It's the graphics chip that makes the difference here not the fact that it's i5 vs AMD. The AMD APU would most likely have much less raw processing power than the i5, but for these games that HD 6000 series radeon in the AMD APU is making it run better.
Comptetition is good. AMD is kicking intels ass now. And you intel lovers should probably look deeper because intel is backstabbing AMD all the time.. They even tried to make Dell not to buy AMD chips. How pathethic is that? Everyone knows if u want to be on top u gotta play dirty. AMD is honest. AMD fusion will be epic.
id still buy intel. Id rather wait till new one comes out. Im a huge fan of Intel. There products are very efficient and very long lasting. And when using intel i have less problems like other people that have amd. I even owned really good video cards and nvidia worked way better. Im sorry to the fans but ati sucks, no offense. Especially mixing ati with intel is a deal breaker. Just saying.
@miketothesupra The level of arrogance here is remarkable. There is almost no difference between Nvidia and AMD anymore. infact, the 6990 outperforms the 590 in higher resolutions, as well as the 6970 outperforming the 580 with higher resolutions. And sense AMD has been working on the bulldozer cores for almost four years now, the decided to skip launching 32 nm process chips until 2011. They are also planning on launching 28nm before the end of 2011 and 12 core processors by mid 2012.
@PatriotGermanEmpire Probably the BEST thing about this APU is the TDP. Not more than 18 Watt is just OUTSTANDING! SO is the APU only for mobile devices or also for desktops? I mean I´d rather get the Bobcat than the Bulldozer ^^.
I need to know more about this test. Give me some more specs than both are integrated. That doesn't tell me nearly enough. How do you measure a APU against a CPU/GPU.
i like how they compared it to previous intel integrated graphics and not the current versions which even surprised me. intel really did their research and there is a reason amd didnt release theirs yet because they realized intels new graphics were actually good this time so now theyre doing redesigns and testing to see if they can get these apus to beat intels new gpu and btw the quality on both those graphics units was bad lol thats why you buy something that has dedicated gpu if you game...
@deathbox731 it's logical... integrate the gpu and cpu on the apu 'cause you have reduced space on the laptop/netbook and you'd need something that saves a little energy. on a desktop you can get a phenom II x6 with a HD 6xxx GPU and you'd have that same thing with the added benefit of lots of space for fans.
i think AMD is going at it the right way... but, hey, i'm a fan, so i don't count. :P
i agree games are for dedicated gpus and desktops. which these are neither. now what i would like to see is efficiency testing, no offense to amd but their cpus for the last 4 generations have not been able to perform as efficient as intel cpus per clock cycle and i know this by doing extensive testing on two systems i own in which both are at the same price point cpu wise and everything else as well. the intel system is about 17% more efficient per clock cycle and when i turn on HT it is 46%
Why AMD asks us to wait so long? This is annoying. Intel is kicking ass so hard. Well my patience is on a brink of fall and if i want see anything good from amd in the next few month i am gonna have to for intel. I was with AMD since amd duron 600.
I say thats a copy of Intel Sandy bridge, and I also think that if you where to compare the AMD APU with the Intel Sandy Bridge the Intel one wold do better.
@QsoftStudios They've been in development for years, Fusion/APUs is the reason AMD bought ATI in the first place. AMD was demoing this against Core i5 just to show how ahead they are in regards to GPU performance, the i5 has a much faster CPU for sure.
It is funny though, that Microsoft and IBM beat both Intel and AMD to creating the first "APU" with the new Vejle chip in Xbox 360 Slim.
@Aaronage1 yeah but they tested it against a previous gen intel integrated gpu, intels current int gpu outperformed the zacate and thats why amd hasnt released it, they are currently redesigning and testing the zacate in order to compete with intels current gen. just imagine what that would do to amd if they released an apu they promised would outperform intel int gpu and it didnt happen. stock would plumett and i would lose a fav brand of cpu. i use both intel and amd, each has their perks.
@decimat777 Ontario/Zacate have been released, they're out in motherboards and laptops already. They haven't changed a thing. This video was made well before Sandy was launched, they only had the old Intel platform to compare to at the time.
Sandy IGP is no better than the GPU in Zacate, it only performs better because its paired with Sandy.
AMD will have 28nm APUs to replace Ontario/Zacate with more cores and improved GPU later this year, that and Llano APUs with 480SP (Zacate is 80SP)
actually amd had an early prototype apu as far back as 2007
quote from pcpro "Combining a CPU and GPU onto one silicon die is a concept AMD pioneered back in 2007, to enable more efficient processing while reducing size, power consumption and manufacturing costs"
@DrGoodwrench64 Actually, AMD uses TSMC and GloFo fabs, not IBM - though it has been speculated that they might in the future.
GloFo, IBM and Samsung are all part of the common platform alliance, they work closely together, but AMD does not use IBM fabs.
It's blatently obvious that Microsoft doesn't design/fab chips, do you really think that is what I was suggesting? Vejle was funded by Microsoft, built to Microsoft's spec, it's going to carry to Microsoft brand...
What's he got there is a fucking DESKTOP vs. a stripped-down laptop. He's probably only got 512MB RAM in it, running in PowerSaver mode, with a Beta or RC-1 video driver.
But, OK, that may be harsh on my part but, I ALWAYS look deeper when I see companies pulling this shit. AMD is no different.
Just remember... If it weren't for Intel, there would be no AMD.
Funny thing is that after all this, AMD still came in second to Intel.
@DrGoodwrench64 Microsoft worked with IBM to create the design, it's built to Microsofts spec of course they're involved.
Globalfoundries (AMDs old fabs) are part of a common platform alliance with IBM and Samsung, so AMDs 45nm process shares a lot with IBMs, but IBM don't fab AMDs chips.
According to Toms Hardware, the 360 Vejle chip is "part produced by IBM and Globalfoundries."
@DrGoodwrench64 You didn't even look at the board they used. It is NOT a desktop mobo, if you have ever opened up a laptop/netbook you would be able to tell the difference(Position of ports + RAM location ). The only difference would be that the lappy was not out in the open with cool air whereas the mobo was.
@Aaronage1 Actually IBM already had some "bizarre chips" that maybe can be considered "APUs" since before the Vejle chip... Chips that use SIMDs combined with a PowerPC core that manages the SIMDs... The GPUs stream processors are SIMD units... Maybe if you search about "System On a Chip" you might find "ancient APUs" ... But your comment is good keep up with the good work of shutting the mouth of these zealots who will do anything to disqualify the "rival company"...

