@timmypstyle that is because of the sensor in the gas tank that shows how much gas in the tank thinks it has less gas because when he floored it all the gas went to the back of the tank
@Tallerico500 stepper motors are used to control idle in fuel injected engines o.O
fuel meters use variable resisters; the more fuel, the less resistance- the less fuel, the more resistance, hence a lower reading on the 5V reference signal to the fuel gauge.
@bonecsontos that torque monster has no problem hitting 100mph. coulda bought me one but i didnt because i needed a daily driver that didnt need to come with its own oil rig. 89 silverado with no rust, new dunlop mudders, 4.10 gears, 4 spd and a new 454 for only $4,000. the other was a mid to late 70s f150 4x4 all custom , lifted and had a new built up ford power 460 crate motor for $8,000.
lol as soon as u punch it the gas gauge goes from half to 1/4 but thats just cause of the mechanical system but pretty funny, dont put a 427 in er though fuel consuption is 100 liters for 80 km of driving lol
Haha I love how the gas gauge drops as soon as you stomp on these old chevys. I know its just cuz of the gas sloshing to the back of back the tank but its a reminder that punchin an old carberated big blocks gunna cost ya
@1godfather01 the tanks are shaped long and narrow . . . thats just it sloshing around lol when its done mine is usually A LOTTT less than when i started lolll
u have more guts than me man! i had a 79 big ten and i never dared to go over 75 because i was afraid a gust of wind would blow my butt off the road lol. they are great trucks though!
ok. the fuel gauges in all GM trucks before 88' were mechanical and were not precise on gas measurement because the float is mechanical and moves arround as the gas sloshes arround in the tank. thus giving an estimated ammount of fuel in the tank. hope i cleared this up for some people.

On the older gmc/chevy trucks the way the fuel sending unit was in the tank as the gas slushes to the back of the tank it would lift the fuel sender float and it was wired straight to the gauge so there is no control module to buffer the signal
That's pretty good. I had a '78 Chevy Big 10 with a 454. These trucks are pretty heavy, and real un-aerodynamic. That motor is pushing a big square truck through a lot of air at high speed.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Aerodynamics has almost nothing to do with performance or fuel economy in the long run, that's a proven Scientific fact. The main thing that causes drag on a pickup truck is an open, empty box
Nice way to get offensive over nothing man.And the 383 is much lighter than the 454..So straight out of the box in a light car,the 383 will be better for racing..The 454 on the other hand has more torque which is why you HARDLY EVER SEE A 383 IN FARM TRUCKS,ETC!.Its most of the time 454'S.Which as i've already said are better for pulling.
I have a 1985 Chevrolet Silverado Shortbed 2WD with a 1998 350 Vortec in it, eldebrock aluminum intake and a quadrajet card, 350 turbo automatic, that thing runs just as good as this truck and has 2.92 gearing, but not quite as fast on the take off. Chevrolets rock but the 350 engine is my favorite, it runs just as good as any of them, if right, damn it is so fast, I've raced all kinds of trucks and "NEVER" been beat with it, and the other trucks were all souped up, mine is bone stock.
@letsstartariot95 depending if on what stock 440 it was!!!! If it's the interceptor 440 or the heavy duty 440 found in the trucks or RVs then it's bye bye 454!!!!!!! But I'm comparing stock 454s to stock 440's from the mid to late 70's not earlier

moe346john 2 years ago 2
it's a mechanical gauge that works with a floater, under hard acceleration the fluid in the tank sloshes back and the floater sinks to it's level.
but yeah, you could prolly watch the gas gauge move with a 454 :P
