Movie was horrible... I love Noir movies, I love superhero movies, THIS WASN'T anything like a good movie. This was so bad, you could tell someone all the bad points and they could watch it and still be shocked how bad this is...
I'm pretty sure we qualified that statement with the fact that Frank Miller is a junior director, and we can understand his decision to change the faceless element. Hitchcock was a MASTER director. Not a fair comparison, D!
your geek news: you are free to discuss the visual qualities of the movie, and there are several. but referring to who the characters were... shame oin you! you know zilch about them! and worst of all, you don't care.
If the producer wanted The Spirit to be like Sin City, why didn't they go to Rodriquez, the guy who was in charge, instead of Miller, the guy who was just there to help make sure it looked liked his book?
Does no-one know who Brecht was? Look him up on Wikipedia; he invented a theatrical style and this film follows it almost exactly.
You can't really judge it by normal theatrical styles because it doesn't follow them. Ask someone who knows about Brecht because I don't have enough space here to tell you. Suffice to say that there are many methods that Brecht used in his plays that Miller has used in The Spirit
Brecht, Stanislavski, it doesn't matter. Film is a different medium. Brecht may work in theatre, but cinema is century old medium that has been tried and tested. If you try and reinvent the wheel you could end up looking stupid. Like this movie. Now I am not saying don't try new things but Frank Miller is a novice. Genius comic book creator but a 1st time solo director. Walk before you run.
If you're going to generalise Film into one medium with only one definitive style, then you'd have to do the same for Theatre. The style of something has a huge impact in how you judge it: you can't judge a 'normal' film like a musical film, why is Brecht's style the exception?
Regardless, there are different styles within Film that also take their influence from Theatre - see any musical or Shakespearian film ever made.
bertoldt brecht? what does he have to do with this movie?
the movie is stylish, and mostly experimental. but shouldn't be called the spirit. why not then calling the main character "hamlet" or "robin hood" then? this is not will eisner's the spirit!
Brecht came up with his own style of Theatre Production - this movie uses a lot of them.
Y'know the henchmen wearing a black T-Shirt with their names written on in white? That's Brecht.
The use of movement - like the intro where he runs really slowly, and the seductive dance by the French lady is also Brechtian.
I don't have time to go into a lot of it, but I'd argue that because the movie uses a lot of Brechtian concepts, it cannot be described as anything else.
P.S. I am a huge Frank Miller fan and Will Eisner fan and have followed everything they have ever done. But I am also a filmmaker and at the end of the day wether we like it or not films should be about story and character first and foremost and those aspects have been neglected in the movie and your review. FOR SHAME!!!!!
Have the balls to have faith in the source material. Robert Rodriguez took a chance and look what happened. Frank Miller did not have faith in audience members intelligence and Will Eisner's LEGENDARY characters. DON'T SHOW THE OCTOPUS!!!!!!!!
Nope, this movie was a big shitty mess. Frank Miller is out of his depth and clearly not ready to direct alone. I hope he goes back to graphic novels.
I'm a huge spirit fan, i managed to get invited to a preview screening of it. I love the comics, i pay alot of money for the archive books and have alot of the new spirit issues. Now I have been supporting the film for ages, i actually really enjoyed this film, a whole lot. Its sure not sin city, but its definately cool, i love the look, and the characters, i mean its over the top as hell, but read frank millers stories, its all there. I will definately see this again and buy the dvd.
actuality i enjoy this movie is watchable one too i i love sam jackso drees like a nazi hey i hate Nazi but this one was weird buy cool hahahaha WTF :/but the movie was good

how come no one liked this.
if you think about it, this movie was made to be amusing, fun, and hilarious. and guess what.
IT IS.
not every movie is meant to be groundbreaking. this was made to have fun, and be fun to watch. this movie is awesome and unique.
He gets to play out a whole bunch of corny jokes and scenes that he knows he couldnt do in a serious movie.

It was visualy appealing.
The basic story was just terrible.
The characters were just stupid.
IF the movie wasnt camp and actualy treated serious than it might have been cool.
TOTALY disrespectfull to the source material.