@decimat777 the intel core i5 does include intergrated graphics. the idea of this is to show off the difference between 2 dual core systems with single die intergrated graphics.
@ipullstuffapart well i know it includes integrated graphics but i said they werent created for games, only HD encoding at the most... and of course the integrated AMD graphics are gonna be better cause they make good graphics cards. one of my htpc's has AMD integrated graphics and its awesome! cpu vs cpu + dedicated gpu the i5 would kill that bobcat. i think that they should have compared the atom (pinetrail ver. which has integrated gpu) vs bobcat instead.

@inventorOz84 Fanboys smack proves your ignorance, do what i do and just get whats best on the market for the time. if money is a concern then hell yes go for amd but if not then go intel, believe it or not but intel fixed their pentium 4 booboo and have risen from the depths. oh and guess what the athlon xp is the same thing as the pentium 3 AMD had shared rights with the design. so AMD for at least 4 cpu gens copied intel designs. Intel finally broke away with the pentium 4, which was bad lol.
@decimat777 Thanks for reading my comment and replying to it, but I don't need a history lesson on these companies.

@inventorOz84 yes true true about the competition, its the reason i got my i7 930 for $150 :) as ive always told others i only buy what performs the best on the market so if AMD brings out a cpu that beats intel then hell yes im gonna get it :) !!!!!!
laptops aren't made for gaming - that is why any laptop that is able to handle harcore gaming costs an arm and a leg. I gave up on trying to do gaming on laptops a while ago and just bought myself a desktop, cheaper too.
Thats a bogus comparison, if you look closely the AMD side has the settings turned down lower, and the Intel looks really good because the settings are cranked way up. Sure that would beat my beat my desktop, if you compared it running a game to my machine rendering the same game at iMax quality with all the special effects enabled. I think it's a bad test.
Looks good. Wonder how much a complete Ontario netbook will consume. Would be nice to get the battery life of an atom on an AMD and finally get some 11.6" + netbooks for reasonable prices.
This may not be the breakthrough for Desktop gaming, but it will be much for mobile platforms for sure. I wonder if any affect would occur if you combined the APU with a dedicated graphics card (would that mean an improvement in physics capabilities? considering that now the CPU has the capabilities of a GPU). If true then that would mean a better performance in games with the APU's + dedicated video over CPU's + dedicated video in games with physics engines (which is most games today)
Looks great! I'm loving my single core 1.6 GHz Athlon Neo / Radeon Mobility 3200 netbook, if it could consume less power and last longer on battery I'd be excited.
18 W? A ARM/Tegra system does 1-2W! I wish we would upscale ARM for those systems! But noo, all the completely stupid retards have to cling to their crappy toy OS! Fuck all Windoze lusers!
@hornistsnest I feel like a cunt, i thought i read the 2 intel chips, and i went back and just saw that you wrote azcate and llano, i feel like such a cunt, must have been tired when i read it LOL mybad
How late is AMD to the race, when the i3 is already superior to anything that AMD has out now in the mobile space. Fusion is 3 years late and it is well known that the Sandy Bridge mobile chips have graphics capabilities equivalent to Radeon 5770 in turbo mode. AMD shouldn't even bother to compete with Intel.
1. bobcat + fusion is aimed at netbooks,low-power devices.
that's right it's been built to reinvent the netbook platform, which although sold well, has always lacked an out of order cpu+ powerful enough graphics.
It's not been designed to compete with the i3/i5 m series platform. Thats upto Llano,(Llano will probably offer greater gpu peformance but lack cpu performance when compared to the sandy bridge ).
fusion should provide near 5650 performance, intel is around 5450 +/-
