Dave Frew was the guitar player. Saw a banner at Lark in the Park that said "David Frew is a screw" during the show Gerry jumped into the crowd to get the banner and bring it up on stage as it was Daves birthday... great day
here we are, my mind is at least 12 years ago. Damn the energy, dancing on stage, good music, but the crowed wassnt ready for it yet. Saw them ten times or so, in a pub somewhere in Delft, and Paradiso Amsterdam, but the best where there concerts in Night Town - Rotterdam. Gerard you monkey ! Wake Up !! The world is ready now !!
I went to see them at edwards number 8 in birmingham in the 90's and they were amazing. All the people in the room were invited on stage to sing, items were removed from stage, drumsticks, clothes etc . . . I managed to walk away with Gerard Whelans Towel and have it to this day . . . it was an awesome gig! they should have been bigger! shame!
In Summary - they did a Smash Hits tour (not realising what that meant in the UK - ie. being sell outs and not being taken seriously ever again) and couldn't get a gig to save their lives after that. They were on the verge of Top of the Pops at the time, and it all came tumbling down!!
Most of the band played on an album called 'Gerry Fish and the Mudbug Club - Be Yourself' recently. Check it out if you get a chance...
Wasn't it the Radio One "Freequency Tour"? They got a lot of unjustified crap for that! I remember one night in Liverpool the NME rang up and spoke to a member of the bar staff afterwards to create a bogus review! bad review and they hadn't even been there - as you could tell by the non-set list! Harsh!!!
Seen them in Armagh when I was about 17..round about 1990..pretty deadly, easily the best of upcoming Iish bands at that time ( A House, The 4 of us, Something Happens etc... Good times!!!
Dave Frew is your dad? Tell him Andy said hello! I used to the Fanzine for them back in the day and travelled up and down the UK watching them / selling t-shirts. Had some great times in UK and Dublin! Great band and amazing memories! Hope he's doing well!
Thats class, i saw them in Armagh around about the time of 7 Bands on the up...Ger Whelan was cool, an all the women wanted him...but not as much as me(the women, not me an ger , y'know, he's not my type)..yeh!!!
I remember seeing these years ago where the Village is now. Great live band.
