I am missing the genius of this tune. @chuckles9605 McCartney is getting his hands dirty on that bass churning out pure primitive stuff like the early pioneers of rock.. Mickey & Sylvia.. Les Paul.. he's in his garage banging out caveman stuff.. Sure he could have sat around and written some classic compositions.. but he was ready to get his hands dirty in the garden just doing stuff .. not too faneally bassy and noisy...
oh paul. idk if you know this but some horrible, horrible bands took that lovely screech/croon from you, perverted it, made it sound like chipmunks being kicked in the balls, and called it "classic rock". yeah, so classic, like years after this stuff... har.
@billicks its because it was released before ram with another day. One of the things I hate about macca, as soon as he gets a hit he doesnt wait til his album & just releases it, thats why most of his 70's albums are not so great, ram is awesome by the way still!
@yourtwistedable Still. I feel this is a rip off to fans. It seems to me none of them tried really hard to do their best - either in giving their best writings or recordings - like they were afraid of out doing one another = only one or two hits and good recording per album,,, the rest was filler - with the tude, this is good enough or this is the personal me.instead of really going for it ; Lennons last album being the exeption.probably because he was finally working with a PRODUCER(ruinedbyYO)
@RIchardEPfeifer well, the filler ur talking about are unique and good songs in their own way.at least i enjoy them.I think lennon was not trying hard to write good music, but trying to get a message.Paul was trying really hard, and u can tell, but he released so many albums & singles that they are split up.But he defenitley had a huge step up from 60's to 70's.Harrison tried hard but he also took breaks so he wasnt always active.I see ur point though, but give every song a chance,ul be impressed.