@jprincehouston not true, Sandy Bridge mobile chips ARE NOT DIRECT X 11 capable. Zacate and Fusion chips are. And competition is good, or otherwise Uncle Monopoly would be selling us $1000.00 processor chips in laptops too. The Merger between ATI and AMD will bring more interesting GPU's and APU's soon.
dude, this is bullcrap. show us graphics detail settings on both machines. it's clearly visible that game running on amd system has most (if not all of them) graphic features turned off. on intel machine I can see textures on the floor, lighting effects, shadow maps, NONE of them are visible on amd machine. no wonder that on intel machine fps is choppy. that's cheating (as always with amd, it seems...)
@mikewolf78 They are running the exact settings. This was demonstrated at the Intel Development Forum. No Intel exec, or Intel Developer refutes the superiority of Zacate over the i5 notebook. In fact AMD even gave Zacate to Andtech who doubted the results. They forced new drivers into the i5 and got better cpu results, besting Zacate by a few points. But the Superiority of Zacate still won out. You can check out the article yourself, just google it.
@mikewolf78 Hard to belive! It was tested by other reputable vendors like anand tech! Difficult to swollow for intel fan who paid top $ for his machine. This is next year for intel prepare for it! I have enough listening how AMD sucks! When intel sucked with its P4 cpus it was okey!
@frozencold199 Again not true, the settings were the same. Zacate specs for that machine were 1.6 ghz dual core, while the i5 is a 2.4 ghz 4 core. Get the point? The point is that no one really notices the overall 40 secs itunes conversion time, or 3 min time, the extra $2-300 will get you that extra 3 min. the 1090t is an unlocked processor @4.1 ghz it gets you nearly 85% of the $1000.00 980 Extreme performance. AND you can drop it in ANY AM2+3 mobo. Real world daily use vs Uncle monopoly.
and so what? 12UE igp is ~HD5450, usually less. Zacate's igp isn't any worse, in fact it's faster. Core performance is much in intel's favor yet igp performance crown is on amd side.
@CRAKIZGOOD AMD Zacate is designed to be the competitor of Intel Atom and future Atom derivatives (so y compare with SB?). If Zacate is indeed beating Core i5s, what about Atom? Atom will lose hands-down!
What we are seeing now is the product of really fusing CPU and GPU together, something that AMD has been working on since buying ATI.
AMD Bulldozer is AMD's answer to Sandy Bridge. SB's benchmarks have been leaked...Bulldozer's performance havent been seen yet...so no comparisons can be done
@hadr0n We should see the first devices in Q1 2011. I am sure that AMD will totally show off during CES in January next year. Yes, it's exciting cause we finally get some competition
@minipcpro lol pentium 4 sucked, i7 was intels golden egg. i hope amd can bring something that will perform better this time. this is their first architecture change in 7 years. They are kinda falling behind... intel is already manufacturing 22nm cpus and testing 15nm :/ and amd hasnt even provided a freaking 32nm yet!!! if they dont provide soon enough intel will take over the market :( then we'll all be waiting for nvidia's super cpu to compete with intel. yes nvidia is design cpu's now :)
@tamainemiller How is the bullshit??? This is a APU, it is a CPU & a GPU combined, Your P4 is just a CPU. You would have to be running a dedicated video card any ways, because the built on graphics that came on socket 478's and LGA 775's are CRAP. If you had your P4 running both graphics and processing, your frame rate would be that of a JPEG. Plus, a entire system running off this APU would take the same or even less energy then a P4 all by its self.
@tamainemiller P4 doesn't have integrated graphics directly on the CPU, like the core i3/i5 and amd's APU processor. So your "argument" is pretty much invalid as this video wasn't meant to show off the processor itself, but the integrated graphic processor.(and P4 is shit anyway, can't hold the candle to a processor today with 1.6Ghz)
I think Nvidia's Project Denver will beat AMD Fusion.
But I do like AMD Fusion. :)

