I was at the Richmond VA air show in 1979 and saw a BD-5J fly through a C5A Galaxy air craft that was on static display on the flight line. I don't think that was an approved maneuver due to the announcer being caught by surprise. Was that YOU???
My brother Markus Bott had been tortured during 5.5 years by the German BND,the former GESTAPO. I recorded more than 100 videotapes which ended up in the legal system. My brother was tortured during 1.5 years despite several legal procedures pending. He was assassinated on July 11th 2009 because of our homepage, linked on my channel, and our book Der Totalitäre Staat. If my homepage disappears, the BND will have assassinated me as well
Thumbs up if you want the BND to stop torturing my parents
I thought I recall seeing a microjet engine once, or at least a prototype: it was basically a small, square, thin, flat hollow plate with a turbine fan (essentially, just the blades and axle) inside (plus, I'm sure some intricate channels not readily visible; this was on TV some years ago), and it was handheld size.
@crass770 Yes, it is the smallest. There is no smaller jet that can carry a passenger. The Cri-Cri jet is the closest one but it is longer than the BD-5J.
@crass770 The Jet-Man is not an aircraft, it is a man with a backpack. Sorry, but it doesn't qualify for the record, otherwise the inventory of the early jet pack that works with hydrogen peroxide would have had the record decades ago.
@flybd5 there was a jet that was suppoed to be dropped by bigger version of B17 of the eigth airforce, it worked, and was much small. but do to fuel consumption, was only used 3 times in combat
@crass770 Hell yes this is the smallest dude! hold the guiness book of world records for the smalest production jet EVER!!! to bad you cant buy them anymore nearly everyone keeps them.
It's actually smaller than the Komet, and if I remember correctly, the Komet was powered by a liquid-fuel rocket. However, can you imagine one of these powered by the same rocket used in Rutan's rocket-powered Long-EZ? Woof!
@flybd5 let's see...a wife and kid to raise...not enough money to pay myself as many flight hrs as i wish already today...the fact that if i could offer myself one of these,i'd rather go for a DA42 or a BD10...
Forgive me if I'm not exactly correct because I had to give up my license a long time ago without a lot of hours, but the flight envelope considers speed and g's. If you don't have enough speed to fly you are on one side of the envelop. If you are going so fast that the weakest parts of your aircraft will be damaged you are at the other.
If you pull too many positive or negative g's your airplane will either stall or fall apart and so when you put that together you can draw the 2d graph.
As far as I know Microturbo in November 2008 asked the certification authorities to revoke the certification approval for its TRS 18-series miniature turbojets which in the most recent versions produce 325 lbt thrust. The company did not return a request for additional information as to why it exited the market. However, I wonder if the venerable BD-5J can be fitted with the also small První Brnenská Strojírna (PBS) TJ-100-A which produce 247 lbf thrust.
The certification cannot be revoked., Microturbo has no such authority because they didn't get the certification, Ames Industrial did, and the FAA does not do such things.
Unless I am much mistaken, this aircraft was VH-RJQ owned by Quinten Campbell of Canberra Australia. I have a 40% scale model of this plane, from a Byron Originals kit, only had about 8 flights so far. Power is the Byron 6"
Almost correct, it was VH-JRQ, I bought it from him in 2001 and did quite a bit of work and modifications to get it to an airworthy condition before I submitted it to Guiness for the world record as the World's Smallest Jet.
Oh, and that's him in the video, I was running the camera, I brought him to Texas to do some repairs that were needed from some mishandling during transit from Sydney to Dallas.

I know what this is, I own it and i took the video.
I was asking about a different aircraft described by Xunkun.

Can't find any reference to that. What was the model designation?

@flybd5 This is a BD-5J Microjet

True, but the record is for an a/c that can carry the pilot, not one that the pilot has to watch from the ground. :)

this is small, but by no means the smallest

there's one flying in an eighties's james bond movie.
plus, there's another type of micro jet flying in france:the cri-cri,twin engined.
they both look as ridiculous, but still,i'd give a lot to be given the opportunity to fly in any of them!

Richard Bach describes flying one in his book "One."
A BLAST, as I read it, though he does caution that it is during take-off that one is close to the edge of the flight envelope.

When you're taking off on any aircraft you're always at the end of the flight envelope. You're just entering it.

I agree, but frankly I think it is a valid alternative to the TRS-18. The folks are Microturbo are not the most helpful.

Reeper1999 3 years ago
I think the engine only puts out about 350 lbs. of thrust.
DougRodrigues 3 years ago
More like 225 lbf. The TRS-18-1 version of the Microturbo line puts out 360 lbf. Net thrust out the tailpipe depends on several factors.
