  • Yeah, i don't understand why it's so hard for scientists to think maybe there is something bigger than you, i.e. God, that indeed A.) is infinitely smart and created every physical thing including DNA and B.) made it impossible for people to ever find out about his existence in this life because of his infinitely higher level of intelligence. I used to not believe but then i thought.....wow i really don't feel just like a bunch of complex chemical reactions... i feel ALIVE.

  • A "guy in the sky", so to speak, DID make it. He's called God. I'm just sayin'. :)

  • holy fuck! Now that's a reason to sub. Cheers m8!

  • We have a rule around my place: there will be no DNA exchanges, extractions, or other DNA related peccadilloes in the kitchen.

  • I did this in my high school biology class, and you explained it better in five minutes then the teacher did in fifty

  • very cool stuff mate

  • Can I use a different type of fruit besides strawberries? ...my sister ate them all...XD

  • 4 christians watched this video and hate DNA/evolution

  • What does DNA taste like

  • @powerm1985 You could have put the DNA in the laser we see what appears!

  • I kept thinking you were going to eat it. XD

  • And I thought I was shite with chop-sticks

  • EVERYTHINGS FU*KIN WONDERFUL!

  • you just helped me with my biology homework haha

  • This dude is really hot!

  • I did this with an onion

  • I did this with an onion

  • Cooool

  • Sorry to disappoint but it's called sperm, not DNA. All strawberries have men's sperm inside

  • Can you use ethanol?

  • I wish you were my chemistry teacher in highschool.... but you were in grammar school :/

  • "Holy fuck this shit actually exist" lmao thats what i was thinking.

  • I kind of want to know what DNA tastes like...

  • Good work again mate, dont know why everyone goes on about the sound. it sounds okay to me. stop taking things appart

  • This is all very interesting but now i think you should eat it.

  • I love your videos. This was brilliant.

  • I extracted DNA from a strawberry a year ago, it's still sitting in its eppendorf in my draw; I also did it several weeks ago, that tube is in my car. Been waiting for a chance to test it on a dead finch, chilling in the freezer.

  • 3:40 - Yes, Snot. THAT is what it looks like. Certainly.

  • I already did the cabbage litmus test thing from your earlier video. I can't wait to try this one out. Keep these coming!

  • You know what would be sweet? If you got a big thick sheet of aluminum, weakened its structural integrity with some gallium, and then punched through it while explaining how the gallium weakened the aluminum.

  • You mission, should you choose to except it.

Is to do this and leave a strawberry jizz trail with it on a female teachers desk. Make it look like someone has bust a nut on her desk and left it there. And put loads of it too. Make it look like whoever did it can drown a puppy with his mighty bukake power.

They say you learn more when you have fun. Time to learn how to make strawberry DNA (and the scientific process involved) and how to not piss yourself laughing in class. XD

    And video it.

  • Woooowoooowwoooooo....Did he seriously just make strawberry sperm?!!

  • Hmmm, its not much science if you can't do tests on it.

How can you test that it is DNA? Or do something with it, that you can only do with DNA?

  • @noobenstein

You can trust him, he's the Doctor.

  • @Corporatism That makes a lot of sense actually.

  • eat it.

  • SLURP IT UP!!

  • "for snot thou art, and unto snot shalt thou return."

  • GZZ YOU MADE THE FUCKING HOME PAGE!

  • Subbed! knew it but this vid was great!!

  • Way cool!

  • You need to improve your sound quality. A clip on mic on your collar should do it!

  • "Got us into science" Really meaw

  • Isn't the DNA extracted contaminated with the DNA from your hands and the trees the towels were made from?

  • Ok get the DNA then what ?

  • What does the soap do? I didn't catch that.

  • A science channel with video game music and sound effects references?

    SUBBED!

  • Thats pretty cool, but what does dna taste like?

  • Where can I get rubbing alcohol? Boots? Or somewhere more specialised?

  • The audio would be better without the background music.

  • Another brilliant video, thanks :)

  • Are there no other components in the strawberry that are soluble in water but not in alcohol?

  • @ubermammal That's what i was wondering. How much of that solution is actually DNA.

  • The echos are a large part of the sound problem.

If you hung up some blankets or sheets on the walls behind the camera, it'd do wonders for the sound quality.

  • @Azyashi make a pritty awsome den as well.

  • That is awesome!

  • Great video, I'll be doing something similar later in the year for my biology labs. Great to have you back.

  • I remember doing this experiment with a thalamus gland in high school, so unrelated to the video I ask this.

Why would a teacher give a bunch of bored fourteen year olds raw meat to throw around when you can just as easily use strawberries?

  • Could I do this with human flesh?

  • @DukeDonut Yes, although it would be more effective with certain glans.

  • @Ofrolvi793 I should have close to all the glans in my basement.

