This cover version really is lacking. Listen to the original all you Corrs fans. You will realize the desperation in the voice of Phil Lynott. He knew how to write and play from the heart. He was a genius who was able to put his feelings into words and play and sing from his heart. This version lacks all of that. It has no unique style to it like a cover should have. I am not knocking the Corrs just realizing how this song which is a depressing song ends up becoming joyous
I agree, although one can certainly take the spin on it that since it is a posthumous recording that it is perhaps annunciated in a celebratory nature, in the context of Phil's artistic contributions. One should definitely hear the original recording first, though, and be acquainted with Phil's musical career and life as a cultural icon to really decode and absorb the subtle meanings in the music.

You are partly right about the lack of emotion, lads, but, given the legacy of the song i.e. Phil singing the song about his own problems and his tragically passing away relatively soon afterwards means that no cover version will ever do it real justice.
That said, I still think that that's just her way of singing it. It shows just how much talent she has that she can take on this song and produce a version that is halfways decent in a different way.
when phil sings, he does it with all his heart. when you listen to the original you feel the emotions that once he did. this girl is only trying to do her best, the vocals are good, but they don't express any emotions, this is the differance.

phil lynott was a great singer. However Phillip Lynott was one of the greatest bass players and composers/arrangers that has ever lived, personally i feel he was on a par with jaco on a melodic/composition basis!

Yo nunca he escuchado la versión original pero ahora la escucharé. Me encanta The Corrs y si ellos tocan una canción de otro compositor y encima éste ha fallecido es porque será para hacerle un tributo y porque lo considerarán buen música no??, proque si no, porque iban a tocar una canción de un músico que no les atrae??es obvio!

This cover version really is lacking. Listen to the original all you Corrs fans. You will realize the desperation in the voice of Phil Lynott. He knew how to write and play from the heart. He was a genius who was able to put his feelings into words and play and sing from his heart. This version lacks all of that. It has no unique style to it like a cover should have. I am not knocking the Corrs just realizing how this song which is a depressing song ends up becoming joyous

I agree, although one can certainly take the spin on it that since it is a posthumous recording that it is perhaps annunciated in a celebratory nature, in the context of Phil's artistic contributions. One should definitely hear the original recording first, though, and be acquainted with Phil's musical career and life as a cultural icon to really decode and absorb the subtle meanings in the music.

Phil's version of Old Town was laden w/desperation and emotion that this version clearly lacks. This isnt a 'knock' on the Corrs persay, just an observation. They're pop queens, and Phil was a hardened rock n roll legend who had a mountain of vices to deal with. If I never hear this version again, thats fine, Phil's version I NEED to hear from time to time,.. God Bless Phil Lynott. ~ T.Von Swine.

it's always a matter of taste and it's clear that nothing can reach the level of the original version of a song. but does it mean that it's forbidden for others to interpret and cover it, just because it's a dogma that the original should be left as it should be?
Music is supposed to connect people throughout and I personally think that the Corrs knew what "challenge" this song from Phil would be. so it's cool that they at least took the effort to sing it.

You are partly right about the lack of emotion, lads, but, given the legacy of the song i.e. Phil singing the song about his own problems and his tragically passing away relatively soon afterwards means that no cover version will ever do it real justice.
That said, I still think that that's just her way of singing it. It shows just how much talent she has that she can take on this song and produce a version that is halfways decent in a different way.

when phil sings, he does it with all his heart. when you listen to the original you feel the emotions that once he did. this girl is only trying to do her best, the vocals are good, but they don't express any emotions, this is the differance.

for all those who think corrs have done a good cover - i ask you - listen to phil's song then listen to the corrs immediately after. What a difference in emotions that they bring about. phil's version is just stupendous, not just technically,vocals, harmonies, but the whole way he conveys his emotions through poetry and song.

An absolute abomination.... One of the best Irish rock songs given the predictably twee and saccharin Coors 'once over'. All its grit, poignancy and relevance of the original is lost. They should have just covered Lizzy's 'Sarah'. Terrible.