I think it's a bad test.

what about the amazon performance comparison? was that bogus too?

Looks good. Wonder how much a complete Ontario netbook will consume. Would be nice to get the battery life of an atom on an AMD and finally get some 11.6" + netbooks for reasonable prices.
ShaTR2 1 year ago
This may not be the breakthrough for Desktop gaming, but it will be much for mobile platforms for sure. I wonder if any affect would occur if you combined the APU with a dedicated graphics card (would that mean an improvement in physics capabilities? considering that now the CPU has the capabilities of a GPU). If true then that would mean a better performance in games with the APU's + dedicated video over CPU's + dedicated video in games with physics engines (which is most games today)

If anything in Apple's short history with Intel were to make them question their hardware roadmaps, these AMD parts are it.
We'll have to wait and see how good Intel's new chips will be, but if they're not much better, what will a company like Apple do?
It's something interesting to think about, if Sandy Bridge can't compete with these parts, the Apple philosophy is in serious danger..

ARM's is much less wattage, probably less performance.
We've got some good competition! :D
Debating whether to go with ARM Cortex a15 or whatever AMD's newest chip would be.

Looks great! I'm loving my single core 1.6 GHz Athlon Neo / Radeon Mobility 3200 netbook, if it could consume less power and last longer on battery I'd be excited.

zacate processor using 40 nm or 32 nm ????
feilongliu 1 year ago
@feilongliu Zacate will be 40 nm. Llano (due 2nd half of 2011) will be 32nm with up to 4 cores.

@hornistsnest not to sound rude but last i checked intel dropped out their research on gpu+cpu, they don't think there is a future for it.

@bastec666 No, you don't sound rude. However, I did not say anything about Intel. My comment was about two AMD Fusion projects, "Zacate" and "Llano."

