I used an old advis 16" crash I found, sounds darker than a zil bel but less bright it's ok. I despise any b8 cymbal though... Oh! And if you come upon an old firebell or school bell those work GREAT!!!!! I has one and love it :)))))))
Sounds nice! I try not to hit my cymbals hard, but it sucks cause I like splashes and those tend to be thin and crack easily. Plus I'd very much like a crash cymbal so I could just use my ride/crash cymbal solely for riding.
I don't know...John Bonham said that he used Paiste because they were the only cymbals he couldn't break. And I've gotta say: I have never cracked a cymbal. I've bent small splashes. How are you guys breaking these cymbals?
Paistes are worth it, dude. Even the PST5s are a better value than, say, Zildjian ZBTs. You *may* pay a little more for them, but they last. Hell, a lot of pro drummers still use Alphas (like Joey Jordinson), because they sound great and the prices are fair. Zildjians are just too expensive and not very good (in my opinion).
yeah id just watch out for the splashes, bigger tightened ones break, i broke mine and the other splash snapped on my snare rim so, splashes from paiste will break but other than them i havent broke one yet, and im a fairly hard hitter myself
I am a Grohl-influenced rock drummer, and i had a Paiste Alpha 16" crash for nearly 5 years. So that's 5 years of being whaled on and once even stuck into a brick wall....
I still play it but it has just developed a *tiny* crack on the edge.
I had a Zildjian 19" Medium Thin (avedis) and i had it replaced after 2 months or less because of a design fault.
that's mostly because paiste's cymbal weights differ from other companies. what would be condsidered heavy in the paiste range, would be more like a medium in the zildjian. i've cracked plenty of paiste cymbals as well. 5 infact. whoops.
well, ZBTs are made of B8 which is the same material as 2oo2s and RUDES and GIANT BEATS.
Would you say a K custom or A custom is much more durable than a 2oo2?
If you say no, than you're contradicting yourself, because if materials play that big a role in cymbals durability than a 2oo2 could break just as easily as a ZBT.
i thought i heard somewhere that the beginner cymbals were made to be more durable since they would be played by (obviously) the beginning drummer that would have bad technique.
thats probably why they sound so bad.
either way, all cymbals (with the exeption of thin crashes) should probably last about the same amount of time
no man! aint rubbish! i really want to mean that my cymbal broken it was history for me, so im trying to do the zil thing whit it! hehe dont missunderstand me!
oh man ive sabed! i have a 18 inch avediz crash and is destroyed! for me it was rubbish but now i can use it as a zil bel, very good advice! great way to recycle the cymbals!
Sounds very cool, Craig. Gavin Harrison plays some home-made bells too. I have a Sabian 16" Saturation crash that's developing a crack, so maybe I'll try this out. Did you and Granddad use a bandsaw to cut it down, or....?
we cut it out with tin snips. it took a while so take your time. we filed the edges so it was not so sharp. the end rusult was suprisingly good. i would Definitely recommend doing this.
I'm doing the same thing. But i have the 18 inch so its thicker and its taking soooooo long to cut. But what did you fill the edges with? I'm really nervous i'm gonna slice of my finger, the edges are so sharp.
i did this with my zxt 16 inch thin crash that broke, its like 9 inches now and has the "bell-ish" tone to it, its pretty neat, b ut i already have the 9 inch zil bell i got from a friend for $30 :p
I think im going to do this with a ride cymbal i cracked. Its a Paiste Alpha Power ride and weighs a fucking ton! the rest of the cymbal is ruined, but the bell still sounds amazing and im going to salvage it1
actually pretty good sounding

paiste makes the best chinas
1000000jackpot777 2 years ago
This is my own opinion:
Best Chinas: Wuhan/Sabian XS20s
Best Hi-Hats: Zildjian A Custom Mastersound Hats
Best Crashes: Basically ALL high-end crashes
Best Rides: Various Sabians, couple Piastes, and a couple Zildjians.
GuitarHeroN00b 2 years ago
guys:
Meinl makes good chinas
zildjian makes good crashes
sabian makes good hihats
paiste makes good rides
ok? now shut up with "oh this cymbal sux this is the best blah blah blah blah blah"

they cant break paistes because most of peistes lines (even their pro ones) are made of b8 bronze which is stronger than b20
Ramen1020 2 years ago
I don't get how people can break cymbals in the first place. The worst thing I've done to a cymbal was bend up some cheap little Sabian B8 splash.
abaddon5 2 years ago
yea if you have technique you shouldnt break cymbals often (that goes for hard hitters too)
ive had my 14" b8 thin crash for a year and i hit it pretty hard
Ramen1020 2 years ago
I've only broken a K Custom splash due too a crappy production glitch. There was a weakness in the lathing.

or maybe make like a funny shaped cymbal

It really degrades the sound if you cut out the cracked part or when you drill the end of the crack.
abaddon5 2 years ago
that's mostly because paiste's cymbal weights differ from other companies. what would be condsidered heavy in the paiste range, would be more like a medium in the zildjian. i've cracked plenty of paiste cymbals as well. 5 infact. whoops.

Ramen1020 2 years ago
no, any cymbals can last years and years without breaking with proper technique.
The material doesnt necessarily make it any less durable.
if you have bad technique an A is just as easy to crack.
thebazooka88 2 years ago
wrong. A, K and Zs will break just as easily with bad technique or bad mounting.
ZBTs do sound alot worse, but theyre not any less durable.
thebazooka88 3 years ago
wow that sounds awsome. i did somthing like that with a zbt china.
