I am having a problem with my photoshop, when I try to put the grid on, I can only see the grids on the reference picture. When I try to put the grid on the new file, it is only like an outline (I don't know how else to explain it). How do I fix this ? I want to get started very soon :P
@zxcxcvxc I was in art school for four years. Grids are for beginners and should be used to learn. Also it should be dropped as soon as possible to gain a better understanding of proportion. All I'm saying is that tracing and grids falls under the same spectrum. I didnt say its tracing, I said you might as well trace. If you use grids, then good for you. however, you arent doing yourself a favour
Although this teaches you to reproduce a photo to paint, it is not quite painting. I recommend the viewers to go watch other channels where grids and eyedropper tools aren't used off a real photo. At least not as often. If you are going to use a grid, you might as well trace I say. This wont teach you how to draw or paint from reference, but rather hinder your ability to learn.
@ThePhar0ah if youve ever taken a drawing class you know they teach students to use grids and other tricks to gain a better idea of proportions. this guy is using common techniques and tools for artists which isnt at all the same as tracing. I understand for some artists his methods may seem crude or unconventional but there really is no right and wrong way in art. next thing you know someone is gonna tell him to put down the computer and go get real canvas and paint.
@ThePhar0ah True... But, Chuck Close used a grid system to create his realism. I'm sure Leo used his own form of "guide" or grid as well. Do you feel he painted The Last Supper without any measurements in place? Painting landscape and painting a face is rather different, imo. The grids just help you paint in sections rather as a whole
@globi227 And I am not stating this to argue, just you can't say "hinders the ability to learn," because you are still learning :) Just a different fashion and a new technique for a lot of people.
@ThePhar0ah Actually you are wrong and right. Of course it does not teach you how to DRAW, this is not a drawing tutorial. If you can read, the title says PAINTING tutorial, there is a difference.
As for "hindering" ones ability to learn from this, you are wrong again. I've learned how to use a variety of colors, for highlighting, shadows, and blending colors for depth. This will help me when I learn to draw better. Great tutorial for beginners, there are plenty of techniques out there.
Hahahha I had this vid full screen and i paused it and kept trying to minimize. Then I was wondering why the vid kept playing and it wasn't minimizing....hahaha i was trying to click the buttons on your screen. xD
Excellent video, thank you very much :) It taught me exactly what I was stuck on, and some things I didn't know I was missing! Again, thank you. Favourited.
I could easly paint this with real paint but doing it digitally is a little bit of a pain in the butt did you use the smudge tool at all or was it all with a soft brush the whole time, also I'm getting a tablet soon does it feel more natural that way?
This is an incredible technique! I have been struggling with masks and knockout layers trying to replicate these results for ages. Been playing with it all day and this is, hands down, the most valuable tutorial I have come across in a while. You're a freaking hero.
Thanks so much for this excellent tutorial! I just got a wacom tablet and this helped me alot because its hard to know where to start painting something like this =)
Good gawd I love this... Must take you hours. I admit I was skeptical at first. Especially when you started throwing in base skintones around the eye area and it came out looking kind of like mismatched puzzle pieces. I was like, "omg, can't wait to see how he fixes that mess..." But you did, and that's awesome.
very well done tutorial. I'm so glad you are showing how to do this in a pace I can follow, plus you speak so clearly and explain well. Thanks so much!!
seriously -.- ... if you you use the colour picker and work with a grind etc. why would you even do this painitn? you re doing nothing on your own ... the diffuculty of a portrait study lies in the choice of colour and value as well as the shape of the different parts of the face ... not at all impressiv or anything.
epic work mate :) i would like to point some things out however :) some tips that i personally found helpful :) 1. always use a textured brush 2. more attention to edges :) far from being critical just sharing :) you have yourself a sub :)
Great tutorial, thank you! Probably the best I've encountered so far on this level, not too basic but doesn't expect viewers to know everything either. I loved that you incorporated how to create brushes as well! Oh, and great art! :) Off to see the other we are design videos...
really good tutorial! I'm wondering about something though - when I draw with the grids up, it's like it's dragging the pen towards it, if you know what I mean. Like.. it attracts the pencil lines towards the lines of the grid, so I get a lot of straight lines around there, messing with my sketch- can't get it smooth.
Urgh, it's so hard to explain. I hope you know what I mean, and know how to fix it? :P
This is the best tutorial I have ever seen... thanks for all the info its help me alot. I didn't know you could do all this detail with photoshop, I been using corel painter11 for my work but now im going to start using PS... thanks
you are genius!! ur painting inspired me a lot..and make my 1st digital painting...but can u tell me is there any special mouse u used?? coz its very hard to draw with my mouse...or may b i need a lot practice....
This is amazing! I can't believe it. I'm only 10 minutes in and have been working on my portrait of Eva Longoria. I actually sketched my picture and scanned it in, then started following this tutorial. Already my portrait looks great! Thank you so much for putting this video up! It is the most helpful one I've found on youtube!
Amazing job! really appreciate this tutorial.. Was wondering, do you guys have a tutorial that shows the painting process, for instance like the one that begins at 14:50 and so on? I know you guys showed it here, it's just that it was in fast speed and I understand that it takes too long to paint on normal speed, so can you guys post a tutorial on something a bit smaller to paint? just to show how painting is done with different lightning and shadows effects. Thank you again and much appreciated
@GuitarLuf ah thanks! Yeah I am aiming to release a few more indepth tutorials, free ones seem to be fairly hard to come across so if I can help people out then thats a good thing.