AMD shouldn't even bother to compete with Intel.
jprincehouston 1 year ago
@jprincehouston
1. bobcat + fusion is aimed at netbooks,low-power devices.
that's right it's been built to reinvent the netbook platform, which although sold well, has always lacked an out of order cpu+ powerful enough graphics.
It's not been designed to compete with the i3/i5 m series platform. Thats upto Llano,(Llano will probably offer greater gpu peformance but lack cpu performance when compared to the sandy bridge ).
fusion should provide near 5650 performance, intel is around 5450 +/-
davedree 1 year ago
@jprincehouston
there is no chance whatsoever that intel sandy bridge can provide 5770
gpu performance. utter rubbish.
davedree 1 year ago
@jprincehouston not true, Sandy Bridge mobile chips ARE NOT DIRECT X 11 capable. Zacate and Fusion chips are. And competition is good, or otherwise Uncle Monopoly would be selling us $1000.00 processor chips in laptops too. The Merger between ATI and AMD will bring more interesting GPU's and APU's soon.
lorllc 1 year ago
dude, this is bullcrap. show us graphics detail settings on both machines. it's clearly visible that game running on amd system has most (if not all of them) graphic features turned off. on intel machine I can see textures on the floor, lighting effects, shadow maps, NONE of them are visible on amd machine. no wonder that on intel machine fps is choppy. that's cheating (as always with amd, it seems...)
mikewolf78 1 year ago
@mikewolf78 They are running the exact settings. This was demonstrated at the Intel Development Forum. No Intel exec, or Intel Developer refutes the superiority of Zacate over the i5 notebook. In fact AMD even gave Zacate to Andtech who doubted the results. They forced new drivers into the i5 and got better cpu results, besting Zacate by a few points. But the Superiority of Zacate still won out. You can check out the article yourself, just google it.

I don't believe thats an i5, also you're not supposed to be playing games on integrated graphics, thats why companies make graphics cards
look at any bench mark and you'll see intel crushes amd for ever cpu
even the i5 750 beats amd's hexicore processor with a much lower clock speed
run a real test like rendering videos not just frame rates on a game and on a web browser
Also amd's test system used a lot lower resolution screen than the so called i5 which increases performance dramatically
frozencold199 1 year ago

@CRAKIZGOOD You're right. He should totally compare it to Sandy Bridge. You know, Sandy Bridge, the unreleased CPU he doesn't have access to…
Lexoka 1 year ago
@CRAKIZGOOD
and so what? 12UE igp is ~HD5450, usually less. Zacate's igp isn't any worse, in fact it's faster. Core performance is much in intel's favor yet igp performance crown is on amd side.

@CRAKIZGOOD
What should he compare? There was none SB around... ;)
Promilus1984 1 year ago
@Promilus1984
he should compare it to any amd FX motherboards
CRAKIZGOOD 1 year ago
@CRAKIZGOOD AMD Zacate is designed to be the competitor of Intel Atom and future Atom derivatives (so y compare with SB?). If Zacate is indeed beating Core i5s, what about Atom? Atom will lose hands-down!
What we are seeing now is the product of really fusing CPU and GPU together, something that AMD has been working on since buying ATI.
AMD Bulldozer is AMD's answer to Sandy Bridge. SB's benchmarks have been leaked...Bulldozer's performance havent been seen yet...so no comparisons can be done

@tamainemiller Tell me, what graphic card u got?
ig33ku 1 year ago
@tamainemiller How is the bullshit??? This is a APU, it is a CPU & a GPU combined, Your P4 is just a CPU. You would have to be running a dedicated video card any ways, because the built on graphics that came on socket 478's and LGA 775's are CRAP. If you had your P4 running both graphics and processing, your frame rate would be that of a JPEG. Plus, a entire system running off this APU would take the same or even less energy then a P4 all by its self.
Num1shark 1 year ago
@tamainemiller P4 doesn't have integrated graphics directly on the CPU, like the core i3/i5 and amd's APU processor. So your "argument" is pretty much invalid as this video wasn't meant to show off the processor itself, but the integrated graphic processor.(and P4 is shit anyway, can't hold the candle to a processor today with 1.6Ghz)