  • What makes it gooey?- is it to do with the structure of all the molecules you drew out coming together? You said the DNA won't dissolve in alcohol- that's why it's not one big solution, i'd imagine. Would the DNA be like a powdery solid once the alcohol evaporates? I'm obviously by no means "good" at science, but I'm still interested in having at least a basic understanding of what just happened in this video (on top of what you've already so nicely explained).. I'll consult google in a sec. :)

  • @lisaking22 You have to understand that DNA isn't just the loose molecules Myles showed, they are all connected in a long chain, called a polymer. Proteins are also polymers. Boiling an egg will cause all the proteins in the yolk to denature and fold into the hard jelly substance we all know. DNA pretty much does the same thing in this instance. The long chains fold, twist and turn to produce this gooey substance.

  • @Gigano1986 Ohh okay, that makes a lot of sense to me! So it's the Isopropyl that denatures the strands of DNA in this case. Thank you for taking the time to briefly explain, it's all very fascinating.

  • please be my biology teacher!

  • Hey Myles, i would really love if you could write the ingredients on screen for your not english native subscribers :)

Love the vid! I'll try it soon!

  • This was one of my favorite labs to do with middle school and high school students.

  • Eat it.

  • Holy damn that's epic. Your videos are always so amazing, keep it up!

  • Everything really is F***ing wonderful! :D

  • This very experiment in my highschool biology class is what got me into Biochem as a major. Also that I had an awesome biology teacher who started one of the first highschool level biotech programs in the country (the US, not UK)...that helped too :P

  • @ARKAtheist ...this may sound odd. I had a very similar teacher. What was his name?

  • @Evnyofdeath Bodznick

  • @ARKAtheist ...Holy Crap. Arcadia right? I had him 9th grade.

  • Very cool! Love your videos - always excited when there's a new one!

  • how cool is that, wow

  • Ah it's good to see you back Miles. (: As usual, fantastic stuff. :) I look forward to the next video. :)

  • wow! that was so cool and so easy to do! why dont we do this in school??? all of out labs are dumb =( anyways great video thanks! :D

  • DNA extraction in your kitchen? i thought you were going to bust a nut over the kitchen table.... ~_~

  • the sludge of life... awesome.

  • Very cool

  • \m/ hails \m/

  • Thank you for your work. I look forward to your future material.

  • What would that look like under a microscope?

  • looks like sperm

  • We hate to inform you, but you've also extracted the DNA from the smut growing on your strawberry.

  • great video! :D

  • We did this in biology class last year, with some different chemicals and our own cells but still.

  • That's so much easier to do than I was expecting. Putting strawberries on the shopping list for tomorrow. Thanks for showing us this!

  • this seems far cheaper than the way i did it thousands of times...where were you before I was laid off due to lack of funding :P

  • How powerful of a microscope would you need to see the individual strands of dna?

  • @bantam700

You would need an electron microscope.

  • @bantam700 DNA is 2 nanometers across, so no light microscope will ever have enough magnification. Some types of electron microscopes can image individual atoms, so that might work.

  • @bantam700 well just google up their size and calculate the magnification. generally, if you take a high school microscope u should be fine

  • You should've tried tasting the DNA.

  • @razoras That was my first thought as well.

  • Your kitchen is a very acoustically live room. You can deaden it by putting a some blankets/towels etc on the walls or floors temporarily while recording.

  • The over-dubbing of your voice was actually worse than the echo effects of the room. But the bigger problem is the use of music that plays on regardless of the tone or volume of your voice. It drowns out some of what you say and so should stop while you are talking: what you say is more important than a ditty in the background.

  • People will either like this, or be grossed out, or both :p I did this experiment with cheek scrapings (on the inside of my mouth of course) and you could then have it put into a heart shaped necklace. Very cool to have one of your own DNA strands with you as a necklace for a while. The professor said it wouldn't last long though.

  • I'm slightly saddened by the swear in your into because I want to recommend your vids to my fellow girl guide leaders, but some of them would ostracize me for it. I do intend to do some of your experiments with the kids, though :)

  • @TheLizardLass You should download it, cut out the intro, and then mirror it for other that have this same issue.

  • Amazing. Thank you man :)

  • Hard to believe - but I did see this done to some kind of slug - so could be true =)

  • Sweet (get it.)

  • The Kitchen? Usually do my DNA extraction in the bedroom.

  • Strawberries and dna? Too easy...

  • Freakin Awesome, I've done this in the lab often but never thought about how to do it in the kitchen.

  • If the dirty mind is dirty, then the funny title is funny.

  • Reminds me of freshman college biology! now crystalize that DNA

  • As always, a great video. Time go go and by some propanol

  • I'm going to try this. Like your videos.

  • I only got one question Nyles: Does it still taste like strawberry? :)

  • @Phyrexious No, it wouldn't. All the components that would ellict a flavour sensation in your mouth/nose would be left behind in the discarded solid mushy material or the water phase when the DNA was precipicated. It wouldn't really taste like anything, once the isopropanol had evaporated.

