Patanjali's yoga sutras even talk about the acquisition of powers using plants. Ram Dass got his first "glimpse" using entheogens which led him to his guru, who told him that using entheogens compared to using meditation is like comparing plastic fruit to actual fruit.
I would not recommend hallucinogens unless you have guidance by someone experienced in this field, like a shaman or so. In time, meditation will give you the same results, in a manner your mind can still understand the gradual changes and the different perception of the outer world. Hallucinogens on the contrary may cause psychosis because of the sudden change in perception. Good luck!
