K, prolly heard this a million times. You are going to be rick kid if you keep this up. Freaking great job on this. Would love to hear your versions of some Gilmore.
I would explode if someone starting playing LVS at my school, especially if they played anywhere near as well as you did. For the most part, kids at my school only listen to rap and and pop.
I've been playing since I was 8, and I just turned 13 :/ And I'm better than my brothers than they were at the same age, and you can see my brothers play on my videos. It's a bad cover though.
Dont feel bad pick scrapes are not as easy as they look. If not dont right they look kind of foolish and sound terrible. Yours was ok it didnt throw you off, which is good. Watch Eddie to learn the right way. Good job.
Job well done, I've been a Rush fan since I was 2. I started a Rush Tribute Band and we play the whole Hemispheres album. We still need more work, but we manage very well with just me ''drums'' & guitar. :)
Haha at 3:10 you look annoyed xD your like 'Goddamn bassists, trying to steal my spot light ...' But its Geddy Lee so who cares haha, sucks that alex lifeson stands out less than the best drummer in the world and one great bassist/multi-instrumentalist on stage, but back to real life haha, nice cover man, im 16 just saw them at the Ottawa bluesfest and I just can't stop listening, I have Tom Sawyer figured out (on guitar) but my ultimate goal would be La Villa Strangiato, good job man.
how long have you been playing. I have done this song before with my band and i never play the solo it was actually written because im too lazy to learn the whole thing so my hat is off to you. if it only took you a few days-a week . How long did you play each day and nice guitar playing, and nice guitar, what kind of amp were using and great job.
No offense, but looking at you, you don't seem like someone who would like Rush, especially this song. I'm glad to know there are other young guys like me that can really appreciate stuff like this. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the feedback! I think he actually uses a volume pedal though, if you watch a live video of it. At the time, I didn't have a volume pedal and sucked at using the volume knob, so i just kinda played the notes without volume swells.
First of all, nicely done on the performance and passion.
2nd, good on you for finding musical inspiration outside the realm of mainstream. Which by now is a well oiled machine.
3rdly, i'm almost 40 and when i read you mention Lifeson and Howe in the same sentence...it made me think that maybe I have some kids out there that i dont know about lol.
dude i like watch this everyday and try to get ur fingering and im making some progress! man but i like the way u move ur fingers they like flow nicely and im trying to get that movement good job again by the way
That's good! Yeah, being able to play with fluidity allows you to play with more feel and play faster at the same time, which Lifeson, Steve Howe, and many guitarists are able to do. And once again, thank you very much:)
Awesome job Eli. The first solo in this song is probably my favorite guitar solo of all time and you did an excellent job with it. I used to play guitar 20-25 years ago(im 45 now) and I knew almost every rush song on guitar, but I gotta say, you play this better then I ever did...especially the solo's. Keep up the good work! :-)
First of all, great job on the song dude, thought it was pretty freakin sweet. Second, I don't know if you know this, but at the beginning on those bends, the ones that sound kinda like violin, the ones that bend from the 7th fret on the 3rd string (G) and the 10th fret on the 2nd string (B), the way Alex Lifeson plays those is he uses VOLUME SWELLS, just look it up, u just increase the volume from being quiet to loud as u slowly release the bend. I hope that helps, I am 15, and can play it too
Thanks a lot man, I appreciate it. Yeah, I do, and I bought a volume pedal for those swells. I've tried to do those with the volume on my guitar, but I'm not too good at it.
@indi626 No problem, and yeah i know what you mean it's pretty hard to reach the volume control and use it while playing, but the volume pedal is a great idea/method. I like your guitar too by the way. And you have a nice tone for the song. And I'm not gonna lie you kinda look like Alex Lifeson!
Indi, I just stupidly misread that. My mistake. I really wish I could play like that. I'm what you would call "musically challenged" lol I'm a 4 chord guy.
