The glass trick works because of air pressure. All the air around us it weighing on us you can't feel it because it has always been there. How air pressure pertains to this trick is that while the paper forms a seal the air pressure outside the cup pushes in all directions, inculding up, this pressure is greater than the weight of the water, air pressure is 14.7 pounds per square inch, and there for as long as the paper holds the water won't fall.
