  • Was played at John F Kennedys funeral

  • Playing this song for a contest

  • In the center of the ring they are torturing a bear and although he cannot sing they can make him whistle Londondderry Air

  • Portishead-born Frederick Weatherley penned the lyrics for Danny Boy with the Londonderry Air quite by accident

  • @JamesDonnelly90

Think what you want................Read on........In the Republic of Ireland, as of 2006, 3,681,446 people or about 86.83% of the population CLAIM to be Roman Catholic.[56] In Northern Ireland about 53.1% of the population are PROTESTANT (21.1% Presbyterian, 15.5% Church of Ireland, 3.6% Methodist, 6.1% Other Christian) as of 2001............................and I'm not your mate. Oh, and Oscar Wilde was a protestant and TURNED catholic...just sayin...."mate".

  • How can you even dislike this?

  • I wish I had Sir Galway's lungs and control.

  • ...........and I have to say, as a decendant of devoted Irishmen, both catholic and protestant, that there are probably thousands upon thousands of Irishmen who would argue this and more! *Gives us something to talk about over a few pints!* LOL

    peace

  • .........Further more, James the I is quoted as saying:

" the "City of Londonderry" and everything contained within":

'shall be united, consolidated, and from hence-forth for ever be one entire County of itself, distinct and separate from all our Counties whatsoever within our Kingdom of Ireland-and from henceforth for ever be named, accounted and called, the County of Londonderry.'

  • From the encyclopedia of Earth:

County Londonderry was created by James I when he gave a charter to the Irish Society to undertake the new county's plantation – the London prefix being added in reference to the London Livery Companies of the Irish Society. This charter is dated 29 March 1613....................................

  • @technocrash09

This is fascinating - thanks for posting it! And yes, a lively, light-hearted debate over a few pints and songs would be fun

  • @technocrash09 its actually county derry

  • @barrier261 ....All depends on which side of James I you align with, my good friend.

    peace

  • @barrier261 there is no mention of county in this tune which is called Londonderry Air.

  • An Doire

  • best song ever! Live Long Ireland!!!

  • Awesome!

  • london derrière

  • Londonderry on The Foyle is another great song.

    Keep er lit

Keep The Crimson Banner Flying High.

    God Bless the brave 13.

  • This is really beautiful

  • ottima esecuzione

  • i would adore to play this on my sax! such a beautiful song which i could find the music!

  • @chrispy199 good point, there is this inner musical girl that would love to play the saxophone. I've always wanted to play lady gaga songs on a saxophone, but yes! this sounds perfect on a saxophone

  • I fell asleep with this on last night. My dreams were... undescribably beautiful.

  • Although I have studied Deaf culture, it is songs like this one that make me believe that they are truly missing out on some aspects of the world.

  • Is that Stonehenge in the Video?

  • @BigjockGnu silly person? listen fella, the only silly people are those who call it the Londonderry Air when its the Derry Air

  • @Jbpc9 if the city was called Crap, so the name of the tune would change?

  • @luke280495 yeah crap air good one

  • @Jbpc9 so, do you understand that the name of the city doesnt matter?

  • @luke280495 look it matters to me and a lot of people

  • @Jbpc9 Look, i didn't think that way, sorry....

  • @Jbpc9 The town the song originated is limvady in county londonderry, they county is named after the city of londonderry.

  • @19carson90 theres no such place as county londonderry. county derry, yes...london-derry, no.

  • it's Derry not Londonderry thank you very much

  • @Jbpc9 The tune is the Londonderry Air regardless of what you call the city you silly person.

  • @Jbpc9 The city is called Derry the song is Londonderry Air, there's a difference between the song and the title, sure the song comes from Derry but that does not mean the song is strictly called Derry Air, it's definately Londonderry Air

  • @Jbpc9 The town's name is Londonderry. If you nationalists can't deal with the town having the word 'London' in it, then move to the Irish Republic. Londonderry is part of the UK - deal with it.

  • You raise me up, anyone?

  • @kaleigh12344 I just realised that they used almost the same tune for YOu raise Me up!! I did not realize that until now and I've played both songs on the flute many many times!

  • OK i'll give it 10 out of 10.

  • eddie irvine once tried getting the toads with formula one to play "londonderry air" instead of "god save the queen" because he is irish after all (even if us northerners must carry a british passport).

  • This song is so beautiful. It's sort of sad, and the instrument even sounds like it's "crying", if you understand what I mean. We're singing this song in chorus and it's just so lovely that it stops everything and creates a wonderful moment.

  • I am absolutely not an emotional type of kid. But this makes me cry.

  • I think I fall in love with irish music~~so graceful !~like it!! greetings from Singapore

  • London Derriere

  • many years ago i was a serving soldier, stationed at ballykelly, and i found the countryside and surrounding area at 10,000ft in a gazelle quite enthralling,I love ireland as a foreignor, and also i did a time in omagh in the 70`s.these places don`t do justice to the music that they portray.

