18 was built by Baldwin for the Lake Superior and Ishpeming, and later baught by the Grand Canyon and used until 2002. Then sold to the Mt Hodd and then to the Rio Grande Scenic.
These full dome cars were built by BUDD originally for the SANTA FE railroad. They then went to AMTRAK, then to the ALASKA rr., then to private ownership. Yea!, they have been around!
They are the cars that were on the Alaskan Railroad. And Bob Shank was never the Trainmaster...he wore a conductors hat that for some reason said trainmaster on it. Everything else is pretty acurate...Lovely ride...stop by and check it out!!!!
@DanielVolker Exactamundo! They were first built as ore haulers on the Missabe Range in Michigan. They spent their lives in their original incarnation on the Lake Superior and Ishpeming hauling taconite trains to the ore docks of the Great Lakes. The #18 is a tough little engine and it's sister #34 were built to haul heavy loads. They were overhauled and the 18 did spend much time on the Grand Canyon before being sold to the RGS. To my knowledge, they never were in any service near Mt. Hood.
