She is wonderful but I cannot feel sad watching this footage - she is so drunk she can hardly stand and when you consider she is only 56/57 at this point, it is tragic .... xx
@GODHATESWBC i believe she is sick and not drunk..at this point her health had depreciated greatly maybe due to years of hard living and heavy drinking...but I dont think she was drunk here..I believe she was very sick as this appears to be the later years of her life..if she is drunk she was one heck of a performer..
@quietstorm1922 - Yes, you're probably right. I am sorry that I assumed that she was drunk when she was quite possibly battling against her health issues. I was listening to her music again yesterday - her voice was strong to the end.
@GODHATESWBC i believe she is sick..at this point her health had depreciated greatly maybe due to years of hard living and heavy drinking...but I dont think she was drunk here..I believe she was very sick as this appears to be the later years of her life..if she is drunk she was one heck of a performer..
She was great, could have handled herself better, but who knew what her demons were. And as for Elvis, well we love Elvis Presley, with his handsome self.
I am just commenting according to what I am reading on here. So as for Michael Jackson, fabulous, and anyone else who has talent. My sincere hope is that, the artist learn to truly carry themselves properly, and that they are happy, when it is all said and done.
Looking at this clip Big Mama looked in bad shape and her voice isn't the same as it once was but this woman over a 30 plus year period made some of the best blues you would ever hear and it's unfortunate she never got the acolaides she deserved while she was alive.
This is why all us blues bands are out there week after week laying it down to keep the music alive. If not for these forerunners music would not be what it is today! God Bless, the Big Mamas,John Lee Hooker,The Howlin Wolf, Robert Johnson,Muddy, and just to many to name you fill them in, RIP all you bluesmen and women. Thank You for the music you gave us!
That's pretty lame, Rbound827...I hear alotta people say Elvis was doin' a cover of Freddie Bell's "Hound Dog"...where U think Bell got his inspiration from? 'N Y would Elvis do the female's version of tha song, 'n really expose his "thief'ry"...LMAO!!! Come on...let's keep it simple, 'n take all things back to it's roots???
It's not a new song whatever style you sing it in. Its "Hound dog" by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. It's Mama's song because she sang it first. Elvis watered it down for the lame white audience, who cant handle the raw, emotional black blues. Fuck you and everybody who listens to that lame Elvis crap
@personalityson I agree elvis was a total copycat. Many artists copy, but he copied alot. Look at old Jackie Wilson clips and you will see. And for those who want to tell me how much elvis respected Jackie Wilson, save it. I know the stories. He still copied alot. Michael may have copied some, but he made it his own. not true for elvis.
Do you mean Michael as in Michael Jackson? Cause he is in the songwriters hall of fame. He wrote some of the most powerful and influencial songs. Agree Elvis was not a musician just a singer.

FANTASTIC!!!... I wish this clip was longer!... She was beautiful in 52' And in 84'... What a voice! What Presence!... Never got a chance to see her live, But would have loved too!... May You Rest In Peace Mama Thorton!
Can someone pls explain to me her shocking weight loss? I have seen a video of her 1952 hound dog performance, and the visual difference is shocking. I know the performances are 32 years apart, but stil, she looked quite ill here. Was she? Anyhow, ill or not, both were brilliant.
She had cirrhosis of the liver and a heart condition brought on by years of alcohol abuse. It is how she died. She was near death in this video, she died in July 25, 1984 and this was April 14, 1984. She was a real American classic - who is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a disgrace if you ask me...
SoCoPearl: You couldn't be more right!!... She Is A Legend with a blessed voice and a beautiful soul... it is a disgrace she is not in the Hall Of Fame Yet!!... This July/09 It will be Twenty-Five years since her passing... She will then qualify for Hall of Fame status then!!... Let's hope they will inducte her there soon after!!
I thought the procedure for inducting was 25 years after their first song, you don't have to be dead, as I am sure you know, to be in the RRHOF. I just can't believe she's not in there. Her Hound Dog song was released in 1952 (way before Elvis)and was number 1 on the R&B charts for 7 wks. Anyway, I thought for sure she'd be in there. Let's hope you're right and it happens in July '09. Best Wishes to you.
Thanks SoCoPearl:.. You are correct about the procedure regarding inductions into the RRHOF... I can not believe she is not in there yet either!!!... Hopefully the powers that be, Will wake up and see that she deserves to be in the RRHOF... Her induction is long overdue!!!... RIP Mama Thorton!!!
Thanks taildragger51... Mama Thorton certainly was an ORIGINAL!!!... And was ripped off by so many others!!!... She was SOULFUL BLUES PERSONIFIED!!!!...
comeinmykitchen: You're welcome. You seem to know what REAL music is. I saw her with Muddy Water's Blues Band around 1968. She tore my heart out! 100 times more gutwrenching than Janis Joplin, who tried hard to imitate her..but she didn't LIVE the LIFE like Mama did. At that time guys like Howlin' Wolf , Sonny Boy, JLH, Muddy were low on the bill. High up on the list were The Stones, Cream etc...kids thought THEY'D invented Blues.
I can't agree w/ your statement about her being more gut wrenching than Janis, although Janis didn't lead the same life as Willie Mae, she certainly knew sorrow & hard emotional times. It came out in Janis' voice. Janis always gave them credit every step of her way.The Rolling Stones got their name from a 1950 Muddy Waters tune by the same name. They were huge fans of Muddy. I wish people did know where the roots of this music is from.Howlin Wolf is the man!Great taste in music my friend. Peace!
SoCoPearl: I agree with you mostly. Didn't mean to offend anyone..it's all down to personal preference. I admired Janis Joplin's personality....she was a lady with no hate in her at all. Her voice didn't cut it for me but then that was mainly because of her drug problems. She did throw the light onto Etta James and Mama Thornton though. In the 60s i was appalled to see the Stones headlining concerts with the names of Muddy, Sonny Boy & The Wolf lagging behind.
Tail: No offense taken. Interesting your take on not liking Janis' voice because of the drugs,Big Mama basically drank herself to death, & Etta OD'd frequently. If you don't like Janis because of her raspy voice, may I suggest looking on YT at her "Little Girl Blue" performance on the Tom Jones Show 1969? It is representative of her true voice. Perhaps I'll get a convert!! Now I know what you mean about Muddy, et al & the Stones-not getting top billing-Alas the Stones were more popular..
I love big mama but this video is sad to watch. Big mama will always be the greatest. Just like you said, mfh49, she just eminates love and you can hear it in all her music.
Probably hated that Elvis got all the credit for her song... so wrong