Haha, it's fine man. And thanks, I used to be like that, and then I learned the 'Stairway to Heaven' solo, and then kinda progressed as more of a lead guitarist from there;)
Pretty sick job dude, great band to listen to, GREAT guitarist to take inspiration from. Alex is my favorite and damn, it's been weeks since I've played this song in full...I gotta play it soon. Try Xanadu (also by Rush...one me and some buddies are playing alot), that guitar part is phenomenal. Get your band to keep a steady pace for you and rock this song at a show, I guarantee people will flip their shit. Keep on rockin man. Peace.
Thank you very much!!! Yeah, he's pretty amazing, and yeah, they're a great band to listen to. And i'll be sure to work on Xanadu, that guitar part is indeed awesome.
Yea, can't stand competition freaks. I've ran into a couple in my time plaing, but they're not worth the time and you end up passing them up leaving them behind in the dust.
Yeah, it sure does. And yeah, I see what you mean. Lots of times guitarists just try to be better than each other, and approach playing like a competition, instead of just enjoying playing and sometimes helping each other out.
Didn't know you were supposed to pick slide that part of the solo, been trying to figure out what to do. Thanx man. Now I know what to do for that part. Great song. Great Cover!
Thank you very much! As for the pick slide, do not follow my example, considering that was a terrible one, but search "Rush La Villa Strangiato Live 1978" here on Youtube, click on the first vid that pops up, and go to about the 5:09 mark for a good example!
Boy, you are awesome, only 13 years old and you play a guitar very good. I love the way you play it. You can look at Jones Brothers, they play a guitar like SHIT and they hold a guitar and jump like a monkey.
I think they need to see you so you can teach them how to play a guitar.
I do have a teacher, but I taught myself this song (besides the clean part of the first solo, which I used a tab for). As for the pinkie, do you mean just in general in the solo, or in a specific part?
hell yeah, guy. this is great! i was 13 back in god knows when, 1982, playing this stuff, and not nearly as well as you! anyway, carry the torch my friend. you're definitely rockin out in a way that'd make alex proud. it's awesome to see new generations of RUSH fans!
kinda doubt they'll bring it back next tour after all the tours they jammed it, but dude, just buy RIO and R30, hook up the home theater, crank it and sit REAL REAL close to the TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
has someone recognized and rightfully rewarded your hard work and determination with that SWEEEEEET Les Paul Studio or do paper routes pay a lot more than in 1982!?!?!?
lol Actually I just saved up my allowance for a long time to cover most of the damage:) By the way, my "A Farewell to Kings" cover should be up soon, so be sure to look for that!
Alex himself has got to see this, and surely would be loving it. I wonder if any staff in the audience (like a music teacher) even understood the significance of what this youn man has achieved by playing THIS song!?!?!? Also, if he didn't WIN, I want a word with the judges, or at least a moment out back in the alley...lol!!!
Thank you! I'll definitely post some more 70's and early 80's Rush covers (Fly By Night, A Farewell to Kings, Permanent Waves, etc.) soon, so stay tuned!
Don't be hard on yourself, you are only 13!!! Remember, Neil Peart didn't even start playing the drums until he was your age and look at him now! You are going to be an amazing musician, don't ever give up your dream because you have an amazing talent!!! Please post more vids because you really are an inspiration to all musicians out there. You play just as well as some cover bands that I heard over the years who are adults (Iam an old lady! LOL) Thank you for sharing this with us!
Young Eli that was pretty sick. One thing, get yourself a Ernie Ball volume pedal, Carbon Copy analog delay and swell in the opening lead parts and your in business, keep it up. A+
Thanks! I'll be sure to get those pedals. I wasn't able to play the first three minutes of the song, because each act had to be 2-3 minutes long, but I told them cutting out any more of the song would be a bit too much. Once I get those pedals, I think I'll upload a new version.
nice job man, this song is hard as hell, and the fact that you were playing rush should merit an insta-win. you should try some dream theater next time though

That was AWESOME! As a hard core Rush fan you blew me away and gave me goosebumps. I cannot believe you are only 13 years old - WOW!!!
P.S. > I hope you won the talent show.