  • Beautiful version - The Londonderry Air was penned in my home town of Limavady, County Londonderry by Jane Ross who heard a local fiddle player, Jimmy Currie playing it outside her house in Main Street. A plaque on her old house mentiones this...Thanks for posting

  • I like this very much but wish the photos were different. After all, the song is from Ireland and the photos are Stonehenge in England and certainly do not match the tune.

  • I play this song when I am feeling down. It cheers me up

  • there is no such place as londonderry

  • @coirpeach1 Wow, the thousands of people living there must be in a permanent state of confusion in that case!

  • @coirpeach1 I wonder what all the people living in Londonderry must think, then. My, they must be permanently confused if their town doesn't exist!

  • @ruairidhkee its real name is Daire Calgaich.Confusion is an often too subtle sign of paranoia

  • @coirpeach1 By Royal Charter of King James I in 1613, the town was named Londonderry, and henceforth shall be called that until such time that the monarch of this United Kingdom choose to change that. In fact, in 1984, when Londonderry City Council was dubbed 'Derry City Council' by the nationalists, the name of the town was lawfully agreed not to be changed - because it had no royal mandate to do so. Ergo, the town's 'real name', as you said, is Londonderry.

  • @ruairidhkee Why do you all have to make it political can't everyone just enjoy the nice music who cares about a name of a town.

  • Nice music and nice images. However, you should use images of Ireland, not of Stonehenge which is in England!! There are plenty of fabulous images from Ireland available.

  • @Babylonien2009 the tune is irish but the lyrics were composed by an englishman

  • Never knew You Raise Me Up was based on Londonderry Air. Even more respect for this classic now.

  • @despookyhhr that's very sweet.

  • @Helgihermadur yes thats just what i have been telling every one and there like what?

  • Why Stonehenge? Danny Boy is Iris' national theme!

  • Have loved this for nearly 70 years and thanks to my friend from Limavady I love it even more knowing the beautiful story behind it - thankyou so vey much.

  • Lovely version.

  • please dont ruin this song by arguing if its protestant of catholic just listen

  • nice tune,

  • yes, o danny boy was written by an englishman, but the tune air from county derry is irish.

    beautiful music.

  • @angelinech33 The tune is the LONDONDERRY AIR!

  • londonderry/county derry (apparently dependent on whether you're catholic or protestant) is in northern ireland.

  • @angelinech33 Not exactly Protestant and Catholics...more about Unionists and Nationalists

  • Danny Boy was written by an Englishman

  • seriously? Danny Boy to pictures of England? wtf is wrong with you????

  • Well Stonehenge is evidence of Celtic culture is it not ? :-)

  • @bobbyrooney

    Exactly what I was thinking.

Next up: bagpipe music and images from France.

  • i have 2 play this on my viola. it is a beautiful song and is fun to play

  • The Londonderry Air hails from my home town, Limavady, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland - beautiful..known worldwide....Jane Ross penned the tune after hearing Jimmy Currie playing it on his fiddle outside her house in Main Street, Limavady..

  • Wow! Thanks for your comment.

  • Nice to learn a little bit of the history of this beautiful haunting air. I learned it first at my Grandmother's knee... she loved it. A lady of impeccable taste. May her soul rest in peace. Thanks for posting a small bit of the story of Danny Boy.

  • @stoutman5 Exactly. LONDONderry. At least some-one on YouTube gets it right. I'm going there in August...can't wait!

  • @stoutman5 i think you'll find it is County Derry...thank you very much..

  • @stoutman5 i have to say, i never heard anyone call county derry by county londonderry in my entire life. I know the city/town can be referred to by both but never the county. Than again, i'm from meath so it's not really my neck of the woods

  • You raise me up !

  • I remember playing this while in the school band. I got stuck on the cymbals -.-. Damn teacher.

  • So relaxing, Thanks for sharing, great job on the vid :)

  • Thank you so much, my friend. I appreciate your kind feedback. Have a great day!

  • Sunsong, this is so lovely :)

I love Londonderry Air. I don't know one person that isn't moved into a sweet state of melancholy by this melody. Another song that does that on a universal level is Greensleeves.(What Child is This)

They both have a magical quality to them that seems to be linked to a distant past.

So, a wonderful choice for the video images.

Stonehenge, a most magical place to go with this magical melody. Thanks for this one. :)

    Annie

  • Thanks once again, Annie. What you say is so interesting and I have to agree that there are certain melodies that have more universal appeal - like they are gifts from something greater than one person. I hope that makes sense :-)

And Stonehenge. What to say? :-)

Talk about magic. What an incredible spot on this planet it is.
