  • Cool....

  • whyd it stop!?

  • This is wonderfull, man o man..... you can see him having an internal metronome, his grunts keep time and he fills it with drumset......

  • Bernard is getting so old!

  • ill

  • oh yeah !

  • That "Aaaahhh" @1:31 was one of the many reasons I watched this video.

  • After that little speech about the "locomotion", he was perfectly in synch with the beat he was playing before it.

  • Bernard and hes sounds !!! :D

  • Purdielicious

  • At least let him hit it and quit.

  • He looks like a rainforest explorer haha. What a cool guy

  • See more of Bernard "Pretty" Purdie on SoulDrummers . com.

  • he's gotten older. he shows, when he used to SPLAIN.

  • waooo. amazing .

  • When it comes to a funky style, in the simplest form. THIS GUY IS THE KING. I agree with fpagliato. He is the King Of Feel!

  • if he had a thrid hand, he'd be wanking :)

  • @Purdie8 LOOOL

  • for my own sanity, put up the entire dvd, or at least what comes next

  • @ollietrix lol

  • You should put a link to the DVD in the video's description.....

  • I heard that Purdie played on some Beatle tracks??? Very funky timing.

  • @clarkewi yeah that's the rumor. He supposedly played on some tracks from Revolver. Personally i don't think one of the Beatles is playing drums on "She Said She Said". Just listen to the performance....

  • whhaaat theee fffffuck?!? i was enjoying reminiscing about thomas the tank engine and then a stupid drum solo interrupted my peace of mind?!? damn pissed me off now :(

  • WOO choo choo choo CHOO...Eh woo hoo hoo Shhhhuckachuckachickachuckachickachuckachickachuckachick!

  • Purdies groove is hypnotizing

  • Am i the only one that hears him grunting?

  • Just when he was about to get into the Purdie Shuffle........ Dang!

Man i would like to meet the guy someday. Hell of a drummer!

  • Bernard in the pocket tight thats what a drummer should be sometimes Id play with a drummer with all these fills but the pocket is where it is Bernard in the pocket 4 sho

  • WHY would you stop it there?! He was gonna get rippiiiinn XD much love and respect bernard

  • he even kept time while he stopped playing to speak ,

  • Must. Have. The. Rest. Of. This. Video

    Who agrees?

  • I love the way he's always singing the groove. Nobody enjoys to play drums more than this man.

  • @SheikTijl Happiest human being alive. Oh, and did I mention he's the best drummer alive today?

  • haha my loco-motion

  • MMM-MMM

  • GROOVE is KING.

  • does anybody know what hats he's playing? oh my god!!!!!!!!

  • Although I'm not a gay, I would go with him if he were to hit on me.

  • @mitsubishi777 honestly, drummers are the only ones going to be watching this video, and i must assume that you have some sort of rythym in your life if you are watching this, but to denote this man as a piece of ass for a funny joke in hopes for some thumbs up? shame. bernard is a legend.

  • @drummerfreako OK. You're right.

  • A pocket deeper than the Pacific

  • MAESTRO!!!!!!!!! INCREIBLE!!!! PURO FEELING!!!!

  • It's a shame he has no sense of rythm.

  • @sckvevrbdy lol

  • Holy... I dont even know what to say now...Purdie rocks all the way (and back xD)

  • Bernard Purdie is groove, personified...period.

  • See more about Mr. Purdie on SoulDrummers . com

  • He needs to learn how to groove.

  • he is amazing !!!!!!!!!!!! wow

  • Damn... so effortless, and absolutely perfect timing. He stops playing at 1:50 to talk and starts playing again at 2:10 and he's exactly in sync with his original beat. Like he's got a frickin' metronome in his head.

  • @addvali He does feel his groove, but I'm sure it's his left foot bouncing all the way through that is keeping him in time. I do this myself. I love the way he tells a story when he's instructing and his occasional "Ummmm ummmmm!" - no doubt he loves what he does

  • the locomotion, it's a train noise, that's brilliant ^^ the funk it's like train shuffle ^^ !!!

  • I love how no matter how techincal i...or any other drummer gets...simplicity and groove always come out superior....bernard,bonham,porcaro, and steve gadd's shuffle groove's have remained classics for years.

  • living legend

  • I cant imagine my drummer life without Bernard!!, what a drummer!!, thanks for all your drumming years Bernard!!!

  • that snare sounds so damn good

  • I met him one year ago here in Italy!!!!