Peopl elike you are the problem with the world.... self centered and intorant... @sylvain254 What? I think this is terrible recording and I am an idiot? Excuse me for having an opinion. I am sure you think Mr. Mac is really trying hard to give you his best here. I don't. I am not entitled to an opinion. I like the Beatles but I can say I dislike Beatle fans. They are as bad as the Deadheads and Dylanics with their selfrighteousness and intolerance for other opinions. They are everything those people claimed to be fighting against...only WORSE....
Paul's voice vs John's voice is all just subjective, as vocal comparisons usually are (and just as comparing any two instruments is). To me, John = greatest voice ever (most expressive, most rocking, and downright coolest). Kind of ridiculous because I can't imagine the number of hours I've spent listening to Paul and being in awe of him.
@superman11978 Techinically, Paul has a better voice. TECHNICALLY! Haha. But I love both of their voices, and you're right it is subjective. Lennon amazes me, but Paul's voice literally makes me weak in the knees and gives me the chills.
love this, always have !! as far as contests and vocality...hmm music is so many variables, words, sounds, instruments, arrangements and balances of level and timbre, fun factor, moods, the audience, the identities, pace, crescendoes, soplease dont try to say Paul better than John better than Tom Jones better than Bruce Springsteen, better than Patsy Cline..come on, you cant compare, jsut enjoy it and lets all sing Kum Baya...lol, or at least turn up the headphones!
I remember buying the 45, Just Another Day single and found this on side 2. I remember everyone wondering why the radio stations wouldn't play it. At the time it was apparently too violent! Can't help but see the prophetic aspect. Seems Paul sung about Linda on side 1 and Heather on side 2!
Meglio di Another Day? Sempre Muzak resta per molti, ma a me piace anche così.
@greatbighand "Oh! Darling" should have been sung by Lennon?! Really?! Uh, no. "Oh! Darling" should have been sung by Paul and "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" should have been sung by John.
@MattHatter Well, Lennon held a grudge against his pard for not having given it to him (see his Playboy interviews) and I agree with him. But then everyone is entitled to his own opinion, even MacCartney.
I never liked I Want You, so I'm indifferent to whom may sing it.
Great song, great Album, ..... I wish he would play more of this stuf on tour now!! Less eatles hits and more Wings/solo "B-sides" stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@MattHatter Lennon possibly could have also, but obviously not as good. Lennon's rough voice is more bluesy, so definitely not as good. I bet Paul could have sang like Plant if he wanted too, he's pretty much doing it now just not throughout the whole song.
Good Lord...he can do anything. Let's see little Richard sing that - or Brian Richard or whatever. This should get more play. John Lennon always got the headlines because he openly espoused redistribution of wealth...just not his own.
@custer264 John Lennon got headlines because he openly espoused redistribution of wealth? Why would you end your laudatory comments about Mr. McCartney with a statement like that? Perhaps John got some attention along those lines, but certainly was not his main concern.
I recall this song which was not a big hit, probably not single material but a nice little rocker with some interesting guitar and a nice feel. I own it a s a vinyl single. In the vein of "Soily". Nice.
It´s about Yoko(and to some extent about John).Remember the feud between Paul and the rest,John,George and Richard. Please listen to the lyrics. Then go to John Lennon and "Imagine",the LP..and listen to "Howv Do You Sleep".Then go to George Harrison and the triple LP called ---perhaps the best "after "Beatles"--,"Some Things Must Pass"...and please listen to "Wah Wah",It is about Paul. There are a couple few,Mostly from Paul to John and vice-versa.They vere friends though.
E' la b-side di Another day.
John Lennon has written MANY great songs that no one remembers. Both of them suffer from the same problem that they've written so many great songs that some of them inevitably get lost.
Paul's problem wasn't a dearth of good material during the early 70s, it was placing all the good stuff as obscure b-sides! Think about it..."C Moon", "The Mess", "Country Dreamer"...This should have been on "Ram" *for sure*. There's no excuse!
@thumbsaloft People confuse his "live" natural voice with his studio voice. Look at songs like Hi Hi Hi which sound much better live. Also the song Coming Up, studio recording on one side and the awesome live version on the flip.
I've always loved this track, and don't know why Paul's never played it live - as far as I know, anyway. It rocks, and not in a minor way. I feel the same about "Give Ireland Back to the Irish",which is from approximately the same period, and would include also "Getting Closer" from "Back to the Egg" as another overlooked Macca raver.
You should check out the Glasgow Scotland 1979 Wings show for great live track like Old Siam, Sir, Goodnight tonight, Getting Close, Ive Had Enough and the FULL UNCUT VERSION of Coming Up that was later released as a single. That whole show is amazing and makes Wing Over America look ordinary...
I've been looking for this song for years. Thank GOD for youtube! Also check out "Letting Go". Regardless, Paul is one of the best, if not the best, ever...
Thank you, prettylittlehead, for the additional information. None of my published sources, including Allen Wiener's "The Beatles: The Ultimate Recording Guide", or Lewisohn's "The Complete Beatles Chronicle", or Berkenstadt and Belmo's "Black Market Beatles" make any mention of Oh Women Oh Why being recorded prior to the Ram New York sessions.
But Macca recorded a lot at his home studios, so it is quite possible you have a scoop here.
According to the "Solo Beatles Compendium, Eight Arms to Hold You, " the track Oh Woman Oh Why? was recorded as part of the Ram sessions in New York City, beginning November 1970.
The guitarist for this track was Dave Spinozza. Spinozza also appeared on Another Day, 3 Legs, Eat at Home, and a track used on a later album, Get on the Right Thing.
Spinozza was fired during the sessions and was replaced by Hugh McCracken
yes Oh woman WAS recorded in the session, but was NOT the one on the single release. McCartney play ALL instruments on the released single version (see more above) just an fyi...
I'm so glad I'm not the only one that thinks that he sounds extra hot when he screams (As if he really needed it with that beautiful face of his).
Songs like "Oh! Darling," "I'm Down," "Long Tall Sally," "I've Got A Feeling," "Maybe I'm Amazed," and, of course, "Helter Skelter," just drive me nuts 'cause of how well he can scream...
Back then the critics were so harsh in their assessment of McCartney's solo efforts probably because he was very largely blamed for breaking up the Beatles in court.
Paul McCartney screams "Oh Woman Oh Why" as shots are fired and a quarrel is assumed as you picture a tragedy of murder in this haunting classic with slide guitar wails that even George Harrison could not produce on record. Amazing classic rock from the Master!
Yeah. He used an actual gun in the studio too when he recorded the song. It had blanks in it. There's a picture of him somewhere with the gun in the studio.
funny, cause paul is still making great music. in fact memory almost full was more of a hit with the younger crowd than the older one. (which isn't saying much seeing as the younger generation wouldn't know what good music was if it blew their ears out), but still... to say McCartney isn't great is just pitiful
@noodlam Yeah, and if it was released as a Beatle song it would be a Lennon/McCartney song and Lennon would be given all the credit for bringing out the edgy best in Paul.