  • @82caspar And if you drank it before the Iso had evaporated you'd probably die or become incredibly sick XD

  • @ARKAtheist You will go blind.

  • @Ofrolvi793 I'd heard that before, but I wasn't sure about it. To much Iso is a bad thing is the point.

  • @Phyrexious probably rubbing alcohol....

  • Great to see you back in action Myles! Always interesting topics.

  • 14 and nerd, yes.

  • I just want to pat you, will you let me pat you?

  • Good video, as always

  • Fucking brilliant!

  • Man, there's a shitload of DNA in strawberries.

  • Comment removed

  • Hi I come from C0nc0rdance, I come in Peac.. *cough* Science!

  • I always wondered how the DNA extraction looks like!

    Thank you!

  • I did this once in science class, I got the supreme mucus and an A+. :D

  • Idea! Link to HHMI bacterial identification lab!

  • I did this live on BlogTV last year. 'cept I used a banana and my own bucchal cells. It's a favorite rainy day activity of the kids... I always have ice-cold Everclear in the freezer just in case.

    watch?v=TyNzfTAhAFs

  • @C0nc0rdance "For Medicinal Purposes Only" I assume?

  • Awesome video - It is crazy when you look at it and think 'this is DNA!'

  • I didn't have any strawberries to extract DNA from so I used my little sisters pet hamster instead. Can you please post a video on how to reverse the process as she'll be home from her dance class soon.

  • @Zed1967 To duplicate DNA you`ll need two hamsters and cozy cage ;)

  • Dilettante! Where's the Proteinase K? Where's the Phenol-Chloroform-Isoamyl Alcohol? Not even a silica column? Are you saying you DON'T have these things in your kitchen?

I hereby kick you out of the League of Nerdy Scientists.

  • @C0nc0rdance LoL c0ncordance miles hasn't been in action for a while go easy and let him in

  • Great video, as always. Really enjoy your little experiments that can be done at home.

Still, this shouldn't be the only thing you're making videos about. Just as I like the fun stuff like ferrofluids or DNA extraction, I also enjoy seeing you bash homeopathy, discuss a controversy like nuclear energy and make more complicated chemical experiments in your lab.

Keep em coming, we love your channel!

  • Just came to the realisation that I should get more of a life, as this video will surely be the high point of my day... Perhaps going to the market for strawberries will be interesting too! Wish me luck.

P.S. We missed you, Dr. Power... muahahaha!

  • EAT IT!

    Welcome back!

(I'm totally doing this experiment at home)

  • I love your videos. You teach this older guy new tricks! Sometimes it's hard to hear all your comments without mounting some earphones, though. So I hope future videos will have more consistent sound levels. Thumbs up, for sure! Thanks!

  • where the heck have you been. missed your videos lately man. Keep up the awesome. BTW i have used Your homeopathy videos to prove many people retarded. Many people I know used to buy into it. It is nice to have some one on the same page as when it comes to "magic" VS science.

I remember My 8th grade science showed me this teacher showed me this one. one of my heros.

Thanks for the new sound!! we really appreciate your vids... but we will love them even more as the quality improves! Thx again

  • Hey Myles, is drinking alcohol easily distilled from rubbing alcohol?

  • I actuallt let out a little falsetto scream when I saw this on my page!

  • @SyncopatedProgress I was excited too... Couldn't quite rock the falsetto though XD

  • Nice Video, I think I will send it to my old undergrad bio lecturer for 1st year 1st semester prac lab where two main parts of the unit are Cells and genetics.

Way to promote science and learning

  • You can extract my DNA any time bro ;)

  • I always feel incredibly intelligent after watching your videos.

If only you made them everyday!

  • How do you know you have nuclear DNA and not have any mDNA mixed in with it?

  • @saxmanchiro It would be both I beleive. along with some of the r stshuff too

  • @saxmanchiro I think you meant mRNA but isolation from DNA and mRNA would probably require gel electrophoresis since mRNA is much shorter and less heavy than DNA :/ I'm not sure haven't done this for a loooong time

  • @coldchipsspoils No I meant what I said, mDNA or Mitochondrial DNA.

  • Impressive! Did the same experiment at uni but not with household equipment!

  • This experiment is very intelligently designed. :D When you held the chopstick with DNA in front of you I thought you were gonna eat it!

I did something similar years ago, but we extracted DNA from a thymus and dried the DNA. Was quite cool.

@funkycoder1 not chromosomes but sequences of DNA.

  • Awesome video! I would have never believed that there is that much DNA in those strawberries, and that it is that simple to get it out.

Thanks for your videos! I'm glad you're back on YouTube!

  • yay! fun! science!

  • Nice! Can you do a followup video where you show gel electrophoresis? So you can show there are actually chromosomes in that snot (and appear as the characteristic bands)

  • ...so you're not going to eat the strawberry DNA?

  • finally :) keep it up

  • Yay a new science video! And everything is always fucking wonderful!!! :D

  • :D
