It was Michael Crawford who this happened to. The chair didn't turn and he had to whisper to Meg that he was still there. There have been a few mishaps, Dave Willets fell and broke his leg in the graveyard scene during Wandering Child. They had to postpone the rest of the show. In another performance, the chandelier wouldn't raise after the crash at the end of Act 1.
LOL! I'm so glad I found this. I love hearing about stage bloopers! But can you imagine how scary that would be if you were the Phantom and the chair didn't work? :D Wow that would freak me out!
i met hugh today backstage at "Oliver!" at the walnut street theatre (he played fagin) and he is the nicest guy i ever met. he is really down to earth kind of guy and i hope he goes really far.
You know, whenever I see the show, I'm always afraid that the chair isn't going to work, and Meg is going to pull back the cape, and he's still going to be there. I can't even remember how many times I've seen the show, but that part still makes me nervous every single time. lol Hilarious.

Hahaha thats hilarious!! I really love Hugh now...which is funny because I saw clips of him last year and I wasn't too sold on his Phantom. But I adore him now...I think I perfer his non phantom stuff though. Not that he isn't a great Phantom...but it jsut prooves how versatille his voice is..
I met Jeff just a few moments ago and he told me a few stories about his time on the stage (as you know he's played various roles) but he left out this story!! He works a few blocks from my school...I may have to go up there next week and question him about this ^_^ at least it would give me a chance to talk to him again /_^
LOl im a magician and when magic goes wrong ,sometimes its really funny but that must have been hilarious!

Yes, he was the Phantom for six months in 1999, left to do "Martin Guerre," then came back to play the Phantom from 2003 until 2005.
