Fuck Traktor scratch that software takes all the skill out of the artform known as DJing. My main beef is with the auto beatmatching function. Auto beatmatch is for people who don't know the history of DJing or disregard it because using a laptop is easier. You will never be a DJ in the true sense unless you can do sets on the fly; pick songs on the fly, play to the crowd, blend records, choose records which can mix into eachother etc. Serato is a tool, Traktor is a cheat.
Real DJs know how to play to a crowd, they don't beatmap the songs they are going to play and know what order they are going to play the songs in before hand.
No. Choose the next song your going to play (based on audience reaction to other songs) while the current song is playing and mix it in before the currently playing track finishes. It's a skill alot of new "DJs" have not developed.
The point i think that we're all missing here isthat it sounds GOOD. I HATE seeing guys just use there laptops as well, but as long as there rocking a sexy show i'm fine for the moment. HOWEVER it CAN be duely noted that pc djing doesn't require an assload of talent unless your an upper end dj using MIDI controls. I'd pay to see Surkin no doubt. But I only consider him a good producer/good pc dj for right now.
beatmatching isnt talent, as im pretty sure alot of top end dj's already know how to do it.
can you use ableton like he does? no, it actually requires talent. please stop saying that it requires more skill to use a deck rather than a laptop because its an argument you obviously cant argue if youve never learnt the software through and through.
Actually, its a subject i can argue the hell out of because i happen to be an ableton user. As I said: as long as it sounds good i'm FINE.
AND if you completely gathered what I was saying, it was that I hate seeing JUST a LAPTOP, and no MIDI controller. A pet peve. Like I said, it desn't require an assload of talent UNLESS you're an upper echelon DJ.
Pretty black and white that I'm actually a fan of Surkin. AND PCDJ'ing
A true DJ uses vinyl? And what that makes photographs cheating too? Are you using dial-up? And power steering? Do you ride a penny farthing? Most of your CDJ vinyl DJs have been using BPM counters for years anyway. If he's produced it in Live or anything with rewire you're probably hearing his tracks straight from his DAW, which is going to sound amazing. Can't wait to see him NYE.
i've just seen surkin live at creamfields fest and i can say he rocks, he's done a good set, whatever he uses on stage. of course he's not at a high level, for me he'll become a "true" dj when he will show he can rock with real decks also, but for the moment he's not bad
justice use decks too, and so do all other decent djs. surkin uses ONLY ableton, do you get the point? give him decks and a mixer, WITHOUT a screen telling him bpms and cut points. There's plenty of kids that use ableton, it's just software, and i wrote that this is OK for the mo, surkin is funny and his sets are cool, i paid to see him in Spain and i will pay again when it comes back here, but i must say also that i will not see him as a hi-level dj till he wont use some "adult" dj stuff.
justice played many sets using cdjs and mixers, you can find many videos in the net. that stuff is obviously easier to use than vinyl decks but surely less than ableton. i am just saying that a dj that uses Always and Only ableton can make funny sets but he will NOT be considered to have 100% dj skills till he shows he has them. such as a digital photographer that NEVER used a reflex hasn't probably a good reputation
what? i am a dj and i know it, but i think Everybody knows it since many djs use it. i don't use it cause those knobs are tiny for me. so what's the point?
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT SOFTWARE HE USES WHEN MIXING LIVE? Is he using Reality or Ableton or something? Looks like one of those programs with a midi controller plugged into the USB. Does that sound about right?
You don't NEED one but it is reallyyyy helpful. Considering all the multitasking you have to do as a DJ, not having a midi controller would make things tough.
attention to hyde1970. how can you not hear the skipping track underneath ghetto obsession? hes obviously just started mixing out of the previews song, using an infiniti skip (which will traditionally fade out as the main part of the new song kicks in)
surkin is an AMAZING producer as well as a pretty decent DJ. trust me, hes not just hitting play on itunes
True, but do you not find it really underwhelming seeing a DJ with just a laptop on stage? I'm cool with laptop and some mixing equipment up there, but situations where they may as well just be hitting play on itunes do annoy me, that's better left for wedding DJs.
I can't answer that question because I personally have never seen a DJ use just a laptop. I agree with your statement about "just hitting play on itunes." I have seen many FAIL djs that do pretty much that, and they can go to hell. But the thing is, that never sounds good, and never will. If they are playing a prerecorded mix, then they can go to hell aswell. But for me, I don't care about what medium a DJ uses to play a live set, if it is truly live and improvised, and good, then whatever.
No really, I want to know why 'grow up' was an appropriate reply to my comment. If it makes it any easier I could explain why I don't like DJs that do live sets from a laptop? Not that you would need an explaination before you try and patronize me.
I just replied to another comment explaining that. And you make a throw away comment based on your assumption that my comment had no thought behind it?
When it comes to composition and initial mixing, I have absolutely no problem with using computers, I use reason myself, but on stage it just seems lazy.

yeah it takes a lot of talent to get 2 tracks to play at the same BPM and mix each other!
I dont give a fuck if you use traktor, ableton or vinyl..I care about what your playing.

what deck lol.... anyways computer is the future of djing
MrRoboto101 3 years ago
just. WHAT THE FUCK. actually, djing with a comp is "faking" it. Some years ago, it was the same with CDs vs Vinyls. Now it's CDs vs Computer.
Stop saying he isn't a "true" dj, and try to do things just like him. Justice, Para-One, Tom Deluxx and co, they aren't djs ? Yay !

Man. Justice uses Ableton Live and midi controllers live.
Do you know that there are BPM counters on decks ?
It's not harder to mix on decks, just different, and for me, it's less creativity and possibilities.
" adult dj stuff " : stupid ?

who gives a fuck if it sounds good, you go and do it then with decks and a mixer if you're so fucking brilliant
