The comment was many months ago during the problem that was between us, but i'm pretty sure algerians are our brothers and i have nothing to do against them by the way, i as just angry.
The coolest thing of all about Audie was his humility. He starred in the movie, not to gloat, but to make sure they didn't overplay the events. After the war, he gave all his medals away to friends. When his family had them replaced, he gave those away too. His is the 2nd most visited grave at Arlington after JFK. Every year on his birthday an anonymous person puts flowers on it. It is rarely the same person. He has schools and streets and parks and holidays named after him, and a US Army award.
I served in V-6 division on the Forrestal between '62 and '65 and consider myself a lucky guy to have seen her come and go. She'd have made a far greater memorial than the U.S.S. Intrepid berthed in NYC.
I was 11 years old when she was launched, life sure passes by fast, eh? Too bad about today's world though, Bush has really fucked it up...
Fantastic vintage newsreel of Audie Murphy. In 1955, you couldn't get any bigger or better than Audie -- voted by the Theater Owners of America as the #1 movie star. (And "To Hell and Back" was the top movie for the studio until 1975 - when "Jaws" took the honors.)
Incidentally, in Section 46 at Arlington National Cemetery (and just a few rows behind Audie's grave), is a mass grave/headstone for some of the Forrestal sailors.
14 years later, that ship would have more to worry about than just faulty bearings. (it had a number of old bombs set off after the accidental launch of a missile on deck.)
