Sounds like you've heard a few half truths. Slipknot have ALWAYS hated being associated to "nu-metal", especially just because they use a DJ. There's not a single thing in slipknot that lines up with Nu-metal (korn, limp bizcut, linkin park etc) however due to mass exposure and success they have been permanently pigeon holed. Joey Jordison has always been open with the fact he absolutely loved korn when he first heard the first album.

yeah agree'd but thats what got them noticed and if they got rid of the "gimmic" part of the band, be it numbers onstage or face masks, then more than likely they would have been just another good band that never made it. Gimmicks aside with slipknot. i think they have thier place and are good at what they do no question. Kon included in thier day. not to sure about they current stuff but i guess it all has its place.

Agreed mate but problme is with saturated markets you need something to stand out. Slipknot were the complete package.there was no one that sounded like them, had the market-ablity like them and had the goods to work as hard as them in the number one spot commercially. You gotta keep in mind the music industry is not controlled by the artists its controlled by faceless corparations.For a band to be able to earn enough to play to write full time and eat it inolves signing a contract with THE MAN!

Take it all away and they are still the same guys. the 9 of them are the dynamic that maks up slipknot. Its thinks its safe to say they have all doen thier own thing as good, allbeit different, but as good musicianship wise to say those guys aint just marketing hype. in this day in age you cant have one without the other at that level because it becomes a business out of anyones control. Every band faces that with a level of sucess. thats the music industry. "Sad but true", no pun intended!

the other thing to consider is the fact the "music" industry is not longer just about Audio. Its video as well thanks to technology. The day great music was the only importance is long gone. Even metal in a comercial sense is not influenced by what sounds good alone. Its all about a fresh sound and complete marketable package. With out sales being an importance to the people who drive the bands once signed , chaces are youd never have heard half your favorite bands to start with. its a paradox !

I don't know if I agree with that, most of my favorite bands I barely even know what they look like, for example my favorite band is Opeth, I've loved them since 2000, and I think it's only in the last couple of years that they've started having music videos, but they've gotten this far purely on talent, not looks, not gimmicks, not even music videos until recently, but pure fuckin talent.

actually Opeth have been around alot longer than 2 years and the reason you know about them is becasue they are signed to Roadrunner records not becasue they where a local band that you went to school with. Evidently Road Runner marketed the hell out of them when they signed. The reason they were signed was becasue they have there own sound and are very talented at what they do. As is ANY band at that level whether you enjoy thier music or not no mater who it is. thats the point matey.

not at all, i cant imagine they ever thought it was an idea that they all like the sound of and were happy to do something different to get noticed. nor would have Meshuggah id have thought. I doesnt mean the masks and jump suit are what makes the music. all it does is makes them stand out and become instantly identifiable. From an album sales point of veiw thats like hitting the gold mine. Personally Opeth dont do a lot for me. could never get past the morbit angle meets Tool sound but totally

agree they are an awesome band and very talented. I do enoy a good study of them as with tool but they are not a band id put on for enjoyment as much as i would if is was in a writing rut. Opeth is a good band for doing doing stuff youd never have thought of but then thats progressive music, regardless of genre. Still visial is just as important these days.Black metal is a classic example of this.Couldnt imagin Dimmu Borgir being taken seriously if they looked like Korn. i guess it all relative.