Ahah I love him when talks and make strange sound during playing XD

  • i met him friday!!!!!!!!!!1 whooooo =DDDDD

  • he keeps timing even at 1:55 - 2:10 while talking....what a drummer

  • Okay, i know we're all teary-eyed listening to Purdie do his phenomenal thing, but my nephew (not a drummer) just told me it made no sense to him --" the guys just hitting things in time, and tons can do that." Ugh...

After attempts to explain feel, show Purdie & Gadd vids, and explaining how great feel drummers use their sticks to construct a spacious, roomy "temporal cloud" that the other band-members cozy on into... still made no sense to him. Bottom line: JUST CAN'T EXPLAIN GREATNESS!

  • @scottp118 You made the mistake of trying to explain it, you should have just splained it

  • I love Bernard Purdy. He's the grooviest drummer in the world, and has the best personality. Does anyone know why he has his rack toms set up that way though?

  • SUCH A COOOOOL MOFO!!

  • Still keeping time 1:55

  • This guy is just so awesome, wish I could have seen the whole video. Love the sound of his snare as well!

  • great great great thx for sharing

  • this guy can probably make even pouring a bowl of cereal groovy as heck

  • He makes me wanna take down my 7 piece to a 3 and start over!

  • Low-down, nasty and funky.

  • Purdie just makes me wanna cry... it's not frustration, it's not envy, it's not enlightment; i'm just happy, happy to witness you playing mr purdie.

  • Love it Mr Purdie!

  • How could anybody with any love for humanity cut this video off at that spot?!?!?!

  • @blackcow81 Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh! Now i know what you were talking about ! (wants more)

  • @blackcow81 lol... it hurt

  • grooooovy :D

  • Hypnotically brillant and groovy.

  • unpayable man

  • Love it when the cowbell sneaks in, when it's not supposed to.

  • good call..haha good song

  • bernard is so natural and expressive....the two greatest traits that any musician could ever hope to be gifted with...

  • He really knows how to enjoy himself! Mastergroover.

  • I love how, even as he tells the story, he uses the drums not only to teach and show the grooves he's talking about, but also as a kind of soundtrack to the story. The man ~lives~ his groove.

  • @christraven ow yea i agree, most drummers, even the world renowned ones play the drums as percussion, bernard plays them like a melody instrement, my favorite drummer ever.

  • Couldn't agree more. It's amazing.

  • Bernard is the king of feel.

  • Hey, guys. If you wanna hear some of his greatest work, check him out on ooh child by the five stair steps. Let me know what you think. Peace.

  • "And every now and then then cowbell sneaks in when it's not supposed to"... XD. This guy is awsome.

  • yes :)

  • bp is all about the vibe-which is sadly becoming a lost art form

  • The crowd clearly doesnt know how great of a drummer they are watching.

  • is this a basix kit???!!!

  • mapex

  • no this isn't a mapex kit

    it's a basix

  • That satisfied groan is soooo creepy. i love it XD

  • purdie is the shaman of drums. he has humour, intensity, relaxation, wisdom, utmost groove and rhythm, dream like quality..without drugs! wow. thanks for posting this.

  • @freqazoidiac He's smoother than Colt 45

  • such a great feeling. i love it *-*

  • it's not the same as you spending your entire afternoon on the grass trying to learn kickflips before you know how to carve and ollie. it's also not a sequenced sampler you are used to in your hip hop, which incidentally sampled most of purdie's back catalogue...you are blinded with ear muffs. he is also making it ULTRA basic for his audience, who are there to learn, and this means stripping away excess, which also lends to his skill and elegance. peace

  • give you the same set of drums, same pair of sticks and probably can't even get the cross stick to sound like that.

  • not impressive, listen and feel the groove you stupid.

  • can you groove the same he does?:)

  • Master drummer

  • man i wish i could get into it like he does

  • He plays ghosts with his fingers while he's playing crossstick. Whoooo

  • The master groove. Wow

  • the master groove is right, he is even speaking in time notice when he gives the loco motion example he comes back in on the down beat of the six bar perfectly with out missing the pulse

  • i can watch this dude for hours

  • Yeah! Puuurdie!!

  • this guy is hillarious!! Watch some of his other videos. He's also a very good drummer

  • he's not *hillarious*... he is god.

  • Where can I find, download or buy the entire video? this is awesome!!!

  • sweet jesus. so good.

