@gonzoredux not even close to being a stalinist...absurd lol. its called delivery of valid points.... truth is hard to refute no matter how great a debater or how cerebral you are. he was soundly defeated as all neo-con rhetoric is sheep think
@runelord37 It has been a while since I watched this, but it is a great credit to Mr Hitchens that he is able to maintain his wit and composure while Galloway appeals to the most baboon-like in the audience. Call that "cerebral" if you want.
The behaviour of much of this audience is a disgrace, more worthy of trash tv like Jeremy Kyle or Jerry Springer; not the serious subject matter involved. Pationate disagreement is one thing but these people who are supposedly academics in their twenties and thirties are behaving like yobs. It would be interesting to see how many of them could stand in front of a crowd and have a heavy debate in the way Hitchens and Galloway have. Why isn't the moderator, moderating them?
Very well said. Some people will clap for anything.
I personally wasn't a fan of Bush. But sometimes all you have to do is say his name or "Cheney" or "oil" or "Haliburton" around certain youngish people (who tend to describe themselves as leftists, socialists, progressives) and they go rabidly apeshit. A quick descent into dogmatism and suddenly it's the end of conversation. They're no better than the people they claim to hate.
I'M a progressive and I think that they're full of shit.
cfibb- Thankyou- Im no fan of George W Bush but ive spent time contemplating my reasoning for that. As you say, a lot of people, particularly young people say rediculous things because it is popular to do so- allmost like a fashion trend. Its the same with communism. Ive noticed a worrying number of otherwise educated western youngsters proudly proclaiming themselves reds when they have never had the experience of living under such regimes. Regards
"You're a court jester!" lmao! Is that all he can think of to say? haha I agree with davidesugar. He's just looking for ways to make the crazy liberals whoop in his favor.
The most opprobrious, disgusting, and uncivil audience behavior I've ever seen. Way to represent New York! Now to their credit they did appear to be young but they've obviously no clue to what it means to be courteous of other view points.
yes im also disgusted since im from NYC.But what can you say about the majority of youth today who has to endure horrendous television, incredibly hideous music and shitty movies all to go along with remarkably unethical news media all this pumping crap liberlaisim into their brains.
I absolutely agree, but they respond positively to it, do they not? You don't see many modern teenagers upset over the fact that they're being fed music and television of little, or no cultural value. They are subjected to an existence of indiscriminance, that encourages stupidity and mediocrity. Every parent, and generation, is to blame for its progeny.
Absolutely agreed on every part of that comment, its as if the parent or parents themselves will do anything to keep the children happy even if it means the happiness they recieve will only make and trun them into dullards and misconcepted idiots in the future.
Hitchens wins this hands down. Hitchens answers all of Galloway's questions but Galloway fails to return the favor. Instead he brings up Barbara Bush. WTF?
of course not. it just concerns me the israelis are bring a holocaust onto the palestinians and the only people defending them are the freedom fighters Hamas.
Hamas don't kill Jews; as you put it. Their defensive war is against Israel. And the fact is; they don't retaliate against anyone else. Unlike Israeli government who pre-emptively kill and have killed the men women and children of Palestine and Lebanon, regularly and have used the term "holocaust" while doing it. Now go back to your porn filled crummy little apartment and read you copy of Mein Kampf. Prick.
a holocaust? here are some facts about the holocaust in palestine:
average life span in gaza 1947: 53
In 2007: 71
Population of palesine in 1974: 955,00
In 2007: 5 million
The Israelis have managed to have a reverse holocaust in which lives of palestinains have actually improved and numbers have gone up.
The holocaust in europe wiped 30% of the worlds jews off the map. how dare you say there is a holocaust going on in palestine. you are just a JEW HATER. plain and simple. now fuck off
You may care to know that Hitchens whom you called "a great american", which he is not since he is of british descent, is a communist or Marxist if you will.
Maybe you'll inform yourself on matters before making unqualified inflaming comments.
I know he is an american citizen and that was not what my remark was aimed at. I was talking about him in cultural terms, he spent most of his life in Britain where he was born and educated (Cambridge university). But the fact remains that he still considers himself a Marxist which you can call communist if you want. BTW George Galloway has a lot of Jews amongst his closest friends, i.e Ilan Pappe, to name a prominent example. But I'll just concede that Hitchens is an American .
galloway can have a load of jewish friends but he panders to muslims and left wingers to the lowest common demonator and uses anti-semitism. you know this to be a fact.
If you'd ask him he would answer differently, he once said that despite the disdain for him in the left political spectrum he still views himself in marxist categories and holds Trotsky in high regards, but I agree he is not a Marxist, as a Marxist I find that his newfound pro-imperialist tendencies clearly disqualify him as a Marxist.
you mean like the 2 british intelligence agents arrested by Iraqi police, disguised as Iraqis carrying guns and explosives, then violently rescued by Brtish troops in 2003?
Yeah, GG is the undoubted winner here. Its a real shame this, as i have a great deal of admiration for CH, especially his forthright views on the evils of organised religion and fundamentalism. But his reasoning for his out of character support for the Iraq war is just so flawed and incoherent as to be truly laughable.
His point, as i take it, is Mrs Bush's racism and snobbery - she claimed refugees from New Orleans whose "care of" address was an Astrodome shelter in Texas had "never had it so good". Quite insulting under the circumstances i reckon, but unsurprising coming from the woman responsible George jnr and Jeb's moral fibre!
Hitchens never defended Barbara Bush, and speaking of her comments has nothing to do with the US's handling of Katrina. It just seemed like a a cheap soundbyte by GG to get applause.
I guess the general point was that Hitchens has (far from being the Trot he once was) has gradually come to defend a certain political ilk which is certainly not what he set out to do.
I agree the connection in GG's point was loose but, as you say, it certainly paid off.
at times it is shameful to listen to Mr. Galloway goes to Washington.

hitchens studied philsophy and politics at oxford in the late 60s.
amy goodman studied anthropology at a small liberal arts college.
hitchens was at the top of his class and was a marxist at the time, he also organized for MLK rallies/support on campus.

The bad news is, there's going to be a huge civil war in Iraq and millions of people are going to die.
The good new is, Amy Goodman is going to write a best-selling book blaming the whole thing on Jewish Republicans.
