  • "Cotton Eyed Joe" was a euphemism for distilled liquor. ;)

  • Exactly, Damn sothern country players made it into some big joke. Bruce Molsky for example knows how to play a song like this the way it is supposed to be.

  • You don't understand. Folk songs and old-time songs are never sung the same way. The way he sang is pretty close to the traditional. Old-time songs usually have over a 150 different variations, Old Joe Clark for example. The way you have heard it, is the changed and wide known version. Usually it's sang "I'd been married 40 years ago if ain't been for a man call Cotton Eyed Joe"