  • Let me ask everyone something...When you listen to this killer groove, can you stay actually sit still?..I think I, like most other people with a SOUL have to bob a head or tap a foot or SOMETHING...That being said, whats with these prude douches in the audience looking bored as hell, not moving? haha

  • Simple: they're mesmerized! As I would be as well (and hopefully you, too)! :)

  • haha i hope you're right friend...

  • @yeagemk I can't. You are so right!

  • i know i was bobbing all the way through :P

  • I love how he played absolutely nothing, and it still sounds ridiculous. lol

  • Wow ! He done frig around . Straight to it .

  • Drum sound great.

"sometimes the cow bell sneeks in"

  • so damn pretty!!!

  • Purdie owns!!! psssht psssht, yeah :)

  • Best drummer ever, slick grooves are what it's all about. You can keep your stick tricks and super fast showing off 10 minute big band solos,.

  • @georgewhedge agreed the dudes the real deal!

  • His commentary is a part of the performance...great!

  • so true, man!

  • It's good to see Mr. Purdie still being added amongst the many great drummers on Youtube. Drummers don't realize how he influenced the rock greats like Porcaro (RIP) and Bonham (RIP) and a slew of others. A lot of the great drummers we idolize have most likely been influence by Mr. Purdie.

  • Yea its a shame he's so overlooked :(

  • Bernard's the man.... He's the definition of groove... He invented so many cool grooves...

If you notice he talks in time.....

  • Does anyone else think it's amazing how perfect he keeps his time even when he's merely talking, or "chugga-lugging" or whatever, and that he comes back in at 2:20 precisely where he should be? I find this astounding. This guy just FEELS it. That can't be taught; I don't care what anyone says!

  • i support exactly the same idea as you ... he just FEELS it ! ... Thats the talent ... fast breaks and blast beats can be taught ... this CANT be taught .... This guy is awesome ... i love his groovin ...

  • @scottp118 His timing an rhythm are impeccable. I don't think there's a drum video on you tube that sounds a great as the stuff Pretty does. Bernard's beat demands your body MOVE to them.

  • God of groove. Every video with him is a musical story.

  • i love the beginning, from as i am lol

  • i loooooove this man!!!!

  • that snare is orgasmic omg !

  • That was a big teaser it just left me with blue balls!!!

  • Yes indeed he is still alive. He is currently drumming in the musical HAIR on Broadway. He has his toms set up that way in the show as well.....I have seen a few guys do that, just to switch up the sound.....

  • is he still alive? hope so

  • Mounted toms seem misplaced.

  • That's Purdie style, more musical than traditional style

  • nah, some drummers like david jones do that to prevent repetitiveness after a while.

  • Yeah, seems weird to have the smallest in the middle.

  • lol if you find that boring stop druming. Cause you 99,9% of what makes a real drummer. You can do all the goofy fills you want if you just hit without any feeling, that's how you get totally boring for audience. And this Purdie has a huge sense of groove, just ear it.

  • Such a great sense of groove, Purdie is definitely one of my favourite drummers!

  • agree at 10000000000000000%

  • How amazin is this guy, every video i see leaves me laughing and learning!! he just teaches you to feel more, i dont think i've ever seen any drummer in touch with the rythm and his drums as much as Bernard Purdie!!!

    aaaooochochochocho... :)

  • Fat guy bored and checking his watch at 1:19.

  • he is making a note. . Look again

  • Mr Purdie when are you coming to canada toronto ontario i would like to see one of your session?

  • BEST DRUMMER IN THE WORLD

  • LOL

I love this guy. So much groove. Funny guy, too.

  • MORE COWBELL ! incredible man.

  • noooo too short. i want more!!!

  • greatest groove drummer ever

  • Yes, greatest groove drummer ever. Even with just his bass drum cross-stick "warm up," it's already grooving like MAD. He just has some kind of magical rhythmic force in his blood or something... groove mojo, maybe. Some of us get it, some of us not enough, and others, like him, get 2 helpings. No complaint. I tap my foot and smile EVERY time I hear this man play.

FYI: Check out Steely Dan's Making of Home At Last, on here or google vid. At one point, his drum part's isolated. Whoa. Heavy.

  • haha yea man. I love this guy. So good. Groove is more important then fancy fills.

And i'll check the guy out. Thanks :D.

  • this guy is the greatest!

  • omg wie scheisse is bitte dieser typ. das was der da in fast 3 minuten celebriert konnte ich schon nach 1 jahr schlagzeug unterricht spielen