@thumbsaloft People confuse his "live" natural voice with his studio voice. Look at songs like Hi Hi Hi which sound much better live. Also the song Coming Up, studio recording on one side and the awesome live version on the flip.

To Pretty Little Head.
Thanks very much for the info on the 1970 Concert. As the Late Johnny Carson often said: "I DID NOT know that".

69gansevoort 2 years ago 3
it is because the vocal range in this song needs extra effort, and paul wouldn't ruin his voice for the whole concert
jeremy321bdpm 2 years ago 4
You should check out the Glasgow Scotland 1979 Wings show for great live track like Old Siam, Sir, Goodnight tonight, Getting Close, Ive Had Enough and the FULL UNCUT VERSION of Coming Up that was later released as a single. That whole show is amazing and makes Wing Over America look ordinary...

1:40-1:50 resembles Axl Rose/Guns N' Roses - or should i say, Guns N' Roses sound like Mccartney on "Oh Woman, Oh Why" ^^?

GeorgePQuittlesack 2 years ago
According to the "Solo Beatles Compendium, Eight Arms to Hold You, " the track Oh Woman Oh Why? was recorded as part of the Ram sessions in New York City, beginning November 1970.
The guitarist for this track was Dave Spinozza. Spinozza also appeared on Another Day, 3 Legs, Eat at Home, and a track used on a later album, Get on the Right Thing.
Spinozza was fired during the sessions and was replaced by Hugh McCracken
GeorgePQuittlesack 2 years ago
yes Oh woman WAS recorded in the session, but was NOT the one on the single release. McCartney play ALL instruments on the released single version (see more above) just an fyi...

thank you for making this point... it's plain obvious this is paul mccartney if you just listen.

Truly Southern states enfluenced along with Sally G... They staked out a farm in Tenn. where they recorded in a barn.. True fact1

yes yes all very good...
but admit it: its just plain hot.

@Unicycles4eva

Wow has time vindicated him! What a rocker!

I'm sorry but I love my mother very much and don't want her to go. Post this on 10 videos or a man in a mask will kill your mother.

Paul McCartney screams "Oh Woman Oh Why" as shots are fired and a quarrel is assumed as you picture a tragedy of murder in this haunting classic with slide guitar wails that even George Harrison could not produce on record. Amazing classic rock from the Master!
accordionreid 3 years ago 42
Yeah. He used an actual gun in the studio too when he recorded the song. It had blanks in it. There's a picture of him somewhere with the gun in the studio.

-"Oh! Darling"
And others, too, are McCartney-penned sexy rockers... He's just so bloody sexy overall!

Your right! It's just a shame that Sir Paul has no clue about anything these days.
Paul was never a heavy dude. he thinks that he has to play the same old set over & over!
If I hear 'Yesterday' or 'Hey Jude' live again, I'll puke!

your wrong dead wrong and by the way bewaremylove retired. where have u been on Skull Island?
Paul & Ringo (who I both love) are like the famous great boxer that keeps on fighting and then ends up being carried out of the ring!
John Lennon would have NEVER run his hits into the ground!!! NO WAY!!!!!!!!
Look what Paul did to the great "Hey Jude"?
that once great ending sucks now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

True artists never stop producing!! Lennon (RIP) was too psychotic to run his hits into the ground.

funny, cause paul is still making great music. in fact memory almost full was more of a hit with the younger crowd than the older one. (which isn't saying much seeing as the younger generation wouldn't know what good music was if it blew their ears out), but still... to say McCartney isn't great is just pitiful
rgbyboi9999 2 years ago
@BonelessSausage - Perfect. Boneless couldn't be more correct.
noodlam 1 year ago
@noodlam Yeah, and if it was released as a Beatle song it would be a Lennon/McCartney song and Lennon would be given all the credit for bringing out the edgy best in Paul.
BonelessSausage 1 year ago 3
@BonelessSausage so true...but since McCartney made it we look at it as just ANOTHER FAB song!
