, Donna Summer, etc. After all these years, this is still the best. Bette & Cher have come close in a few of their openings, but I still get chills from this one.
Who's idea? Did Diana have input- must have. Most of you will remember the white sequined cap from the photo montage from Mahagony.
Im dating myself but this is one one the first VHS tapes I pruchased and still have..also the release of Visions of Diana Ross...including the duet with Julio Inglesias I think she looks incredible and a wonderfully produced video....Also the Movie Mahogany ...the montag e makes the movie I could watch it over and over...
@lilyofthevalley7 I have to agree. It's impossible not to get goose bumps when I watch that. The word superstar is used far too often these days. But Diana Ross is a legend for a reason.
I agree with all the comments. I saw this show in St Louis in 1979. It featured a 50 piece orchestra, dancers, laser light show and of course MISS ROSS!!!!!!!!! It was one of the most memorable concerts of my life. They don't entertain like this anymore. She sounded better live than her records. Truly a great moment in entertainment history. And the performance still stands the test of time!
I saw that same show in St Louis with my older brother! It was my first time seeing her live. The next day I was at my brothers' and "Touch Me In The Morning" came on the radio, and he got goose bumps thinking about her at the show the night before! It was a great show!!!!!
Man! This was a definitive moment for me in a DR concert. She proved she was the baddest of the bad here. Peerless. The only one who came close IMO was Dionne Warwick who came out on the satge sat on a stool and sang hits for 90 mins. The max and the least. My heart belongs to Diana!
I saw this show in Memphis 30 years ago (!) and nothing has ever come close to it, or ever will. The goosebumps and chills are just the same as they were then. "Class" is truly the operative word here. The lady has always had it and always will.
THE very BEST opening of ANY show i have EVER seen (an i seen QUITE a few an all!!) Without a shadow of a doubt this was/is Diane's best show she's EVER done!!She is in absolutely FLAWLESS vocal form and is in COMPLETE control of everything, from the very SECOND ya hear her voice (an she aint even come OUT yet too!!)She keeps everything moving along brilliantly, with seeming effortlessness and the CONCEPT of this show was/is incredible also (her bein delivered from the Heavens to perform for us!!)
I don't think Ross was ahead of her time, she just displayed more class than anyone else, something that goes over many entertainer's heads. They want to go on stage in tshirt and jeans and think that's cool
No Other Like Miss Ross....She is truly the Diva...A Legend...A National Treasure. Bravura!!!

Man did this woman know how to open a show, or what?!?!
Don't even bother trying to top that (Beyonce, et al.), it can't be done.
The only person who can top a Diana Ross entrance is Diana Ross, for anyone else to even try is useless.
