This is an wonderful film, full of potential, achieving a certain level of greatness, the blame, if any lies in the script which is episodic and undeveloped. However what there is on screen, is maximized to the ultimate degree by a terrific cast, Todd, Raines and Howard, beautiful photography and a clear sense of fatalistic drama. What is so unique and rare about this story is that is examines the doubt individuals have in choosing their ultimate mates and those lovers they leave behind.
I just saw the film - I liked it, but I don't think it quite lives up to this beautiful trailer, I didn't find the film quite as romantic as I hoped, and they kept cutting abruptly everytime the lovely Trevor Howard went to kiss her!
I have always wanted to see this film... David Lean was such a poet with his camera. Few directors have understood the sheer art of using the camera to tell a story the way this artist did.

it's a very nice Christmas movie, but nothing like "Brief encounter"
